an offense get 21 assists on 25 buckets. Gotta give Coach Young credit. I do not agree that Pitt was poor on its three point defense, help defense is a sound defensive principle. VT shot its season average percentage from three, no better than normal. And the guys in the corner left all alone in the final minutes was because of the press and traps and not due to Pitt's regular defense. So actually VT shot worse than normal against the regular defenses, contrary to popular opinion. Pitt lost the game on offense.

Champagnie shot 1 for 9 on 3s. Team 5 for 21. Uncharacteristically poor on FTs at 10 for 18 to cap it. End of story.

Actually, VT had 33 rebounds and we had 32. But that's immaterial at this point. The team defense at critical junctures was bad, so we lost. Offense and scoring is a result of good team defense and execution after playing that defense.
At least we only had 9 TO's. That's a good thing.
We do allow more completely wide open looks from 3 than any team I have seen this year.

We've been easier to beat off the ball. Guys are getting around our men a little easier leaving tons of holes to create wide open shooters.
VT had a quickness advantage at three spots....against Johnson, Brown or Coulibaly, and against Champagnie and because VT has no center they really spread the man to man defense. So the help comes from further away causing recovering back to your man to be a step or so late. Come to think of it that may be why the zone worked better than the man to man. The zone allowed Pitt to stay better structured. You would have thought VT would shoot threes better against a zone. I noticed Capel put Toney out front in the zone and Trey underneath...a new wrinkle.
