I preface this by saying that I did not see the ND game. I don't get the ACC network on Comcast. I did get updates from a friend watching. As the game went on, it was obvious to me the that Pitt was sh***ing the bed as he became more discouraged and pessimistic. As a result of the loss, this board has gone from ecstatic and 'Pitt is back' to Capel doesn't have it and players unhappy, mentality. As I said, no comment from me as I didn't see the game. Let me say this, basketball is just hard to figure out. I just commented recently to a friend that 'how can Mich St beat Rutgers by 23, then 2 games later lose by 30 and score 37 pts?' Just no reasonable explanation, but it happens. Do you think Mich St will tank? No, they are a blue blood. Let's hope Pitt, although not a blue blood, has enough maturity to rise out of this funk. Let's not get into conspiracy theories, which is a common reaction nowadays. It is Capel's job to motivate and resolve any problems. Results will tell the story. One of my favorite cliches is 'All's well that ends well'. Let's see what happens, before quitting on the team. H2P.

It's exasperating.
They really were playing a pretty high level a few weeks ago, defense was pdg, they were confident in a flow offensively.
But, the wheels seemed to have come off.
I like HCJC a LOT, but he can't have this team flame out like like last year's team.

Jeff, he has sufficient players this year that if the team burns out, it is mostly on Capel. They have a lot more depth and pieces now. He can sit X and get very good PG play at times. He has wings off the bench. They lack bigs but so does mostly everyone else. If they collapse here, this one is on Capel.

I think it is still early though, all things considered.

Yet when X fouled out yesterday, he did not even go to Femi. Is there any word yet why that happened? That was such a puzzling move.

Right, Femi got his least playing time in a long time. Jeffress got his most.

Maybe the score and nature of the game contributed to some strange substitutions.

I am not questioning your support of the HC of the team you follow, I am just curious as to what you see in HCJC that makes you say I like him "a LOT". (I do enjoy listening to him speak purely about the development of his players and what it takes individually for his guys to be successful. )

Yeah, Capel talks a nice game. He says the right things most of the time. But he's clearly not a good coach. His teams lack game preparation and he is unable to make the right adjustments during games. He's better than Stallings, but that says nothing. In the ranking of ACC coaches, he's near the bottom in terms of coaching ability, results, game day strategy, and recruiting.

I thought that but Jeffress played early and the other starters were still in the game once Pitt was down big and they were clearly not interested in playing.

Well, better players always make #1 and #2 better, but two years of "team Chemistry" problems which are clearly affecting the program, I am concerned with the culture that the HC creates, something is wrong with it. Calling a program immature when some of the problems are there 2-3 years is a mis-interpretation, IMO

Was Jeffress playing guard?
No if I remember correctly when he played in the first half Pitt was going with a really small lineup. I just don’t know why last night was the game they decided to get him back in there when the game was still very much winnable.

He did a real nice job at VCU. Things spun out on him at Oklahoma, but he got to go back to graduate school at coach Ks first chair. Really, Pitt could not have done better.
At a distance he seems to do all the things you need to do for a top 25 program.

VCU is a big fish in a small pond, he cheated like hell to win at Oklahoma or he would be Pitt there as well. He was known as a good recruiter bad x and o, so far below avg recruiter and bad x and o at Pitt
