Has ESPN "Jumped the Shark"?

You work in cable, correct?

IMO, I wouldn't be surprised to see a major shift away from live sports. Younger kids don't seem as drawn in.

Just an observation, but I've had many conversations with family and friends who have said their appetite for professional sports has dropped.

Something seems to be changing, but that's just from my own bubble.

I agree about younger kids. My 5th grade son loves to play sports, but only live sport he will watch in its entirety is Pitt FB/BB with me. Some Steeler games, even though he is a fan of them. He will watch some of an NBA game at the end of the day when just chilling out before bed, but that's about it. I would never miss a down of a Steeler game, but since the Big Ben being a Big Jacka** occurred and other instances of Pro Sports wearing on me, I have not watched a Steeler game from start finish more than probably more than 5 times since the Arizona Super Bowl, let alone other NFL games.

From my bubble, I believe the pro sports trajectory is dropping, except for the NBA. The younger kids really seem attracted to that more than any other sport, at least my sons group of friends.

As with all bubbles though, the increased money for sports has to burst at some point. College FB/BB coaches making 5 to 8 million per year etc has to level off at some point. It cannot just keep increasing and eventually ESPN cannot pay billions of $$s per contract without it biting them in the rear end. Eventually that gravy train for the leagues/NCAA will dry up and it may come within the next 10 years where golf courses, barber shops and waterfalls at practice facilities stop and Nick Saban and Harbaugh take pay cuts. It will never go back to where players are working a second job in the offseason, but college OCs making 1.5 million a year I don't believe will be the norm either. I think sports and $$ may have reached its peak and its going to level off and drop back slightly within the next decade.

It's called commercials.

The problem with that is, most of these game have low ratings, and don't make enough money to stand on their own. The only way you will have games for free is if it's like the old days, where you only had 3 networks, and a handful of games.
