Interesting how these three teams figured into Pitt fans equation this year. First of all hopes seemed to rise as word leaked that Pitt won a scrimmage over the Hoyas. Georgetown figured to be a NCAA team and fans saw that as an indication that Pitt would be better than expected. As we sit today the Hoyas are dead in the water and barely in contention for an NIT berth. Who would have then thought that it would be Gonzaga who suffered more than Pitt in having the game cancelled. Yes they might have lost to the Panthers, but if they won their RPI would have been boosted. After losing to St. Mary's for the second time last night they are pushed hard against the bubble with a struggling RPI number. While Pitt could have used another OCC opponent who was respected they sit at 35 in the RPI. Winning the Gonzaga game would have added minimal benefit while a loss could have pushed Pitt down slightly. So Gonzaga like Georgetown has under performed. As for Syracuse they had a bad week and are fading towards the bubble. Their home game versus NC State is huge for them. A loss versus NC State and a trip to NC, leaves them no margin for error. ACC tournament seeding wise it benefits Pitt to finish ahead of Syracuse, but would that be best. It would dilute Pitt's two victories versus the Orange and an Orange loss at home to NC State drops Pitt's RPI slightly. Syracuse is currently at 55 in the RPI. They can't afford to drop much more. If Syracuse falters, who would have predicted that Georgetown, Gonzaga, and Syracuse would not make the tournament. Even with a soft bubble.

I still think Syracuse will get in. I think the two wins over them really help Pitt's resume and a win over either Louisville or Duke makes what Syracuse does the rest of the way for all practical purposes irrelevant.
