The Penn State hazing story sickens me. Those Penn State players deserve punushment. I was captain of my wrestling team in high school. You know what our hazing was? The freshmen wrestlers had to pick up the towers in the Locker Room after we shiwered. Then we ALL went to the local Burger King and the JUnios and Seniors treated the SOphomres and Freshmen. We were very close as a team. We had more sense 35 years ago than these Penn State football players have now. I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED.

Never understood it. Doing it to someone or allowing it to be done to yourself.

I had 2 roommates in college that pledged a frat. If anyone had done to me what they’d done to them I might still be in jail all these years later.

Do laundry, carry bags for the older guys on a team - cool. Physical abuse of any kind? FOH.

Sexual abuse I agree 100%. Physical abuse, depends as there are grey areas and degrees.

In HS on the football team, as a freshman, I was attacked by the upperclassmen with the blocking bags. One day, out of no where they just attacked us swinging them at us freshman. It was like a pillow fight where we didn't have bag to swing back and they had the reach advantage because of that.

A few days later they made us run the gauntlet where they were on both sides and we ran in the middle as they hit us, before the coaches got there. As an upperclassman I was now on the flip side of that. I don't consider that physical abuse, especially on a football team. Hell the gauntlet was a drill we did back then, this was just a longer version since the whole team did it, not just the RBs and WRs.

But truly pummeling someone or putting a genitalia on someone, that is not hazing, that is assault and being an a-hole.

They need to be shut down. The whole university should be forced to close up shop. I am going to be writing to our governor to see if this could be done.

You think Pitt would ever do this? HELL NO. I know for a fact that they treat the incoming freshman with class and respect, you can just tell by all of the interviews they do and how they are around each other. This would never happen anywhere else besides that disgusting town.

Hitting each other with pads as long as there are no kill type head shots - whatever. I don’t know that I’d encourage it but sometimes boys being boys is ok. Even things like taping someone to a goalpost for a few minutes I don’t think is a big deal. Others may still think that’s abuse on some level but I don’t. I was referring to the type of abuse you’re talking about.

My roommates in that frat situation had the shiznit beaten out of them. Brutal bruises all over their lower body.

that is very sweet...

Our "hazing " consisted of the freshmen taking the equipment back to the shed after practice and on bus rides they had to double up so the upperclassmen had their own seats.

Getting food after wrestling weigh-ins, moving the wrestling mats, ckeaning the mats, keeping water around, picking up towels, dumping them head first into the towel bin after they filled it up, worst seats on the bus for away matches, clean up the bus, putting football equipment away, carrying helmets, towel snapping, Ben Gay or heat in their JStr-ps, and cut their hair.
This was my experience in the late 60's.

Guess what our kids played football and wrestled and did the same stuff in the early 2000s, some 35 yrs later.

For tradition to last that long it must be good tradition!!!

Fyi
Frat stuff was 10x's worse back in the early 70's.
Sorority too.
Back in the day frats had sister sororities and we did alot of pledge stuff together.
Lol.Hard to believe we survived but we did and have frat sister sorority alum events 2xs a year for the last 40 something years.

Pfffttt....you should have seen what the Air Force did to us.
hartman would have had your candyass for breakfast...somehow these kids back then made it through without lawsuits and whining about...

Ha ha. It sure wasn't like that. I know a couple of guys that were there around that time and they can vouch for the authenticity of the movie right down to how they made the English countryside look like Paris Island.

Some of the stuff they did to us was classified back then so I'm not going there but they made us climb over stuff and all of the regular military basic training stuff. Plus we had to memorize a book called 'Contrails' cover to cover. How many of you could sing all four versus of the National Anthem?

Pitt Fiji pledge 1971......no physical hazing....but the psychology of Hell Week was over the top......

I pledged the same year.
Physical and psychological hazing.
Push ups
Sit ups
Running
Obstacle courses
Boxing with the brothers
Activities with sister sorority
The girls were more vicious and warped than the boys.lol
If a pledge dropped or couldn't finish we had to finish for him or carry the pledge to the finish in the runs to keep him in the class.
All 21 finished and got in the frat.

