JR Smith trying to play on NC A&T golf team

If you need clubs just got a set of Mizuno irons custom made while only waiting three weeks .
That’s surprising but I don’t need clubs. Do have Mizzys tho.

My buddy inquired about Pings a few weeks ago. 12 week minimum. Another buddy bought Titleists earlier this year and I think it was 7 weeks. And he’s good friends with the rep. And they were bone stock.

Interesting. I don’t believe that’s the case in the Pittsburgh area with private clubs but it’s not shocking to hear it is happening other places. But I’m not too tied into that scene so I could be wrong.
Some of the fringe clubs still have issues around here and offer limited discounted memberships , but any of the nicer private courses are thriving .

They were on 6 week back order a month ago , but I was told 3-4 weeks which turned out to be only 19 days . Shafts and grips are hard to get . PXGs are made and shipped within 5 days . They really need to get these ports working more efficiently.

I don’t think the higher end ones here have had too many issues. Oakmont, Fox Chapel and that level I believe are just fine and have been. The ones that have had issues are more the mid to low range clubs.

Yea it’s not just the it’s the components too. I almost fell over when I saw the price of grips at golf galaxy. The NDMCs were up 20+%.

I know PXG is getting stuff out. Until recently I wouldn’t have even considered them. Outrageously overpriced.

And I don’t know how ports work but if goods are somehow prioritized some things like golf equipment will be sitting a little longer than necessities.

Good article. There has been a net reduction in golf courses every year but 1 out of the last 15 years. But it seems as though the market may be close to done correcting itself.

I cant imagine that golf is anywhere near as popular for people under 30 as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. As today's golfers die off in the next few decades, who is going to replace them?

Yea the last boom was way overdone. Totteridge was among the last courses built around here and they must have taken a bath. They were private for a very short time and have been public since. The last time I was up there they still had many plots of land available. There’s another course whose name escapes me that stopped building after 9 holes.

The age thing is one I can’t answer. I don’t know the demographics. But I see plenty of younger people out. But that doesn’t mean a whole lot. There are some different kids programs (not just the first tee) and college golf is quite healthy. I do think there are a fair amount of foreign players on both the men’s and women’s teams. But I would imagine the demo breakdown is easily gotten with a google search as well.

According to this golf among the young is pretty healthy

I find the info about women interesting. Only because I’ve played more than my fair share of golf and I don’t see that many women on the course. Nowhere even close to 25%. Probably closer to 10% of all of the people I’ve seen on a course over the years.

Blackthorn is the 9 hole course near Harrison City.

Totter had a record yr last season and was doing very well this yr . I played at Totter when it was a private course and the management was solely responsible for its demise . They made the place too exclusive. Totter has one of best layouts , if not the best in the area , the weak link was the bunkers which they’ve started addressing . The worst part about Totter is that too many novice golfers play there and play from the wrong set of tees . It’s not a course for a beginner or a hack . When your drive goes 210 yds you shouldn’t be playing the black tees ! There’s not a better public access course for the money in the area .
Several yrs ago a new partner took over the real estate and the place is booming .

They’ve made it more playable over the years. When they first went public it was the hardest public course around and whatever second place was wasn’t even
close. But yea the bunkers were awful. Haven’t been there for a few years so glad they’re getting it back. It is a real nice track except for #7.

The tee thing is a problem everywhere. There needs to be a shift from gender based tee boxes to handicap/ability based. Not many men are going to move up and play the ladies tees. Hell I knew older guys who were too stubborn to move up to the senior tees. One eventually did and he started enjoying it again because he wasn’t hitting 4 and 5 irons in to every green.

Anyone who pays whatever it is 50K/100K to join those clubs should immediately be checked into Western Psych. I wouldn't join those clubs if it required me golfing once per month if you paid me $5000. Walking around and hitting a small white ball a bunch of times is one of the stupidest ideas I can think of. And people actually pay tons of money on this.

To each their own with what they like and don't like, but how is walking around hitting a small white ball a bunch of times any different than trying to throw a ball through a ring mounted ten feet off the ground, or having a bunch of people chasing after an oblate spheroid trying to cross a line painted on the ground, or someone trying to hit a ball with a stick or people trying to hit a small black puck into a rectangle with a stick while, of all things, skating on ice?

When they went public they cut out all the fescue surrounding the fairways which took away the visual intimidation of the tee shots . Plus you could find and hit your ball !
#4 the banks of the creek in front of the green were all fescue making it a very risky shot to go for the green in 2 .
#7 the hills separating the various levels in the fairway were high ruff making your next shot very interesting , so distance control off the tee was a must . Without that the balls rolls out several levels making it an easy birdie hole .
The greens most days are considerably slower , but still a pretty nice speed .
Best public course in area along with Cranberry Highlands .

There’s lots of private clubs that don’t cost anywhere near that much. Even the first year with the initiation fee/bond.

And yea we get it. Anything you like is great and everyone should be into it. Everything else is dumb.

Because people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on that garbage for something that takes up an entire day.

Listen, if golf was free and took an hour or 2, maybe it would be fun to go once or twice a year. But these guys spending on all this time and money on a stupid hobby....I don't get it.

The first year or 2 the fescue was still there. They gradually cut it back until they got rid of it completely. If they hadn’t, 6 hour rounds would have become the norm.

To people putting out to you what is a large sum of money is not an issue to them . Why would buying a box at Heinz Field to watch Fb or court side tickets to a bb game be any different ? A lot of people have a lot of cash , might as well enjoy it while your alive .

Trust me nobody wants to spend hours with you either at any price so we all win. Stay home and watch futbol all day.

You can just stay at work and post nonsense all day !

I read an article where his coach made it seem like competitive golf was so much different than non-competitive golf. I don't understand how. Please explain. Golf is an individual sport like bowling. Yea, you might be on a team but the team means nothing when you make your drive or try to sink a put. Its you vs yourself vs the course, not other players.
It is very different. No mulligans , gimme putts, stroke and distance for out of bounce all enforced and you put a lot of pressure on yourself to do well. Sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella compares it to walking on a balance beam sitting on the ground vs walking on a beam 40 feet in the air with no net to catch you if u fall.

I’d bet he’ll be on the team. How much he plays will be the question. I imagine they’ll throw him out on the course a few times but he’s probably not gonna have a score that counts. Most casual golfers would kill to get to a 5 but he’ll get carved up in college. And as you said there’s golf, then there’s tournament golf.

I know years ago I read where there were many more slots available on HBCU teams than black golfers. I think that’s still the case. I have no clue how common it is for non black students to attend HBCUs but those golf teams were filled up with non black athletes. And I suspect that’s still the case. I know Steph Curry’s been involved helping financially donating a ton of $$ and trying to bring attention and maybe this will help too.
A girl from Rockwood High School
