for all of his wins not one Final Four. And instead of getting closer Pitt was headed in the opposite direction. A change had to be made.

I'm sorry, the OP doesn't add up. The worst Athletic Director in Division I athletics over the past two decades was at Pitt from 2007-2014. The man literally failed at everything from about 2001 until he was euthanized by Gallagher. Note I think he did some good things in his first term.

The difference was that one A.D. gave Dixon unfettered control, and the other absolutely had to start reigning some of that in because things were trending in a bad direction.

So, Jamie punched out, found another friend like Steve in Texas and left. Good for him, that's how it works sometimes. Relationships matter. Being where you're wanted and needed matters.

Barnes may turn out to be good or horrid when this hire is weighed in full. But let's not act like Dixon's loyalty to Pitt was based on more than the fact that every time he or his agent flirted with another school Pitt threw more money at him.

In the end, Dixon's lifetime contract was the primary reason Pitt had to let him walk.

It's important to note that I'm not defending Barnes or the process here. But the reason Jamie loved Pederson so much was because Pederson let him do whatever he wanted, paid him more any time he looked around. Pederson was a terrible A.D. and the program's decline started under him.

As far as basketball, I'd take Pederson today.

And I'm not giving Barnes credit for Narduzzi as some have. That wasRandy Juhl.

LOL. Steve rubber stamping Jamie's scheduling and cutting him checks doesn't mean he was a good A.D. It's important to note that Steve had absolutely no choice but to do whatever it took to keep Jamie after his epic football meltdown in 2010. Losing Dixon at a time when the program was at an all-time high water mark would have been the other black eye that would have actually gotten him fired.

Unless you think giving any coach a ten year deal that effectively ties the hands of the AD and University should that coach trend down or worse yet completely check out is a good idea. Here's a tip, it's not. Coaches should NEVER be given more than five years at one time unless they have multiple national titles. Hell, Saban's contract is up before Dixon's was going to be. And trust me, I'm apopleptic that Stallings got six - that is ridiculous.

The last week aside, would anyone here have wanted Pederson to preside over a head coaching search for hoops after the football debacle? Not one. You're being a hyper-reactive emotional wuss.

I've not given Barnes credit for anything to this point. I wasn't even defending Barnes as this situation won't be fully judged for another four years, all the hyperventilating and hot takes from today aside.

How do you figure wrong direction? I think they bottomed out and were headed back up.

2014-15. Overall Record 19-15. ACC. 8-10, ACC Tourney Wins 0, NIT invite
(Fewest wins Dixin era)

2015-16. Overall Record 21-12. ACC. 9-9, ACC Tourney Wins 1, NCAA invite

The shame is in both years they were 2 very winnable Conf games away from being in 6th place and 4th place respectively.

But they didn't. Maybe if they win those games they get a hire seed in the tournament and win a game or two. Then we wouldn't be in this situation right now.

you do realize it took a miracle against Wake Forest to allow Pitt the chance to be a one and done this past season?

Again, Pederson did NOT originate the idea of giving Dixon a 10 year contract. That narrative is fslse.

He matched a competitive offer from USC. When we reached out to some good young coaches to replace Dixon, we were rebuffed so Pederson locked him up as a defensive move.

I have not heard how much Pitt has offered Stallings but it is supposed to be a 6-year contract. And Barnes was bidding against himself for a guy who was reportedly being fired.
