Joey. “ toast” Porter

They use a lot of people to do evaluations and it's all very subjective.

If they really had him outside the top 80 in coverage and outside the top 140 overall, I just have to call BS.

He was all conference. ESPN had him as a 2nd round pick (I assume the NFL did as well but their scout grades won't load). There simply weren't 100+ better corners than Porter, JR. There weren't. There probably weren't 10 better ones if we're being honest. They're just trying to be hot takey so people will talk about them.

Screw JPJ. As long as the steelers win, i want him to give up so many big plays (which he will)

The use like 50 people to do the actual per-play grading that are then reviewed by their 15-20 senior analysts. I'm going to go with methodology over any press

Do you really hate everybody and anybody who merely went to PSU?
i hated jesse james and that wr who was on our roster for a minute, the one from rochester.. I despise marcus allen too, mainly cause he sucked but i think we are finally rid of that clown..

i like Muth, i'll be rooting for J Peezy Jr too. Was too young for Franco but I'd have loved him if i was older. ditto with Jack Ham.

I am expecting good things from Allen Robinson and will be rooting for him.. Wasnt Whitman a nitter? No real passionate feelings towards him one way or the other. Didnt we have a Center who was a PSU guy? WE picked him up FA and he played well for us? Forget his name but he was pretty good.

That's fine. None of it really matters unless he can show it on the field. Having him going up against Pickens every day will definitely test his metal. Once games start, there isn't anywhere to hide.

About a year ago right after the Steelers had selected Pickett, we had the Kdka TV nightly call-in sports show on in the evening. This typical ahole PSU fan (I knew him to be such because he proudly proclaimed it to start his call) berated the pick, with the brilliant reasoning that “Pitt sucks.”

The host, who I believe was Josh Taylor (?) tried to engage in debate, pointing out KP’s many positive traits, value for the pick etc… but as is their wont (along with assaulting young boys), the PSU guy was having none of it. He ended his call this way:

“Well, as a Penn State fan and Steelers fan I have the best of both worlds with this. If Pickett somehow does good, it’ll probably mean the team did good, and I’ll enjoy that. But if he stinks like I think he will, I’ll have the satisfaction that drafting a Pitt bum ruined the team“.

This thread actually sparked memory of that call, because the shoe is exactly on the other foot this season. And if it’s ok for PsU fans to hate Pickett for being a Pitt guy and happy if he fails in that context, but hypocritically happy if he does well for the Steelers success, then I feel ok feeling the same about Porter.

Come on man, you are better than them!

So you are ok with PSU players as long as they are good? I’m ok with that.

Derrick Watt was paid 2.7m last year, he was a 4.7m cap hit, 1.9m of it was dead cap space. this isnt a debate.. he signed a 3 year deal that included '20, '21 and '22. He was not a free agent last year.

you are wrong, just like you told us all that Kendrick Greene was a good pick (Lol, that aged well)...

move on, you lost this one.. maybe this latch ditch effort of kendrick green as our backup fullback can save his career and you can count that as a win

Down goes souf.....again.....

You guys must have coworkers and neighbors that went there. Do they know that you hate them?

You can't be serious.
I don't hate the people (at least most of them) as much as I hate the "fan" that lives inside the people. As a collective group, psu fans are so freaking arrogant and obnoxious that it makes it tough to be around them.

come on man, dont back off this statement now. stick to your guns. i respect that. no apologies, no shame.

I'll openly admit that i wanted Jesse James to blow out his knee every single time he caught a ball for the steelers and im a die hard steeler fan. dont even get me started on the words that spewed out of my mouth when he cost us the game against the patriots (and the #1 seed) by not holding onto the ball.

I don't think making all conference necessarily translates to someone being worthy of a high draft pick. I do find it interesting that he had one career interception at PSU.

Also interesting that PSU has never had a DB selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

what concerns me is we all think he's this big, physical CB but the psu fans who i've talked too, who are also steeler fans, said despite his size, he actually played really soft. not this tough guy who will stick his nose in and stop a running back or anything like that..

i guess we'll wait and see but it looks like tomlin is all in on him since he's already listed as the starter on the depth chart.. for steeler nation sake, i hope he's legit or we are in for a long year.

Then you haven’t talked to enough PSU fans. He definitely isn’t soft. He may not be the most physical CB I’ve seen, but he’s not afraid to support the run defense at the LOS. I think Steeler fans will be pleased, unless you’re a Steeler fan that roots against a your own player just because he went to PSU.

Ok well we will find out and I hope those psu fans are wrong.

I'm not saying he was worthy of being pick 32 (I do think he was). I'm saying that I think PFF is full of crap if they graded him out and there were 140+ better CBs in college football. I think that's just not true based on the totality of evidence.

Deion Sanders was one of the softest DBs ever and he's in the Hall of Fame. Porter isn't anywhere near his level, but if he won't stick his nose in there to stop the run, who cares? They drafted him to shut down opponents No. 1 receivers.

He's not Revis and never will be but Revis had 6 INT's in his career and none in his senior year. He didn't have a bunch either in the NFL.

I don't know what Porter Jr played in scheme-wise in college. But, I do know that press man guys usually don't get as many picks as zone/off man guys do - see Revis.

6 INTs is 6 times more than Porter Jr. I don't think that comparing Porter to Revis in a post is fair to either of them. But as a Steeler fan, let's hope Porter Jr. is closer to Revis than to Artie Burns.

Teams really started to avoid throwing in Revis' direction if they could help it. Even in the NFL.

That's an embarrassing looking rep for a 32nd pick.
lets just hope his coverage skills are better than his tackling skills. like i said, multiple psu fans i spoke too talked about how truly soft he was with tackling and run support.

but like someone else said, we need him to cover wrs, not lay the wood with run support. if he can cover nfl wrs, we will all live with him whiffing on open field tackles.

Good god, I dont think he backed off his statement, he just clarified it.

And I hate penn st (in my house when anyone says this word my kids say öooooohhhh you swore!") and can honestly say I would never want another human getting injured and ruining a career just because I hate the institution.

Also, we dont even need to root against their players in the NFL... quite honestly we are so far ahead of them in NFL play, it is not even close. And their players are consistently unprepared for the NFL, get hurt, dont know where the huddle is... etc... Where as our players seem to be bad @ss mutherf*ckers from the get-go.

NFL coordinators will run that little WR screen all day if you can't defend it. And CB's who can help in run support have been a big part of the Steeler defense for a long time.
