How much will only having 19 wins matter?

If we lose to Syr? We have a D2 win which doesnt count. The committee wont even know we played that game. Now, I dont think the committee will think, "man, if Pitt just played 1 more D1 cupcake to get to 20, they would be in," but 19 wins is not lot for a bubble team and 1 short of that famous 20 win mark. I just wonder if that will affect the committee members subconsciously.

Does anyone really think that this team is Tournament worthy? NIT and then it's one and out just like the lackluster GW game last year. These guys just aren't good PERIOD

If Pitt is picked for the NCAA tournament they are tournament worthy. Period. There are plenty of teams out there in the same boat as Pitt is in. So if they get in the dance and lose the first game they will be like 33 other teams.

The other schools probably have less principled fans of less discerning tastes.

College basketball is getting just as diluted as college football with the bowl nonsense. It's not there yet, but it's getting there. 64 (or 66) teams in the NCAAT field??? It would be worth something if it was 32. But as it stands now, many teams that will be invited don't deserve to be there.

Sort of. At least they all play in one tourney though (impossible in FB obviously), so the wheat is separated from the chaff pretty quick, or at least eventually. People who post that the winner of the NIT is the 66th best team are wrong, to your point. Austin Peay got hot and won their conference tourney, will be in March madness, but would likely be the worst team in the NIT. I don't actually mind it too much, as its in the control of teams to actually beat APU and get in themselves, but they really don't add much value to be sure.

As far as a team like Pitt "deserving" to go. The ncaa set forth the parameters, and have a committee to determine the merits of each school, good or bad. If we get picked, or less likely win the ACCT, we absolutely deserve to be there. I don't understand how anyone could say otherwise. If we don't get in, we deserved that outcome that too. We will find out what we deserve next week I suppose.

We deserve to sweat it out of we lose Wed; and if we don't get picked- that's certainly deserved.
We deserve to be "in" if we win Wed.

It's basically that simple.

I agree, Kiwi. The NIT winner would probably beat many of the NCAAT teams that make the tournament and advance. In fact, I'm sure the NIT winner would.

I also think that given the framework and situation of the NCAAT, it's the best selection process that exists. It's my favorite time of the year to watch sports because of the unpredictability and excitement. Nothing can compare.

So now we just have to wait and see where we end up.

No it isn't. They rely almost solely on RPI because they have 80 hour/week jobs and dont watch other teams play. Basketball people should pick the field, not the AD of Texas Tech who has watched Pitt play 0 times.

I could do without the additional four teams in Dayton, but I think the 64 team format is really good for college basketball. The presence of the lower conference teams adds a nice David vs. Goliath flavor to the early rounds. As a Pitt fan, haven't had much to celebrate in the tournament but early upsets like Mercer over Duke a few years back are more interesting to me than Kentucky vs. Duke. A 32 team format would take out a lot of the fun for me.

I like the extra 4 games in Dayton. Good lead-in for the real start. Tueday comes way too quick though. Should be:

Wed/Thu: Dayton
Fri/Sat: R64
Sun/Mon: R32

Fri/Sat: S16
Sun/Mon: Elite 8

If we miss out on the tourney, the Gonzaga/Japan fiasco would be what killed us. We would have never even played a D2 school if we didn't have a trip to Japan scheduled, so we lost out on a RPI booster in the Gonzaga game and a win that counts by playing a D2 team. A win today though and we really won't even have to worry much, just need to get it done.
