Well, we knew this was coming if we were paying attention. I wish him the best of luck. Maybe he can get some coaching somewhere that will help him. Jai Lucas, the new coach at UM, has probably been talking to him.

I expect there will be others to follow. That's 5 players lost to the portal now and 3 lost to loss of eligibility. We have 1 freshman coming in who won't make an impact in year 1, if he sticks around. What's Capel doing in the portal? He needs at least 5 high quality players there. We won't even know many of the players on this team next year.

Capel needs to change his name to Cialis and make it a point to add length and girth this offseason.

Lowe is a big loss on paper, but hopefully it's the impetus to a new philosophy whereby offensive skill isn't prioritized so highly above all else.

I said we would return 1 player: Cummings

This has a very real chance of happening. But, come on, this was a really bad team. Lost 13 of 18 against other really bad teams. At some point, it doesn't make sense to match what Lowe can get elsewhere. He has a ton of potential but was very bad this past year.

Like I've been saying, high school recruiting classes need to be 3-5 deep every year. See who the keepers are and nudge the others out.

When the roster turnover is this drastic, it's going to lead to like half the team just being warm bodies from the transfer portal. I'd much rather they be guys who at least have potential.

April Fools? ;)

Seriously, not shocked in the least. Corhen is probably not far behind.

Next year is shaping up to be a disaster. We’ll be close to where we were after Stallings was kicked to the curb.

That's what I thought at first, too. This has to be an April Fools joke. But it was multiple outlets reporting.

I think Lowe leaving was a given. He'll do better in a different system. His defensive liabilities will not be missed.

I also think you're right that Corhen will be next. Our whole starting 5 will be gone. I have zero confidence that Capel will be able to get the necessary pieces to make this team competitive next year. Even if he somehow got some really good portal guys, he and his staff wouldn't know how to coach them or prepare them. He was unable to prepare his team for games this year. What makes me think it will be any different next year?

Let's get some defense first players in here from the portal. Forget the offense. That develops from great defense. Watch the final 4 teams in this year's NCAAT, particularly Duke. Their defense is what drives them and produces transition and offense. All good teams have great defenses. That has to be the priority. But with Capel as the head coach, I doubt that will matter.

Will be interesting to see where he ends up. I dont get the hype around this kid though.

1. Hes a one trick pony. He can only go to his left.
2. Hes not a plus athlete. He's weak, isnt a threat to blow by anyone, and isnt a great leaper.
3. His three point shooting was awful last year (~27%)
4. His assist to Turnover ration (5.5 assists/3 Turnovers) was not very good.

He needs to work on his strength and athleticism, be better rounded off the dribble and improve his 3 point shooting. Hes far from a plug and play guy for a high profile program.

And I still disagree. I'd sign 0 HS players outside the Top 75ish unless it's a local kid who is more likely to stay. Everyone has to sign a new team every year. Pitt isn't the only team that will have to sign 10 new players. Probably 75% of teams will have to.

He has that family connection with Jai Lucas, the new coach at Miami. So I do expect him to at least be visiting with them and probably end up there.

His defensive liabilities are just too large to overlook. That's what I won't miss. I once thought he was our next great PG. This year, I realized he was nothing close to that and is expendable. He hasn't had the best coaching so maybe a new coaching staff will help him.

Good player. Still some upside. But he isn’t good enough to be “the guy” yet

Said this before. 15 years ago he would have been a redshirt freshman starting to contribute nicely as the team went into the tournament. Then looking to be a full time starter as a redshirt soph. And surrounded by other good maturing players.

That model can’t work anymore. Need to have deeper talent so a guy like him becomes a nice piece, not the star

Thank you for writing this before me. I agree.

He is an out of control ball handler who doesn’t understand the value of possession. Perhaps that’s because he is surrounded by players who can’t shoot, create plays or rebound. Nonetheless, he has been a turnover liability his first 2 years and I don’t see that getting better. Wish him the best. Hope it isn’t an April Fool’s joke. Based on his close relationship with Capel, tears flowing at the postgame presser, I am thinking this is about money and better exposure. What it means for the rest of the team is filling a roster with what NIL funds are available. We’ll likely see a group of players next season with less skill and more grit.

In his defense... kidding, he offers no defense at all.
Yeah, that too.

Also wondering who is going to clean the floor now that he isn't around to do it with his uniform. Have you ever a guy spend more time sliding across the floor? It's like the Pitt BB strength and conditioning program involves a couch and video games.

Now we wait for when Corhen announces he's leaving. It just seems inevitable.

We'll be replacing the entire starting 5 + a few good bench players for depth. I doubt we'll know more than 2 players on this team when it returns next year.

Corhen should be gone as well, which I don't think will upset many here.

I thought Capel had 2 more years here because of his contract length, but we may be looking at a Stallings-esque situation again after next year unless he can pull a miracle out of his hat and land a Blake and Burton out of the portal plus a supporting cast.

And then half the keepers leave for higher offers at better funded programs. It's probably not a winning strategy, but what we're doing now isn't either.

Lowe has a "Do Not Contact" on his transfer status. It seems to mean that he has made up his mind where he's going now and doesn't want anyone contacting him about possibly going elsewhere. He's probably headed to Miami.

Have to pay up to keep the ones who are worth it. Much better chance of them staying for a discount if you recruited them out of high school and they're used to your program/campus/etc.

I've said it before, but I've never seen two guys spend as much time on the ground as Jaland Lowe and Desmond Reid. There are multiple times per game when you wonder if each will get back up.

The current state of things makes me not even want to care anymore. The name on the front of the jersey means nothing to these players. Such a joke where we are now.

I'd probably think it was fun if we had enough money to recruit multiple very good players, retain said players, and then fill in the holes around them each season with more very good players. But we certainly do not. This next Pitt team could be scary bad. At least we play in the ACC!

Well there shouldn’t be too much complaining on this one if my memory of the comments on this board from during the ACC season is correct. Lowe was badly inefficient and seemed to suck the life out of the offense. I do think he will improve with better coaching, but this is no surprise and also a very replaceable position given Beebah’s presence and also the abundance of point guards in the portal.

This is college basketball today. 2022-23 was shaping up to be a disaster as well.

Exactly. Pitt is no further away from an NCAA berth than they would have been with the full roster returning. It’s free agency. Pitt will land a good roster, I have no doubt. The Capel Bros. ability to coach it up is another topic.

Pitt will land a full roster. How good they are or will be is quite another question.

They could be scary bad. They can also finish 5th or 6th because only Duke, UNC, Lou, Clem, NC St, and maybe Miami have more money to spend.

Lowe had some holes in his game , but he would have been the best returning player .

There’s no way to spin this other than to say Pitts Bb program is in chaos .

The real question is his departure a Bb decision or a NIL driven decision ?

If it’s NIL driven then what chance does Pitt have in attracting quality portal players ?

This is a bad day for Pitt Bb fans , next year could be Stallings 2.0 .

Again, just about every other program can be described as in "chaos" at the moment.

It's worth keeping this in mind. Mississippi State, who beat the daylights out of us and was a much stronger team in every way imaginable, has 5 players in the portal right now. Clemson has 6. It's nuts.

My concern is my lack of confidence in Capel's ability to identify talent and reload.

And both Clemson and Miss. State have significantly better head coaches and staffs than Pitt. Those 2 programs can get portal players and they'll develop. We get them and they never develop.

I kind of agree. He is a good college player. But if you are watching the better teams in the NCAA tournament, there are a lot of guards that seem much better than he is. He may go to the SEC or another major conference and find out life is harder than you think..

Spot on all points. Nice kid, but overrated, but too small for P4. Mid to high mid-major player.
