How the hell is the Louisville VB match on Friday…

Ratings are primarily a function of the broadcast channel and time slot and exclusivity of that slot. Anything on network is going to get more than on cable, and ESPN is going to get more than ESPN2 and on down the chain. The fact that Disney is moving games to ABC and ESPN says a lot though.
Right. I know that. It's pretty evident that ratings get higher as you move things to broadcast.

There are only like 1000 or 2000 people who know that there's a Pitt/Lou volleyball game and make special plans to watch it. Sure, if the game was on ABC at 2PM, it would draw several hundred thousand probably but of those several hundred thousand, only 1000-2000 are people who made specific plans to watch that game.
Was gonna stay out of this one but this comment was a new level of ignorance even for you. There will be 10-12k people at the Pete for that game. Yet you think there will only be 1000-2000 people planning to watch the game on TV? When Pitt plays at Louisville in the Yum Center in November, there will be 15k people at that match. You don't think they are planning to watch their team play the best team in the country on Friday? Volleyball is huge in Louisville right now. And that's just in the two cities that are playing. My buddy's middle-school aged niece plays club volleyball, and her whole team is planning to get together to watch the match this Friday. They live in Kansas City. You don't think girls volleyball teams around the country want to watch two of the best, most fundamentally sound teams play? And these are just the obvious groups of fans. So while no, the viewing crowd won't compare to a college football game, you invalidate any argument you make when you say only 1000-2000 people know there is a game and plan to watch it.

Yes. I think there are only about 1000-2000 people who are making special plans to be in front of their smart TV or phone tonight to watch the game. I dont think you guys understand that for most things that are on TV, the majority of people watching are just people who happen to be home on their couch and are flipping through their channels trying to find what they feel is the best thing to watch. I realize that attendance for Pitt and Lou games has been very good but I also think that the vast majority of those people wouldn't have made special plans to watch that game on their phone or smart TV. We have all gone to games that we wouldn't have watched on TV. I go to Riverhounds games and Pitt baseball games for something fun to do. I never watch those teams on TV/phone. I went to that Liverpool vs Real Betis match. I'd never watch that exhibition match on TV.

The people going to Pitt/Lou are not what I'd consider to be diehard fans of those teams. They are local volleyball families for the most part who want to have a fun night out. They arent making special arrangements to watch this game at home on a Friday night. This isnt a difficult concept to understand. The ratings for it wouldn't be significantly better than a random soccer match and that's why its not on TV. If ESPN thought 500K were going to watch it on ACCN tonight, I assure you, it would be on.

That was a pretty good showing up against a full college football slate, by the way, but apparently at least 53k of those households can't be bothered.

No. You still dont get it. Only 1000-2000 of those people made specific plans to watch the game. The other 53K people just happened to be on their couch at that time and were flipping around and decided to watch volleyball. How dont you understand this?

Also, the college football games that it was up against last year were awful: Tulane/Memphis and Fresno State/Utah.

Right, right. Your anecdotal nonsense and logical fallacies always trump reality. Those weren't even the football games that were on so it makes perfect sense that we should believe your off the cuff arguments.

No. There literally probably isnt 1 person subscribing to ESPN+ specifically to watch this event. They do soccer on Friday nights. Regular season volleyball ratings are very low. This isnt hard to comprehend. These are non-revenue sports we are talking about.
I disagree. I subscribe to ESPN+ (through my Hulu/Disney+ account) and have watched several Pitt Volleyball games, as well as Pitt wrestling matches, on ACCNx as a result. So your comment about "literally probably isnt 1 person subscribing ..." is no longer true

Well, there is at least one person subscribing to see it. Me. The only reason I pay for ESPN + is to see Pitt teams: volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball. Still, this match belongs on ESPN.
mike412: I hadn't read this thread before seeing your comment. Me, too. The only reason I have ESPN+ (through a Hulu/Disney+ bundle) is to watch the Pitt games that aren't on ACCN or the other ESPN main channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, et al)

Again, not understanding. I meant there isn't one person paying to subscribe to ESPN+ tonight specifically for this ONE game.

October 13, 2023. Yes they were.

As other posters have said, the popularity of women's volleyball is reaching epic numbers. I could very easily see scores of fans subscribing to ESPN+ today or tomorrow to watch this ONE game. And then, they'd be set for any future games that will appear on ACCNx

FTR, I use YouTubeTV for my ACCN access. And occasionally we do have to "log in" again to get the ACCNx feeds (for certain sports) on ESPN+. We subscribe to a Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ bundle that is actually a pretty good deal, all Disney-things considered