Hellweek was bad.
Same stuff but triple it.

The kidnapping was the topper.
Brothers would snatch us from the dorms.
T shirt, jeans, shoes, and .25 cents each, they would drop us hours away in the winter and we had to figure out a way home.
Our group beat the brothers home who stopped for a few beers which turned out to be a bad idea.

We found a rest stop with a guy getting gas who was traveling to a place 20 miles from the frat house.

yeah, my brother went through Marine Corps basic prior to OCS in 73 (only five years or so after this film was set in). He said R Lee Ermey was absolutely spot on as to how it was (and how he went about things as a di) with no embellishment.

I guess I'll weigh in.

So I have no idea what's true here. The Altoona Mirror claims that the school found that this Barber kid committed "prohibited behavior" and that the local DA declined to press charges. Those are two different things because a local DA sure isn't going to become a household name if the case isn't air tight so there are probably some holes.

Look, PSU has shown a willingness to be an ATM to anyone with an abuse claim that they don't want to have dragged through the papers. I don't really know what to make of this other than there was something that happened (per PSU). The shouting of some ex-players is fun because there's a lot of loyalty to the program (and probably nobody wants to say they were having a good time playing with their junk in a room full of naked wet men).

The only thing I do know for certain is that PSU really doesn't know how to get in front of these things.

Ermey had first-hand knowledge of what Marine basic was like back then although he did his boot in San Diego. Can't imagine it was much different.

Not just in sports they have had a lot of potential big issues and they do seem to attempt to bush this stuff under the rug.

As you said it best to lead when this stuff happens, get out in front of the story, fix it, let everyone know you fixed it, and take tough action to demonstrate that you fixed the problem.

The guy went straight from the military into acting, and proved himself for his roles by simply ad libbing lines right off the top of his head based on his time in the military. Most of his insults in Full Metal Jacket were improvised.

I fully expect a story in the PG on the Creamery or some "academic" achievement to provide "balance" to this terrible smear on the image of Penn State.

or the Creamery's branching out to introduce their new line of ice based treats starting with the unveiling of Genital Gelato...

One of my favorites was us being laid on the couch. Butt side up with a branding iron in the fire place. We were then blindfolded. We were asked the question, who is the tallest Polish person ever to live.
If u didnt know, they would put dry ice on your butt cheek, to simulate the branding.
Answer was Stush-u libertski......

There were many.
When I pledged in 1971 this was one.
Back in the day this was a nothing.
Today it would be a something.
1.the pledge blindfolded stood on the 2nd flr looking over the 20 drop to flr 1.
2.the pledge was handed a 10 lb barbell with 10ft of line attached to it and was told the drop to flr 1 was 20ft.
3.a sister sorority member or volunteer sorority pledge unzipped the pledges fly and attached the 10 ft line to guess what.
4. the pledge blindfolded was told to trace the 10ft line attached to the 10lb barbell back to you know what and was reminded the drop to flr 1 was 20ft.
5.the pledge was told to drop the barbell to flr 1 knowing there was a 10ft difference.
6. at the last minute the line was cut as the blindfolded pledge dropped the barbell.

So this kid will sue for millions and us PA taxpayers will foot the bill. Time for the psu kids to get the THON cans out and start peddling for loose change all over the suburbs.

The suit should be directed to the player and players family.

Franklin said he reported it when he first heard about it.

Except he kept the player on the roster.
Bad decision Franklin!

Yup any attorney will go after Deep Pockets.
So yes Nitter dopes get out there with your stupid cans.

IMO Nitter football uses a lot of the THON untraceable cash to pay recruits and players.

This is the dream scenario for a cheating football program.
Untraceable cash raised by kids all over PA with cans.
Using basic money laundering techniques this money could easily find its way to recruits or players.

Of course some a lot of this money is used for its intended purpose, but not all of it!
