Iowa completely took Boyd out of the game last year and could do the same this year. We have no talent on the other side to exploit and our run game has not been good this season except for a couple long runs against YSU.

I dont know where the points are going to come from so I think we need to involve the 2 TE's a lot. Considering our problems at WR, we probably should make the TEs, the secondary receiving option.

Iowa was able to neutralize Lazard from ISU Saturday but Iowa states running game is pathetic, particularly compared to Pitts.

Iowa's D is much better this year than last IMO.

This will be interesting.

Last year I was amazed that Voytek targeted Boyd EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

He didn't even look for anyone else and it made it so much easier for a fairly porous Iowa D to stop Pitt last year.

I would think Peterman will do a better job of spreading the love. I am not sure if iowa will double team Boyd or not. They generally play pretty straight up regardless of who it is

Well, you just upset the Pro-Voytik crowd. I like both QBS, and think that Voytik has done some great things for PITT. However, I completely agree that he stares down Boyd on every passing play. Peterman seems much more willing to look for other available options when Boyd is doubled.

How about Biz as the key to the Iowa game? I could sure go for only using one of our RS FR OT's this game.

Yeah, Biz is a key. Unless Iowa lays an egg, you'd think they'd attack Pitt's OT's. TE's may have to stay in and block.

Well, our other WRs cant get open and that's a big problem. That said, I felt one of the biggest plays of the game Saturday was on a 3rd down, the Pitt QB (cant remember which) went through all his progressions for a play designed to go to Boyd on the sideline. When he wasnt open, he found Challingsworth in the middle of the field. I cant remember the last time I saw a Pitt completion to a secondary read. Which QB was this?

I think Holtz and Orndorff have been underused in the offense. I would like to see them get some more touches over the middle, and in time I think that attention that would be focused on the TE's would help free up Boyd and other WRs. It is certainly part of making everything click - but not the fix all to help the offense. I just want to see 1) steady QB play (I don't care who), 2) good ground attack (175+ for the game), 3) Take care of the football, and 4) 3rd down efficiency.

yeah, Orndorff has gotten so tired of not seeing the ball he knocked Zeiss and a defensive back on their butts to score a TD

I posted this in another thread but at least 3 times, I saw Holtz run deep posts/crossing pattern. 1 was the TD, the second was the catch he had in second half. Another time, he was open but ball was thrown to and completed by Boyd, in first half. He was lined up as a WR (in the slot) on 2 of those. Good to see.

The Moose Lodger never used tight ends and should have in last years game against Iowa---especially on many key 3rd downs with 2-3 yds to go---would've kept the chains moving--one of the most disappointing things about his tenure here--hope that PN sees it differently--a good tight end is a qb's saviour

No Question about that, but it is up to Chaney to make a Game Plan to make it happen? And the Tight Ends to Execute it by catching all the Balls and Blocking too, if it is a good Plan? All I know is that Orndoff and Holtz have the speed and blocking ability to be wonderful Blockers on a Voytik Sweep or Bootleg but can Chaney make it happen?

Orndoff as Former QB can throw the Ball as well, and Voytik laterally a Pass Back to Orndoff can catch the Iowa Defense Napping.

This Pitt Team has plenty of Talent on Offense! Hope Chaney can figure out in addition to breaking in a new QB that takes time and effort away from what Pitt was doing last year the last 5 games?

Coach Pat seems like a Coach that likes to take those kinds of risks!

Voytik stared down Boyd, who was doubled on the play. Thankfully Boyd was able to make the difficult catch. Holtz would have walked in for a TD, instead of a FG had Voytik decided to look to his left about 10 feet.

You might have hit upon something about Voytik????? Voytik is a perfectionists and sometimes they get upset when other Players do not perform and that causes other Team Mates to not like them and that does nothing wanting to to see them succeed.

Palmer as a Baltimore Pitcher used to stare down his Team Mates if they made an error, and when it came to push to shove to win a World Series there was often discontent on that Team?

Maybe the Pitt Coaches are seeing, the Pitt Players prefer Peterman just as they liked Savage two years ago? Or Peterman is just better?

I have no idea but that kind of conjecture can be considered too!

Sorry but I'll never get over it lol. Iowa took Boyd out of the game because the refs just weren't watching the game or something.
But anyways, Holtz is a stud and it's great that this new staff finally gets him involved. It still baffles me that as good as Chryst was at developing qb's, he never got the TE involved.

i get upset when people say voytik boyd blah blah blah because it's not hyperbole you can tell they are serious. and it's just ridiculous to say so when with no real number 2 receiver boyd caught half the passes last year which means half the passes must have been caught by other players. and people can't have it both ways, it can't be no receivers but boyd can get open and voytik is bad for not looking at anyone but boyd.

watching last years Iowa/Pitt game, at the end, Voytik didn't even try to throw to anyone else. I distinctly remember that during the game and when I rewatched it later in the week.

I also remember watching another game later in the year and it pretty much happened again. I thought how much better Pitt would be if they tried to even look at another receiver.

That was Peterman.

Yes it was Peterman. And if you watch the play, Challingsworth just ran down field and turned around in an open spot. He was wide open for a while and then a defender came to him as the ball was thrown. Could have been a bigger play had he gotten the ball sooner.

I'm still thinking that Challingsworth and Zeise are good enough to make plays - along with Ford.
And I'm still waiting for Orndoff to explode. He could be the college version of Gronk, IMHO.

Go Pitt.
