Interesting stat

Pitt is 4-1 in the ACC when missing at least 1 of Lowe, Leggett, Dunn (loss to SMU). 2-7 when all 3 play. I think all 3 are talented players but they are all just too similar. Johnson/McGowens/Toney II but actually good kids.
I don’t know if I would say the problem is they are too similar. I just think they are too selfish, or just prone to HeroBall rather than getting everyone involved.

Good point SMF. I said it when Dunne came back and I say it now. The guard play got way worse with Dunne. Lowe and Dunne tended to dominate the ball till late in the clock while the other 4 stood and watched. Lowe needs to start sharing the ball again when he comes back.

Play the Bosnian at the three and Austin at the four. GDiaz gets 12 minutes at the 5 and Cummings at least 15 minutes subbing for Lowe and Ish. Players will be rested and the chance for ball movement will be greatly enhanced.

I think Cummings should be the 1. Amsal the 3. Lowe and Leggett should split time at the 2. The more we play Lowe and Leggett together, the worse this team plays. They are just too similar. They don't promote ball movement, they just paralyze the entire offense. Hopefully Capel has seen the light after last game. We got plenty of good looks, but, we are not a very good shooting team and missed alot of them. It remains to be seen if we can continue to move the ball and get good looks against teams not named Miami. If I were Capel, Lowe and Leggett would not get more than 25-28 minutes and hopefully their time on the court together would be far less than that.

Lowe, Bub and Ish were able to play together last year effectively. They all played over 35 minutes against Wake in the ACCT. I’m not sure why the chemistry has been so poor this year.

Part of it is because Bub has an excellent basketball IQ that’s flashing in the NBA right now, and Dunn isn’t at that level (not a slight against Dunn, he’s just not Bub).

Part of it is because we’ve seen that the offense works better when only two of Lowe, Ish and Dunn are out there, and even better when it’s just one of them. Part of that is because Lowe, Dunn and Ish’s skillsets overlap a lot more than Lowe, Ish and Bub’s did. Dunn and Ish are very similar players. Having three guys who do similar things with varying degrees of success maybe doesn’t work that well.

Part of it is because they had an excellent perimeter shotmaker in Blake, where they could run a bunch of off ball actions to put pressure on a defense at the perimeter in a way that we can’t now.

And part of it is because last year’s center rotation helped to facilitate good offense and helped create good spacing, and this year’s primary center does neither of those things.

It is very obvious that, that is the way Capel is game planning. Or else he would yank one of them in a game, and demand ball movement. But he doesnt, and they play that way.

The difference in this past game is without both of those players, and Cummings starting, he was not allowed to play that way. Capel changed the game plan. It was clear Cummings was to told to pass the ball around.

I really dont think people see how every year Capel has been the coach, that he has allowed the 2 starting guards to dribble drive, even the year they went to the tournament, Cummings and Burton hogged the ball. Its Capel game plan. That is why there is hardly any game plans for bigs. Its the 2 guards and 2 spot up shooters standing around. Thats why Pitt is easy to game plan defensively. The opposing coaches know Pitt is heavy on dribble drives with their starting guards.

That was the reason I did not love the Dunn pick up. 3 guys who want to dominate the ball is too many.

In fairness, losing close games against Louisville, Clemson, at Wake, and at UNC is probably more impressive than beating Miami by 9 and squeaking one out at VT (especially given what they were at the time).
