Gibbs update

Is it necessary to always downplay anything Pitt does relative to other programs? I really mean that. "Pitt never beats out other programs of similar or better caliber. But when they do, here are reasons x, y, and z for why we didn't REALLY beat out those other schools."

It's such a stupid position to take.

Ski, most of those who defend this program do this every time Pitt is recruiting, or has lost a prospective recruit. So why blast SMF for doing it? We always here why we didn't get a kid. The excuses (I mean reasons) are limitless. So it is almost like we are all conditioned by these on this forum.

Honestly, as BMan said, UConn is stacked at guard. They should be out. No matter how much a kid likes them. If Pitt can't sell its situation over UConn, then these coaches are horrible. tOSU is different, but I think BMan nailed it, Sterling isn't really a point guard per se. He comes to Pitt he is a 32-35 minute a game combo guard, on a team with some decent front court options which should allow him to get some open shots, in the ACC.

The one intangible I see in Pitt's favor is his and his families familiarity with the program. Ashton played here, Ashton remains in the area. He must have seen his brother play while he was at Pitt. This something that might factor in if he has found that some of the other places he played did not turn out so well....at least Seton Hall. He may want that for his last year....maybe a comfort factor. It might just be wishful thinking on my part.

Ashton has started the Ashton Gibbs Basketball Academy locally so you'd think that Sterling playing at Pitt would help Ashton grow his business when the announcers say "Of course, you remember Sterling's brother, Ashton who had a great career at Pitt and has a local basketball academy now." However, Matta is telling Sterling he gets guys to the NBA.

If you read the article Gibbs' father was talking about how much they liked OSU and we were not even mentioned at all, you would think it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY Sterling Gibbs will be coming here.

So, speculation on how Gibbs would do here is getting to be absurd.

Rather, the hard reality is that, with Robinson and Smith starting, we got people (Jones, Slim) that can spell Smith but we got a problem with nobody decent to spell Robinson.

There are a lot of possibilities (Wilson, Newkirk, Smith?, Slim?) but nobody that can clearly get the job done. Dixon has an open scholly so after Gibbs makes his decision final, we get to see if Dixon can find SOMEBODY that can come in and play the point good enough to spell Robinson.

Otherwise we are potentially looking at a situation like last year where, with Newkirk's erratic play, there wasn't anyone decent enough to spell Robinson and he got played too many minutes and his game went downhill... and that would not be good.

I don't see UConn as being stacked at guard. BMan's post has faulty info. Boatright is gone, and Gibbs could step right into his spot. They are definitely competition for us.

Ha, first post on this new format.

I doubt that "playing time" is going to be the deciding factor for Gibbs. It seems that between Pitt, OSU and UConn there are plenty of minutes for him to be had, perhaps a bit more at Pitt and OSU than UConn. I think Pitt has plenty going for it here, including Ashton, familiarity with Pitt/Pittsburgh and playing some of the teams he was geographically more familiar with growing up. Can't see how he wouldn't get 30 minutes a game here and, really, shouldn't that be enough? Doesn't mean he's Pitt bound but it certainly wouldn't shock.

When is a decision expected?

Absolutely. Gibbs would see 27-30 mpg immediately. Purvis has skills, but his handle is not starting PG quality. Jalen Adams is certainly viewed as the next UConn PG stud, but he's a frosh and not a likely one-and-done. More than likely he won't be expected to be the main guy in year one, and would understudy Gibbs like Napier playing behind Kemba or Boat playing behind Napier.

Anyway, if Gibbs chooses OSU over UConn, The Boneyard will be in full meltdown. It almost already is already with every pundit announcement that Gibbs is coming, followed by Gibbs tweeting "hold on" (which has already happened twice in two weeks).

Believe it or not, I think Pitt will be better off without Gibbs. I don't think he would have done well in Pitt's system.
This would be his 3rd team in his collegiate career. He hasn't seemed to have become "the solution" anywhere he has gone so far.

He's a good player. There's no doubt about that. I like good players, and I'd rather that they would come here than not.

But I spoke to someone yesterday who shed some light on his leaving Texas, and even Seton Hall. I don't want to sound like sour grapes because I know I wanted him. But the person I spoke to felt strongly that there are issues with him.

Hey DT! Do you ever sleep? Saw the time of your post.

Dean... I agree with you on this... Gibbs is a good player but I don't think he would have fit in very well and then he would be gone after just one year. Smith would have had to come off the bench and Jones and Slim would have played SG very little.

Teams win basketball games and I think as a team we would not have been better... so to me it is six of one and a half dozen of the other... and given the bigger hole with both Smith and Gibbs leaving (as well as Robinson), we are probably better off in the long run without him.

Now we get to see if Dixon does anything with that one open scholly.
