Bodycam of Tennessee traffic stop, 2nd protective order found in Abrego Garcia case

Newly released body camera video from the Tennessee Highway Patrol shows what happened when Kilmar Abrego Garcia was pulled over in 2022.
Abrego Garcia was pulled over by THP about 115 miles outside of Nashville, Tennessee, for speeding and failing to maintain his lane. During the stop, a THP officer noticed there were eight other people in the vehicle, and despite Abrego Garcia telling the officer he was heading from Texas to Maryland, there was no luggage in the vehicle, according to a Department of Homeland Security document, “leading the encountering officer to suspect this was a human trafficking incident.”
In the body camera video, officers are seen shining a flashlight in the vehicle and speaking with Abrego Garcia, who is driving. The officer noticed there were four rows of seats in the vehicle, which he appeared to question, noting it was unusual.
“I’ve never seen one with this many seats in it,” the officer said. Abrego Garcia then told the officer the vehicle belonged to his boss. FOX45 News previously reported that the owner of the vehicle, Jose Ramon Hernandez-Reyes, pleaded guilty to illegally transporting an undocumented immigrant in 2020.
“You know what ya got, right? He’s hauling these people for money is what he’s doing,” one THP officer said to the other, as seen in the body camera video. “There’s eight people in there. He’s getting paid to haul these people, probably to Maryland if I had to guess.”
During Abrego Garcia’s traffic stop, he was not cited for the driving infraction but was given “a warning citation for driving with an expired driver’s license.”
“During the stop, a standard law enforcement database check returned information that prompted notification to the (FBI),” a statement from a spokesperson from THP said.
The body camera video comes as Democrats on Capitol Hill remain committed to urging the Trump administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States. Sen. Chris Van Hollen and others announced they introduced a resolution this week demanding that the State Department release a report about what steps have been taken to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return, along with any human rights issues in El Salvador.
“No one can communicate with Abrego Garcia, not his lawyer, that is a violation of international law,” Sen. Van Hollen said.
“We are going to force a vote,” Minority Leader Chuck Schumer added.
However, Republicans spent time this week asking questions about Abrego Garcia’s alleged ties to the MS-13 gang.
During a confirmation hearing for President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Drug Enforcement Administration, Sen. Lindsey Graham questioned Terry Cole about Abrego Garcia’s tattoos on his knuckles.
Cole said he’s familiar with MS-13 signs and the type of work the gang is involved in, like “extortion, kidnapping and money laundering.”
“Based on your time and experience in the DEA, what do these markings suggest to you?” Sen. Graham asked Cole while showing a photo of Abrego Garcia’s tattoos.
“Well, they suggest he’s an MS-13 member, those are his markings, that’s his brand,” Cole answered.
Last week, it was also revealed that Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, filed another protective order against him. This order was filed on Aug. 3, 2020, and she said Abrego Garcia verbally abused, kicked, slapped and shoved her.
Abrego Garcia took her phone and locked her out of the house with her three kids inside, according to the handwritten court documents filed by Vasquez Sura. She called the police, and when she was able to get inside, she told the court he slapped her.
“Police came and he acted violent with him + broke my phone in front of the officer,” she wrote in the protective order that was filed in District Court. “This is not the first time I have photos of all the bruises his [sic] left on my body.”
She told the court she and her kids were afraid, noting that Abrego Garcia had kicked and slapped her before. She also said she had a recording of Abrego Garcia saying “that even if he kills me, no one can do anything to him.”
About a week later, on Aug. 11, Vasquez Sura filed to rescind the protective order, telling the court that the son she shares with Abrego Garcia was celebrating his first birthday, and that Abrego Garcia has agreed to continue counseling.
“If not, his [sic] willing to sign divorce papers,” Vasquez Sura told the court.
The 2020 protective order request was filed a year before the 2021 order that’s already been uncovered.
In documents obtained by FOX45 News, Vasquez Sura claimed Abrego Garcia punched and scratched her, leaving her bleeding. Abrego Garcia later ripped her shorts and shirt, according to the 2021 petition.
In that filing, Vasquez Sura said Abrego Garcia hit her in August 2020 and left her with “a purple eye.” In November 2020, Vasquez Sura claimed he hit her with his work boot. Vasquez Sura dropped the 2021 order, later stating the two had worked out their differences.
“We have now found two petitions for protection against him, in addition to the fact that he entered the country illegally and is a confirmed member of MS-13. Our country is safer with him gone,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.
When news first surfaced about the 2021 protective order, Vasquez Sura said she survived domestic violence in a previous relationship, and filed for the protective orders “out of caution.”
“We were able to work through this situation privately as a family, including by going to counseling,” her statement said. “Our marriage only grew stronger in the years that followed. No one is perfect, and no marriage is perfect.”
“That is not a justification for ICE’s action of abducting him and deporting him to a country where he was supposed to be protected from deportation. Kilmar has always been a loving partner and father, and I will continue to stand by him and demand justice for him,” Vasquez Sura’s statement continued.
Betsy Smith with the National Police Association said the details revealed about Abrego Garcia’s past indicate to her that he is connected to MS-13 in some capacity, and said his wife’s actions aren’t unusual for someone in her situation.
“And when she gets in front of cameras and says that she wants him home, that is not untypical behavior for someone who is the victim of domestic abuse,” Smith said. “We need to look at the people that he has victimized, starting with his wife.”
Meanwhile, during an Oval Office interview with ABC News, Trump said he could call the Salvadorian president and discuss Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States, but said it hasn’t happened. Based on Trump’s views of Abrego Garcia, that’s not expected.
“If he were the gentleman that you say he is, I would do that,” Trump said during the interview with ABC News’ Terry Moran. “This is an MS-13 gang member, a tough cookie, been in lots of skirmishes, beat the hell out of his wife and his wife is petrified to even talk about him. He’s not some innocent man from Maryland.”
Tuesday, the federal judge in Maryland denied the Trump administration’s request to extend the pause in expedited discovery in the case and said the process will resume Monday.
