This might not be news to other Pitt posters but it was to me. Apparently Unitas
wanted to go to ND, but they didn't take him because of his size (135 lbs.).
His next choice was Pitt, but he failed the entrance exam and Pitt wouldn't
accept him. I recently read this story in a posted newspaper article from
Olean N.Y. That's the town where St.Bonaventure is located. They played
football back in the forties and fifties and Unitas made his starting debut
against them. The Bonnies' claim to fame in that story was that they beat
Louisville and QB Unitas with their own hall of fame QB, Ted Marchibroda.
So.....He coulda played football for Pitt if he passed the entrance exam according
to this newspaper story. Can you imagine such an exam today?? Ha!

I’ve been to olean, ny, doesn’t surprise me that this remains their only claim to fame. Casino in that area. You ever feel down, You want to feel better about your life, go to a casino in olean Ny and look around at the patrons.

I'll bet 110% of them smoke and drink daily.

Sounds about right for Pitt.

They could do one of those Pitt history flashbacks that they play during timeouts.

But instead of John Brown catching a TD, they could show all of the ways Pitt football has shot itself in the foot over the years.

I believe this is the first officially recognized instance of Pitting.

Wasn’t pitt invited to rose bowl back in 30s and they let the players vote and they didn’t want to play in it?

Johnny Unitas' College Career (taken from Wikipedia):

In his younger years, Unitas dreamed about being part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, but when he tried out for the team, coach Frank Leahy simply said that he was just too skinny and he would "get murdered" if he was put on the field.

Instead, he attended the University of Louisville. In his four-year career as a Louisville Cardinal, Unitas completed 245 passes for 3,139 yards and 27 touchdowns. Reportedly, the 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) Unitas weighed 145 pounds (66 kg) pounds on his first day of practice. His first start was in the fifth game of the 1951 season against St. Bonaventure, where he threw 11 consecutive passes and three touchdowns to give the Cardinals a 21–19 lead. Louisville ended up losing the game 22–21 on a disputed field goal, but found a new starting quarterback. Unitas completed 12 of 19 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns in a 35–28 victory over Houston. The team finished the season 5–5 overall and 4–1 with Unitas starting. He completed 46 of 99 passes for 602 yards and nine touchdowns (44).

By the 1952 season, the university decided to de-emphasize sports. The new president at Louisville, Dr. Philip Grant Davidson, reduced the amount of athletic aid, and tightened academic standards for athletes. As a result, 15 returning players could not meet the new standards and lost their scholarships. But Unitas maintained his by taking on a new elective: square dancing. In 1952, coach Frank Camp switched the team to two-way football. Unitas not only played safety or linebacker on defense and quarterback on offense, but also returned kicks and punts on special teams. The Cardinals won their first game against Wayne State, and then Florida State in the second game. Unitas completed 16 of 21 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. It was said that Unitas put on such a show at the Florida State game that he threw a pass under his legs for 15 yards. The rest of the season was a struggle for the Cardinals, who finished 3–5. Unitas completed 106 of 198 passes for 1,540 yards and 12 touchdowns.[6]

The team won their first game in 1953, against Murray State, and lost the rest for a record of 1–7. One of the most memorable games of the season came in a 59–6 loss against Tennessee. Unitas completed 9 out of 19 passes for 73 yards, rushed 9 times for 52 yards, returned six kickoffs for 85 yards, one punt for three yards, and had 86 percent of the team's tackles. The only touchdown the team scored was in the fourth quarter when Unitas made a fake pitch to the running back and ran the ball 23 yards for a touchdown. Unitas was hurt later in the fourth quarter while trying to run the ball. On his way off the field, he received a standing ovation. When he got to the locker room he was so worn that his jersey and shoulder pads had to be cut off because he could not lift his arms. Louisville ended the season with a 20–13 loss to Eastern Kentucky. Unitas completed 49 of 95 passes for 470 yards and three touchdowns.

Unitas was elected captain for the 1954 season, but due to an early injury did not see much playing time. His first start was the third game of the season, against Florida State. Of the 34-man team, 21 were freshmen. The 1954 Cardinals went 3–6, with their last win at home against Morehead State. Unitas was slowed by so many injuries his senior year his 527 passing yards ended second to Jim Houser's 560.

I read about this in the Unitas book that came out in 2004. He had a C- average in high school and had to face a school board to discuss admittance into Pitt. He was declined, obviously. He wanted ND first, but then Pitt to be close to his mom.

Incredible how a university can make so many bad decisions with a football program. Just one bad one decision after the next since 1938.

