Agree that getting wiped by ND for this WPIAL bumper crop is a devastating reality check as to where Pitt stands in the grand scheme of recruiting and college football.
FWIW, ND has been getting a lot of the top kids in other states too, notably Michigan and Ohio. I think last year they took 3 of the top 6 players in Michigan away from UM and MSU, no small feat.
But as far as understanding what ND did and Pitt failed to do, it's not about that. I'm sure nobody has worked the local kids harder and more sincerely than the Dooz, he is a high energy hands on recruiter with plenty of personality and passion, his players have loved playing for him everywhere he's been, and their parents love him too. But ND sells itself, always has, always will.
If you think we're frustrated by losing out on these kids, imagine how Narduzzi feels. He's a very competitive guy who doesn't take losing very well. I suspect coming in he thought Pitt would be an easier sell to the local kids. Well, he has 30 years of futility to overcome.
There's only one way to change their perception: start winning and stop looking like clowns that give up 650 yards to borderline top 20 teams. For that to happen, we need to get bigger, faster, and stronger for Narduzzi's defense to work as it should against real opponents. Don;t judge this team by what it does against the Villanovas or UVAs, judge it by what it does against real teams with real D1 players. Our LBs and DBs outside of Whitehead are honestly lesser players than a Central Michigan rolls out every Saturday (s is our QB and WRs but we're talking defense here). We don't have the players to put our DBs on an island all game long against a strong throwing team with real athletes on the outside. They are losing the athletic battles at the LOS and down the field. It's that simple. We also don't have good enough, athletic enough LBs to have them playing hard downhill all game long against that kind of opponent. They don't get home fast enough when they blitz and they don't have the athletic ability to recover and regain position when they make a bad read.
Hopefully, this 2016 class will end up being a big first step to fixing that personnel deficit on D.
