Jeff Capel is not the answer

The names are just being tighter lipped and Im being tighter lipped.

Mady Traore is a guy Ive mentioned months ago on here. He's a 6'11 power forward with lottery pick potential. He's already cut his list to 8 with Pitt in it and is a 2022 kid. And Traore can 100% reclassify. He is originally from France.

Again, Pitt has a wider net cast than Efton Reid for players on the table for 2021. That does not mean we will get these players, but there are more options on the table than just Reid. Pitt has a chance with Traore.

The Filipowski brothers from NY can also reclassify from 2022 as a second example. There are others...
And when they don’t get Reid or Traore... year 5 of Terrell brown!!!

Capel has recruited a good, competitive roster with growing depth. The team yesterday battled maybe the best team in the ACC all game without its 2nd best player. I’m not exactly someone who looks through rose colored glasses, but we need to keep perspective. I do agree that Capel and his staff have failed in recruiting a capable ACC-level starting big man, but the other 4 positions are in very good shape. Now, as for in-game coaching and preparation, I do think there are some shortcomings, but I am not casting any judgment until after 4 years.

4th year is a benchmark to where things need to start to move in my own opinion. There will be actual seniors on the roster worth something at that point and I understand the value of senior leadership and why is is very important. I will be much more critical toward Jeff if we dont make a decent jump next year and get back in the Tournament.

On the contrary, the entire nation particularly within Academia, but elsewhere, is quite concerned with the politics and rhetoric in matters of equality, BLM, etc. HCJC not only seems to check all the boxes, but also as a person of color, he has instant credibility by way of real life experience which can be viewed as an advantage when handling the delicate situations which occur in handling personnel found in any supervisory position. Is it no fair to say that those who share his vision are pulling for him with a bit more vigor had he not been a good representative of something they are passionate about?
No
His positions and statements as noted aren’t political
If you are uncomfortable with equality and justice -
That speaks to your distorted world view - not his .
I’m very liberal and I’ve been very critical of his job performance this past month .

because I’m a grown up who understands what matters are what doesn’t

Your first sensible post. Congrats!

Pitt is not an attractive school for 18 year old kids... cold weather and fans like some of you who are absolutely ridiculous. If I was an 18 year old I’d chose Miami over Pitt 100/100 times. It’s not Capels fault he inherited a dumpster fire. When he gets Reid and another top recruit in the 2021 class you all will still bitch if we lose to NC State or ND. Can’t wait for a 23-8 season next year and Pitt loses in the sweet 16 I’m sure you all will still say fire Capel because nothing is good enough.

Well that’s at least something a little more concrete. But the point remains Capel can target and go after anyone. But will ultimately come here. I could target 5 of the top 150 women in the world and unfortunately for me none of them would pi$$ on me if I was lit afire.

Lol they’re not getting Reid. He is going to the G league.

Will you just stop? You show up on the pay board once every 2 weeks or so and start claiming all your sources tell you Reid is coming here and we have all these top guys that are gonna commit smh. You know it's all bogus so stop with the BS. We'll be lucky to get a big man from the transfer portal yet you're claiming Reid is definitely coming give me a break.

Recruiting is a bigger problem for Capel this year. I can live with the on court performance during a rebuild. But a rebuild needs players and we're about to lose Champ and Hugley is gone. Brown and Drumgoole should be gone if they had anyone to take their place. The remaining roster is a mish mash of ok to decent guys and a couple young guys we have no idea about.

They need at least 4 guys this year and have nobody. Don't kid yourself... it's a big problem that isn't going to be fixed by making some dude's top 8.

You don't need 10+ players deep to field a good team.

Case in Point, here is the Big Ten, the best league this year.

Number of players on each team with a 100+ ORTG power rating

1) Michigan-8
2) Illinois-7 (They have 2 additional players that are ORTG 99)
3) Wisconsin-7 (They have 3 other players at 98 ORTG)
4) Ohio State-10
5) Iowa-10
6) Purdue-7
7) Rutgers-6, 1 other player at 99)
8) Indiana-4 (has 4 other players 95+)
9) Maryland-6 (has 2 other players 90+)
10) Minnesota-6 (3 other players 94+)
11) Michigan State-8

This is Pitt as of today

Champ-120
AKC-114
Toney-106
Horton-106
X-105

Odukale-87 (been much better than start of season coming off injury)

Now where the wheels fall off

Brown-90, as a senior center
Collier-84
Sibande-81
Jeffress-76
Drumgoole-74

Pitt needs 2 players that are close to 100+ ORTG to be NCAA worthy. Again, we aren't as far off as people make it sound to be as we have a good base nucleus. You don't need anywhere near 10 quality players. 8 is the key number, 7 is pushing it but potentially doable. You aren't making it with 6 as the margin for error is razor thin.

Let's hope in the next two years he is able to prove his critics wrong. I have been putting off a judgement for awhile and was hopeful for a brief period earlier this season. But taking into account all the elements that go into success as HC, I am in agreement with the assessments you have posted as of late regarding his ability to be The coach to turn it around.

