Recruiting is a bigger problem for Capel this year. I can live with the on court performance during a rebuild. But a rebuild needs players and we're about to lose Champ and Hugley is gone. Brown and Drumgoole should be gone if they had anyone to take their place. The remaining roster is a mish mash of ok to decent guys and a couple young guys we have no idea about.
They need at least 4 guys this year and have nobody. Don't kid yourself... it's a big problem that isn't going to be fixed by making some dude's top 8.
You don't need 10+ players deep to field a good team.
Case in Point, here is the Big Ten, the best league this year.
Number of players on each team with a 100+ ORTG power rating
1) Michigan-8
2) Illinois-7 (They have 2 additional players that are ORTG 99)
3) Wisconsin-7 (They have 3 other players at 98 ORTG)
4) Ohio State-10
5) Iowa-10
6) Purdue-7
7) Rutgers-6, 1 other player at 99)
8) Indiana-4 (has 4 other players 95+)
9) Maryland-6 (has 2 other players 90+)
10) Minnesota-6 (3 other players 94+)
11) Michigan State-8
This is Pitt as of today
Champ-120
AKC-114
Toney-106
Horton-106
X-105
Odukale-87 (been much better than start of season coming off injury)
Now where the wheels fall off
Brown-90, as a senior center
Collier-84
Sibande-81
Jeffress-76
Drumgoole-74
Pitt needs 2 players that are close to 100+ ORTG to be NCAA worthy. Again, we aren't as far off as people make it sound to be as we have a good base nucleus. You don't need anywhere near 10 quality players. 8 is the key number, 7 is pushing it but potentially doable. You aren't making it with 6 as the margin for error is razor thin.
