Huggy officially resigns

Well I'm glad he didn't injure or kill anyone yesterday. Something has to be going on with him. Early dementia???

Hope he gets the help he needs and doesn’t harm anyone. I was always entertained by him and thought he was a great coach.

As far as business - not sure how transfers work at this late stage. Any chance some of those are in play for us?
30 days to enter the portal and have to apply for a waiver. I’m sure most will be granted. Most will also not find as much money elsewhere and probably come back.

Excellent! F him and all drunk drivers.

On the practical front, I still think this “resignation” is a smokescreen to throw off WVU critics, and they’ll “leave the door open” to let him go through a “rehab” at that ritzy WV resort, and then bring him back later in the summer. But if not… Pitt needs to capitalize, raise a bundle NIL cash to throw at their better recruits and flip some.

There are two parts of a coach departure. The guy leaving, and the replacement. This is a school that places its sports above everything. The timing to bring in a coach right now is likely their biggest challenge…but they will open the vault, money (or ethics) will be no limitation. Would Pitino go there?

Pitino’s got one of the few jobs that appears to be working with a warchest like WVU. They just got a top 50 kid without a scholarship available.

Massiello will be able to procure a never ending money of NIL and um, other types of money for players at St. John’s with Pitino in charge. His older family is quite the CONNECTion if you catch my drift.

WVU is do to make another bad higher. I think the big money people decided that since the football program is a dumpster fire they could save the sports image by going all in on hoops with respect to NIL. Of course they had a hall of fame coach to guide them for a couple more years.

I hope they suck for the rest of recorded time

I mean they hired hall of fame coaches back to back. Has a pretty good track record of being a good job with a war chest of NIL and fan support. Gonna be pretty hard to mess this up unless they do 1 of 2 things:

1. Hire Andy Kennedy and keep the rest of staff and players. This is probably the direction they’ll go and it would be stupid. I’m hearing this is most likely outcome. Huggins would make sure his boosters who are loyal to him keep giving.

2. Hire Chris Holtman or Thad Matta because of ties to the president.

They are going to screw this up.

WVU cant screw up basketball, strangely enough. Plus they are perhaps the biggest NIL spenders now. I predict they lose 1 or fewer players because of this. Usually its a mass exodus when a coach leaves but their salaries are so high, I doubt any leave

As a result, West Virginia went all-in this spring in the transfer portal, bringing in three impact players -- Syracuse's Jesse Edwards, Arizona's Kerr Kriisa and Montana State's RaeQuan Battle -- to go with two Manhattan transfers who sat out last season. Starter Tre Mitchell and sixth man Joe Toussaint were also returning, giving the Mountaineers a borderline preseason top-25 team.

If they are paying so much, why couldn't they secure a better roster?

WVU might have pipe dreams of bringing Joe Mazzulla home, but I’ve also seen Ben McCollum’s name floated.

As someone who has got to see his work up close from about two hours away, this would most likely- and unfortunately- be a solid hire for them. The job he’s done at Northwest Missouri State is simply incredible, and there’s no doubt he’s one of the top 100 basketball coaches in the country, regardless of level. The only question is whether the jump from D2 to P5 would be too much at once?

I saw some speculation that they might give the job to Ron Everhart just for this year to try to keep the players from leaving and to give them a chance at a better hiring pool next spring.

That seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

They have a Top 5 roster. Everhart is a good coach and as long as they can keep that team together, they should do well. Sounds like a decent plan.

You would think this would take Andy Kennedy out of the running:

Jerrod Calhoun?

Too big of a jump, imo. They wanted Darris Nichols bad before all His DUI stuff.

I’d be shocked if they don’t land a sitting P6 head coach now. Thad Matta, Chris Holtman, Steve Forbes

OSU fans want Holtman out so WVU could do them a favor there. Steve Forbes is one I can see. And then that would start the Capel to Wake rumors which would only make sense that a Huggy DUI would adversely affect Pitt.

It shouldn't be hard to find a coach to replicate the last 5 years of WVU basketball. The last 5 of the Huggins era wasn't very good.

Not sure there would be interest either way, but Cal is probably going to be looking for a landing spot after this next season. This offseason has been a trainwreck and most of Big Blue Nation perceives the program as a dumpster fire that won't be put out until Cal is gone.

Yes, a coach who makes 10 mill plus and has an ironclad contract that makes sure he collects a HUGE buyout if fired is gonna look for a landing spot from the best job in college basketball in his mid 60’s. You’ve never posted once where I thought you had any idea about college basketball coaches.

He has a lifetime position as Kentucky. He’s not leaving voluntarily for WVU. It’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen posted on a message board.

In 2019, Calipari signed what has been called a lifetime contract at UK, allowing him to transition into an ambassador role with a $1 million contract after he retires from coaching

In a time when coaches are transitioning out of basketball early due to their hatred of the portal, NIL etc., John calipari is gonna give you 5 mill a year (or a huge buyout) and 1 million per year for life to live in Morgantown and coach WVU.

This was actually suggested on this message board.
