You know, I almost flew from LA for the two matches. An easy flight from LA non-stop to Minneapolis and then not a bad drive west to Fargo. Plus, I have good friends I was in the Army with in both Minneapolis and Fargo. Anyone whose been in the service in a war zone knows there is a special bond with the friends you served with there that never goes away.
But, between the weather and the government shutdown and its potential effect in the safety of air travel, at the last minute I decided to skip it. I’m very glad I did. Got to see the NDSU match streaming, and SDSU is terrible. Their only wrestler worth watching. Seth Gross, has missed the whole season so far with an injury.
More importantly, Roberto, my younger cat, almost died early Sunday morning, and if I hadn’t been home, the cat sitter wouldn’t have had any idea what to do. He was born with an enlarged heart, and when he was 3, a cardiologist who had examined him told me he wanted to prepare me for the fact Roberto almost certainly wouldn’t live beyond somewhere between ages 4 and 6 because of how enlarged the walls of his heart were.
Roberto now is 12 years and 5 months old. This was his second — and by far the most severe — episode of congestive heart failure, where his lungs fill with fluid because his heart isn’t strong enough to pump the fluid out. We got to the emergency room of a 24-hour pet hospital at 2:42 am. He was barely breathing, suffocating from the fluids. Not one person there thought he would be alive in the morning. He was released at 11 a.m. today, 32 hours later, and is home — weak, but alive. And getting his strength back.
Wrestlers are tough. But, when you talk about toughness, Exhibit A is a 12-year-old, 12 pound cat named Roberto Clemente Brourman!
