Hidden Max Browne stat, I thought this was very interesting

I agree but that is not what I was questioning. I question HOW things transpired. I find it hard to believe they played one guy over another for political reasons ( they were afraid Browne would transfer out).

Have you seen Darnold play?? Unless Browne is the next Tom Brady, pretty sure Darnold is better.

That is the story that is out there. They went with the guy with more experience, but the USC coaches thought Darnold was the better player. They liked Browne as a player too, and didnt want him to transfer out...

I think initially USC thought they could win with Browne so they went with him as the starter because he is older and more experienced....but when you start losing games all bets are off at that point.

Playing the guy with more experience is not the same as playing a guy so he will not transfer out (political according to the poster I am referring to in this thread). I get playing someone with more experience!

Colin Cowherd talks about it here at about the 2 minute mark... he supposedly talks with USC coaches? Who knows?

He only says that USC is to blame for not playing Darnold sooner. I am not questioning that! I am questioning the reason they did not play him. I think it makes more sense that they played Browne because he had more experience. older and been in their system longer. I don't buy that they played Darnold because they were afraid of Browne transferring out. We will never know for sure!

He says they didnt want Browne to transfer out because Darnold didnt have a good backup.

This is incorrect. They had a QB battle in camp, and Browne won. He won the starting job and held it for a few games. The HC decided to make a change after a couple of losses, and he did.

Perhaps Darnold is the better QB. Perhaps, if he'd stuck with Browne, USC would've won anyway. I have no idea.
I'm not saying Browne is better or even equal to Darnold, only that he was not "blown away in practice" by Darnold.
And if Browne is not the opening day starter for Pitt, it could just be that McVittee, who the staff loves, is the starter because he wins the job fair and square, and because the staff thinks he's going to be successful right away.

I used the wrong phrase. I should not have said he was "blown away" in practice. But I know that Darnold was the better QB in practice to the point that the players were campaigning to have him start. I don't have any links or proof, but that was the talk leading up to Darnold's first start. It isn't a knock on Browne. He could be the second best QB in college football, but more than likely he isn't and we should not expect him to set the world ablaze.

So you honestly think that there was a competition in practice and even though one guy beat out the other guy, they played the guy that lost so he would not transfer out? Really
Yes. The USC Rivals site even reported a member of the coaching staff told them Darnold would be the starter after camp was over.
Then the coaches announced Browne the next day.
What changed at the 11th hour? Maybe they didn't want the other guy to transfer to another school.

They were very close in camp and some observers of the practices even put Darnold ahead. Browne kept it close to get the job, but you saw how short his leash was.

Sounds like the coaches said Darnold outplayed Browne in camp but they started Browne instead. I just wonder if they are saying this now to prop up Darnold??? I see nothing dating back to camp verifying this claim. Not trying to be difficult as I think both are good QBs with Darnold being better at this point.

No. People have said that all along. Like I've said check the entire USC site.

Here's the podcast from August where they say some coaches thought Darnold outplayed Browne in camp (at the 3:30 mark).

I don't expect Browne to come here and be a star. It would be nice but I don't expect it. I do expect he can be at least as good as NP was his first year here, which I would describe as adequate. Chances are he will be somewhere between Peterman 1st year and his 2nd. I do think at the very least he gives Pitt a solid option. If McVittie wins the job that likely means he is a really good QB. Where with out Browne it was going to be McVittie whether he was ready or not.

He did request and received permission to talk to other school as soon as he lost his starting job. If the coaches were concerned about him leaving they obviously were right with those concerns.

Browne lost his job because Darnold blew him away in practice and not because the first two games were tough.

I tried to tell some of you dipsticks not to get overly excited about Browne. Clearly, some of you just don't live in reality.

I've heard it reported that Darnold was clearly better than Browne in camp. Helton coached QBs and had a great relationship with Browne and basically named him the starter out of loyalty. That comes from a former college coach turned radio host that says people 'in the know' gave him that info.