It’s not fair to compare apples and oranges like Pitt to WVU or Tech. Those schools have two of the best coaches in the business. It’s appropriate to compare Pitt to like a Virginia Tech or Creighton or Boston College or about 30-40 other programs.

That’s the point he is making. It is all about the coach. Winning at a dump like Morgantown or Lubbock are two great examples.

Ah ok. I thought he was stating that Pitt should be in same vicinity/level of program as Texas Tech or WVU under Beard or Huggs on an annual basis.

Also, I would caution anyone who considers the characteristics of a college town to be a significant factor in recruiting, level of program, etc. Look at 80 or so miles to the east of you. That place is not special at all. I’ve been to State College. I’ve also been to South Bend, etc.

Cream is not exactly tearing things up at Georgia, but would you be willing to trade Capel for Crean?

Crean is absolutely a better coach at coaching.

If Bob Huggins coached this team this season you think our record now is 9-9 and 5-8 in ACC play? No way. We'd have at least 4 more wins.

If Beard was coaching Pitt, then we’d be in the Top 15 right now. No doubt about it. Pitt already proved they could do it under Howland and Dixon.

2 players made the difference to help Howland make the jump which is where we are now, almost the same crossroads to an extent.

Ontario Lett came into the program and Troutman came off his redshirt year. 2 players made the difference between Howland going 7-9 in the Big East the year before and 13-3 in the next year. Ironically, those 2 players filled the holes in the frontcourt, which is what the current team needs right now to make the jump next year. Also ironically, that team that made the 13-3 jump under Howland was only 8 deep, the same number I keep talking about. I guess you could throw Mccarrol in there, but he was a 9th man reserve.

Chris Beard is an incredible coach. So crazy to think he was at UNLV for a shot of espresso before leaving for Lubbock. Folks in Vegas (a surprisingly good following for the Runnin’ Rebs when they are good....even post-Tark) have to be thinking “what if”.

To add insult to injury Cronin had supposedly agreed to a deal with UNLV as well only to back out at the last second.

HCJC is a strong capable black man. That appears to bother some of you

Why do people have to keep bringing up race? Who cares?

Capel, so far in his career at Pitt, is nothing more than mediocre and his teams lack the strong character to keep going all year. That's a reflection of their coach. His teams typically fade in February and keep fading until the merciful end to the season. So far. None of that has to do with the color of his skin. It has everything to do with his ability as a head coach.

And stallings was a weak incapable white man and it bothered all of us. Why are you bringing race into this?

He’s been doing it the last couple days. He’s accused someone here who’s admitted he’s quite liberal (I am too in social matters) of not liking/ragging on Capel because he’s black. I have no question some Pitt fans probably feel that way as do some Steeler fans with Tomlin. But all criticism isn’t based in racism. It’s silly. I haven’t seen a bad word about Capel the man on here and that’s probably accurate. But when it comes to matters of Pitt basketball there’s lots of deserved criticism.

Right now they're staring at 4 players for next year, and two wildcards in Jeffress and Collier. You aren't going to win many games in the ACC with that lineup. Then you lose Toney and X.

They need a good class this year, and baring a miracle it's not going to happen. JC's recruiting has been mediocre. The results are a reflection of recruiting and coaching. I want him to succeed, but you can't win without a stocked cupboard.

Im pretty moderate and couldn’t care if the coach is white black green yellow or any other color. I care if we win.

HCJC is a strong capable black man.

Too be frank, I don't personally know any other kind of black man. Why would you single out these traits in Jeff Capel? What are the traits of a weak incapable black man? Do these traits make one man more acceptable to you than other traits?

I'm not sure I'd agree that Lett and Troutman were the two players. Especially not Troutman, as he really didn't have a role on that team until February. Basically, he took Torree Morris' role at the five midway through the season.

Lett added to what Howland had established in the BET tournament run the previous year. That's when the jump really happened, and Lett more or less replaced Issac Hawkins.

The reason for the jump was mostly because Brown, Page, Zavackas and especially Knight completely bought into what Howland wanted.

I do not necessarily disagree with what you say. However, this is the win share distribution of that team. And Lett and Troutman were in that Top 6.

Knight-6
Brown-4.6
Lett-4.5
Page-4.3
Zavackas-4.1
Troutman-2.2

Morris-2
Johnson-1

One thing Pitt fans are excellent at is making excuses for mediocre coaches who run mediocre (Narduzzi) to poor (Capel) programs. It's like they've been inflicted with Stockholm Syndrome. So let them criticize anyone with a critical eye. They really are the outliers. No need to listen.

He got an extension 1/20. He is here - for good and bad - until 2026.

I didn't realize he was signed through 2027. That means he gets 2021-22 AND 2022-23 and probably 2023-24 then the last 3 years get bought out. Maybe, by some miracle Coach K retires and Duke hires him.

Note: things look very bleak for Capel right now with NO recruiting class and potentially losing his best player from a really bad team but there's still a chance he can turn it around.
