I don't understand why this team cannot play help D. Jamie has been very good at teaching this to his teams over the years. Therefore, I think mostly the players are at fault here. It seems like our players are so worried about their man beating them, that they don't have time to react to anything else. When playing D, you cannot have a singular focus. You have to see the entire court, and when someone is getting beat off the dribble, which is going to happen, someone else must leave their man and cutoff the driver.
We have shown no ability whatsoever to do this. Jamel and Mike have been particularly poor at this. If they could shut off the drive, the guy has to pass off and another layup can be avoided. Maybe we even get a charge if someone gets there in time. Maybe we force a turnover. One thing is for sure, if we don't we get layup-ed to death. The whole idea is to stop giving up the layups and force a lower percentage shot!
I have to wonder if these kids are just lazy and care too much about getting their points. Perhaps their basketball IQ is too low. I think anyone can play D though, if they give a top notch effort. Jamie's teams were solid on defense in the past. If this team is going to have any success going forward, these kids are going to have to learn this concept!
One final point, they used to say we could not get a top shooting guard because he would not want to come here and have to play defense in Jamie's system. Well if that is the case, we should get a great two guard recruit for next season, since we haven't played any defense here all year!
