I don't understand why Coulibaly didn't play first 3 games

I really like Champagnie. He’s already better than Toney. He’s an explosive athlete and appears to have some ability to shoot from the outside.

IMO he and coulibaly were the bright spots

However for this team to be half decent this year either X needs to improve greatly or they need to find a Someone else to play PG. This team doesn’t have the talent to be decent without sound PG play

Maybe willing, but he didn’t really rebound any more capably than anyone else that night.
Only 1 board. He looked like he can be a really good player for us as he matures. I would guess he gets more consistent PT from here. I like champagnie as well.

Don’t give up on trey and X. That is silly. I have been disappointed in Toney so far this year. Love his warrior mentality, but he has not progressed offensively.

I think X and Trey will find their footings and be fine this year . What X is showing is that he’ll be here next season and probably the one after
that .
Toney is the kind of kid that if he was playing at a lower level would be a beast , but against the bigger stronger guys he’s going up against he doesn’t have enough size or strength to play his game . If he wants to stay at Pitt he needs to become a monster on the boards like a Jerome Lane and play great D and leave the scoring to easy put backs .

Really liked what I saw from Coulibaly last night. He’s not as good as Oscar, of course, but he showed some nice things and will be a nice player with more reps and confidence.

On a semi-related note, I was almost even more impressed with Samson George! The guy obviously has a lot of limitations and is essentially a walk-on type of talent who is on scholarship, but I thought he hustled well, stuck his nose in there, and was pretty close to converting a nice little and-one. For a guy who barely sees the floor and was put into action where he was clearly overmatched in a big moment, I thought he stepped up to the plate as well as he could have.

Lets all face the fact the Toney is just not a ACC offensive player right now and he needs to go to the bench and become a good bench player and come in and give us good minutes on defense because his offense sucks

One thing that excited me is his play in that international tourney that propelled Mali. Because I think he is better than we think.

I'm still a bit concerned that he simply does not get off his feet well. This was even the case against WVU. He has some skills with the ball though.

Toney was quite effective as a freshman, but like X, he struggling right now. He played well against fours at times last year. Again, like X, I think they are both thinking instead of just playing like they did last year.

I think your correct in that they’re both overthinking . I think in Toneys case what worked for him in high school just doesn’t work against more talented taller players . He has to find his niche .

Sure ... but some of that worked last year. I think he’s trying to get better and it’s working against him.

Sometimes you do go backwards in trying to improve , you just have to believe in the process .

There have been guys his size ( height ) that were really unstoppable underneath the basket , but they were physical beasts . Brian Shorter was 6’4-5” , Jerome was 6’5-6” , Blair , Sam Clancy , Nasir Robinson was pretty tough inside just to name a few . None of those guys missed so many dunks or have gotten their shots rejected like Toney is . I don’t know what the answer for him is , but being physically stronger won’t hurt .

Let's not give up on Toney. He came out of high school early so he has room to grow his game.

Toney simply doesn't have the length or explosiveness to be an inside player at this level. His best pathway in ACC ball is to improve his outside shot and get a better handle. He also could develop into a high post zone buster. Time will tell.

DT Toney did ok rebounding for his size and Playing D but his offensive game suck last year and suck even more this year he's just not that good offensively let's face it now can you get a little bit better sure when you work on your game you can get better but right now Pitt will be better putting him on the bench. IMO

We agree that we he’s struggling more this year that last year, but I suppose if you wish to term his offensive play as “suck” last year, that’s you prerogative. I don’t agree.

It just seems that he likes getting blocked by everything and everyone.
He needs craftiness.
He thinks he can go straight up on dudes.
He can't.
He needs to figure out either when he can go up with a shot or how and how to protect the ball when he does.
And for God sakes don't get blocked by the rim on a dunk anymore.

DT if you think it was good last yr I would hate to see your bad! His shot got blocked more than any player in the ACC and he has no jump shot. He's points come on a occasional fast break or a put back on the offensive rebound that was it maybe you don't remember but go back and watch some games he was horrible offensively and he's no better in the first four games this year. Now in saying that there is a chance he still can get much much better but he has to put up a thousand shots in practice a day and learn how to get a pump fake so he won't get blocked

If Toney could shoot the ball better than me we wouldn't be talking about him, instead we'd be talking about an aggressive guy who likes to mix it up and hit shots. But oh noes, he can't hit shots, but to his credit he battles even though he usually loses those battles. I don't know what his role i . We don't need an undersized 4 who tries hard. He is behind the freshman Champagnie and he belongs there until he can prove otherwise.

I never said “good.” That’s a word you added ... but not one I said.

I would say that he had a decent year for a freshman ... certainly better than “suck.”

This year, on the offensive end, he is not even playing quite close to the same level. His rebounding is not even at last year’s level, although his defense is still good.

I believe he will improve.

Toney better improve and Johnson as well or we are in for a long season. Both have struggled quite a bit to this point and they both need to be MUCH better if this team has any chance to be competitive.

Once again, Toney is in no way shape or form young for a college sophomore. He turned 20 the day of the Robert Morris game.
I am only saying that some kids develop over time and become good players when they are juniors and seniors. People are giving up on Toney 4 games into his sophomore season. We saw this every year when Jamie had this program at the top level. Kids contributing later in their careers.

Don't disagree in principle. However, IMHO, unless Toney really develops 3-ball proficiency and wins the job as our 2020-21 season's starting wing forward he will lose most of his PT to a returning Champagnie and the much taller and springier incoming freshman Noah Collier.
