Gynmastics: high score but lose opener

I don't know if Pitt has ever finished ranked in the top 25 as a team. Interestingly, Pitt has been drawing top 15 in attendance (over 1K per match).

Will be interesting to see what this young coach can do. Good start to the year score wise.

Pitt had two teams that qualified for nationals, which I believe put them in the top 15. They were both coached by Donna Demarino Sanft, the first one in 1979 or 1980 and the second one in 1981.

NCAA women’s gymnastics championships were first held in 1982. Nationals started with the top 10 teams and later expanded to 12. Pitt has never made the NCAA finals as a team. They have had one individual national champion on uneven in 1982, Lisa Shirk, that’s it as far as individual champions. They have, obviously, made regionals as a team (11 times) with their best regional finish being 4th in 1999 which would have been equivalent to about 19th or 20th place overall.

They made AIAW nationals as a team in 1981 and finished 12th. For those that don’t know, the AIAW was a predecessor of women’s collegiate championships before the NCAA decided to start sponsoring them.

The polls, at least the original linked poll which I think is from GymInfo, don’t go back that far as far as I know. They’ve never finished nationally ranked that I know of, and Pitt didn’t crack the top 25 until 2013 at #22, and they didn’t stay there very long from what I remember.

Last week Pitt fell on beams too many times. Today Pitt hit every routine, had so many 9.8's on beam and bar, and put up a 196.225 that would rank them in the top 10 in the nation if they maintained that. As it is, their 195.175 average has a chance to crack the top 25, depending on what the other teams in the poll put up.

The women’s gymnastic team placed 9th in the 1979 AIAW National Championships held at Penn State. That makes two times that they placed in the top 15 in the nation.

Do you have a source for that, because Pitt doesn't even have that in their records book so it should be forwarded to them to be updated. I can't find the standings outside the top 2 for that year anywhere.

Check with Donna Sanft. I know they competed in that championship. I went and watched the competition, so that alone should put them in the top 15 since the championship has always been very small team wise.

This isn't the first time they have errors or omissions in their media guides. If you have knowledge of it send them an email.

Paco, here.

1979 AIAW Division I Nationals - Team

1 Cal State Fullerton 143.80
2 Penn State 143.70
3 Clarion 141.75
4 Utah 138.10
5 SW Missouri 137.70
6 USC 135.25
7 Oregon State 134.55
8 Louisville 133.90
9 Pittsburgh 133.85
10 Utah State 133.70

Awesome, thanks, I'm updating Wikipedia now. The Gymn forum site only lists the top 10 team finishes (Pitt not listed in '81 for their #12 finish), which makes me wonder if there are any other missing years where Pitt was at nationals but finished outside the top 10.

Sanft's bio does say her teams made it 3 times?

As a head coach of Panther gymnastics for 12 years, she posted an 82-50-1 record and was twice selected as Eastern Collegiate Coach of the Year. Sanft's teams earned three AIAW/NCAA national championship appearances, 11 AIAW/NCAA regional appearances, and one top ten finish in 1979. She also coached Pitt's only NCAA Champion in women's gymnastics, Lisa Shirk.