Eh. The situation suggests Joe Flacco. Flacco was built like a Festivus pole when here. If he'd actually played in real games for us, with our porous line and his lack of mobility, Flacco might have been killed, almost surely would have stunk, and likely would be selling life insurance today. It probably would have been similar for Unitas as a Panther in that era.

Yes they voted not to go after the 1938 season. That was Sutherland’s last year and the administration would not approve a money allowance for the players which was apparently legal. The previous Rose Bowl appearance the coaching staff gave the players a small amount of money from their own pockets.

Weren't Pitt and the other Eastern Schools severely limiting scholarships during that time? Not sure when they started but Pitt kept to agreement until Majors came in, Paterno cried about it even though he ditched the agreement years before.

If Flacco stayed the 2007 line he would have played with had two NFL draftees, along with CJ Davis and Joe Thomas. The center was the weak link but not enough to bring that unit down. Flacco would have had a terrific senior season and that Pitt team would have been really good.

This man is Olean’s claim to fame; I live 45 mins from there and know the town well. Not everywhere outside of Allegheny County is a backwater hell. There sure is a lot of unwarranted elitism and snobbery on this board.

Sorry man, I didn’t mean to offend. I have a cabin not to far away and I love it up there. Just didn’t care much for that casino but every casino to me is depressing.

On a positive note, there used to be a girl up there in that area that’s claim to fame was she could crush a full can of beer with her bust. So it’s not all bad

Funny story. I was covering for a vacationing pharmacist at a pharmacy up there years ago. An elderly couple came in and asked if she could wear two nicotine patches at one time to try to quit smoking. I said you need to talk to your doctor, but the strength you start with depends on how much you smoke. I asked her how much she smoked each day. Her husband turned away from the counter and she said "two cartons per day" I said you mean two packs? Her husband turned back around and said "no, she smokes two cartons per day".I was dumbfounded. I told her to talk to her doctor about that. After they left, the other customers all started talking about it. None of us could figure out how anybody could smoke that much.

The abuse some people do to themselves is overwhelming.

That's borderline suicidal.

That is literally a lit cigarette from the moment of waking up to the moment of going to sleep minus maybe 5 minutes to shower at 2 cartons a day. Every other moment of the day there is a lit cig that you are puffing on.
Cooking, cleaning, watching tv, driving, going the bathroom, talking on the phone, shopping, basically anything and everything but sleeping and showering you are smoking. He'll you are smoking while eating at that rate.

If she was truly smoking that much, makes me wonder how old she actually was. For all we know she could have been in her 50's, he'll maybe even 40's.

I feel bad for the husband. He’s breathing that in, guarantee the house smells like garbage and oh yeah, he’s probably the one dropping a couple hundred bucks a week too

The Bonnies' claim to fame in that story was that they beat
Louisville and QB Unitas with their own hall of fame QB, Ted Marchibroda.
So

So Ted beat out Johnny twice! The year the Steelers cut Johnny U in training camp, Marchibroda was their starting QB that year. LOL!

That sounds impossible? That's 400 cigarettes. 20 packs. She must never leave home, Smoking is restricted everywhere.

yeah, doing math on that makes this a tad unlikely. lets give her 14 hours a day devoted to smoking, that's basically a cigarette every 2 minutes.. of course my math is always off so if im wrong, feel free to call me out..

And the clientele at River's is much better? Half of them are wheeled around on oxygen but still clinging to a cig. But man, try and sit at their slot machine when they are just going to the bathroom and they all possess herculean strength to fight you off.

like I said, casinos are depressing. I've never spent too much time in the "high rollers" clubs though, the ones in James Bond movies.. They don't let people like me in those rooms..

My guess is she smoked part of each cigarette to make an attempt to stop but never could. Just a waste of a bunch of money and cutting years off her life.

Maybe she added a few beers a day to counter the effect of the cigarettes.

They must have concluded that dark dank musty and hideously decorated establishments make people more prone to gambling foolishly. Because all the places look that way. Rivers looked 45 years old on the first week it opened. I have a friend(addict) who craves to go there before football games now, it is convenient for that but i hate it. The bar on the first level usually has a band and that isn't too terrible so I agree to that much. He usually goes two hours before we meet, gets his losses out of his system, then we meet up for a couple beers before the game. Depressing though.

This is true . I no longer frequent Rivers . Now they have iLottery on line and when I visit , 5 minutes into it and im down 100 bucks my own living room becomes a dark , dank place ! Lol.
