Join LaMont Wade at his commitment party

OK. Can Lamar Jackson throw a party, charge a $10 cover charge, have 1000 people show up and walk away with $10,000? Come on, this is obviously some sort of NCAA violation. You cannot make any money in any way based off of your athletic abilities or status as a D1 athlete or prospect.
Both Chris and Ryan have stated as such. It's not a violation. Furthermore, how can the NCAA have any authority over anyone who hasn't even signed a letter of intent? Nor is a university involved.

God you people are so freaking NEGATIVE !!!!
Everybody was on his jock and now a rumor gets out he isn't coming to Pitt (and may go to PSU) and all of a sudden he is such douche, a **hole etc.
GROW UP !!!!! Really grow up and get a life. I'm not a alumus but I love Pitt (sports) and would like for him to come here but if he doesn't so what, wish him well and move on he is.
And think about this if your son was being recruited would you want to play in front of fans this fickle who turn on you at the drop of a dime.
I really can't believe you people. if you don't like the party don't go. But either way GET A LIFE AND GROW UP !!!

I know, we get it.... If he chooses PSU (as anticipated), it's not a violation. If he chooses anyone else but PSU, it is a violation... The nitters track record for hypocrisy is well documented....

Go hang out somewhere else, like maybe the PSU locker room shower...

Show me where I said this? Look at the sources I cited. Keep making crap up, because that's all you do.

But come on. This party thing is kinda douchey.

The kid has a right to go where he wants to go but I get the feeling he is a bit too full of himself. A party after 10pm?

That was my 1st thought. In college a party starting after 10 was the norm, probably closer to 11, but in HS the parties started around 7:30/8ish. Most of us had to be back home by 11/11:30.

You didn't answer my question:

Is it an NCAA violation for Lamar Jackson throw a party, charge $10 to get in and walk away with $10,000?

a) Yes

b) No

To be fair... Lamar Jackson is IN college, with a scholarship at a D1 program.

Lamont Wade is *NOT*.... and is therefore likely not currently subject to any NCAA restrictions. At least not until he signs a letter of intent.

Lets say this ISN'T an NCAA violation, if I am a star athlete, I am hosting parties with a cover charge every weekend. I mean some of these guys could make $100K/year doing this.

I mean this is such an NCAA violation.
Yes.... for players who are currently under NCAA jurisdiction.

Lamont Wade is a HIGH SCHOOL kid.... and outside the NCAA at the moment.

I think you missed my point which was the non answering of a direct question but rather changing the subject. I realize that for a college scholarship player to charge money and pocket it is a violation but not so for a high school player. LOI means much more than who you are playing for if you read the document from start to finish.

I disagree.

A party with his friends and family... is far better than a gymnasium with hats and a press conference. I think THAT is douchey.

I think it looks like everyone is most upset with the 3 dollar cover. I would hope that is for the family who will be having to feed, provide drinks for anyone that wants to come (media, fans). I am ok with that too.

Now, if there is some flamboyant video production and huge spectacle, then yeah, I will agree. But no less douchey than a pink suit

Well... on Dawson street, I threw a party every other Thursday night, and charged money, and we paid for our rent each month that way.

Even though he is a HS student, it is a violation of amateurism rules to profit off of athletic talents.

Could LeBron James have started a party enterprise while in HS?

It makes no difference whether you are in HS or college. You violate your amateurism status if you profit off of athletic talents and charging admission to a commitment/graduation party would definitely qualify.

To be fair, I doubt anybody turns this into the NCAA and if they do, Wade probably just has to pay back the money he made (donate it to charity) and maybe get a 1 game suspension.

That makes sense

First off, my degrees are from Bloomsburg University, and Arizona State University. Second, Lamar is a college student, Wade is not. Apples and oranges. The NCAA has limits on earned money.

Well, I am sorry you couldnt get into the school that literally takes all applicants.

But, I think the question was amateur status in general here. By the way, I dont see a problem with Wade's announcement in the least either.

Since he is only a HS student, can Wade also hold an autograph signing, charging $10 per autograph. After all, he's just a HS student so the NCAA wont care right?

How would you possibly know where I was accepted? I stayed closer to home because my father passed my senior year. I actually started at Lycoming College for that very reason.

Clairton, 10 PM on a Saturday night, an open invitation to the world with a small, but albeit, questionable cover charge. What could possibly go wrong? Good thing that it is winter time and cold outside.

You have to know, that is not the same scenario. Like I said, you don't believe me, ask Chris, he checked himself.

I don't see the big deal. Let the kid have a party and announce how he wants. If nobody cared about it, then there would never be press conferences, recruiting sites breaking news, and even after parties. He can only do this because people will care enough to show up. If it isn't a rules violation, then I see no problem in the young man making some money this way. Might be wrong, but give the kid some slack. I love the Pitt Panthers but I don't see any reason to bash a kid for picking what school is best for HIS future and if he wants to announce it with an after party. Have fun and enjoy your family and friends.

No he just seems like a complete tool bag like his father who is so full of himself and things he's bigger than whatever school he is going to.
