Jurkovec in portal

If I believed that Narduzzi would actually let Yarnell and Jurk compete for the job and give it to the most deserving candidate, I'd be good with it, however, I have my doubts after what we saw playout this year.

Who on the roster was better than Slovis? Slovis wasn't good, but I have to believe someone else would have played if they were better. I doubt Narduzzi wants to lose on purpose.

Only two problems.

We don’t know that Slovis is actually leaving.

We don’t know that Jurkovec actually wants to come here.
Yes, I am legit worried that despite the fact many of you are down on both of these QBs, we end up with neither, and have a debacle of a regression year in 2023

How did Jurkovec know that he wasn't beating out Kenny Pickett. My God, the guy was the #2 Dual Threat high school QB in the country coming out of Pine-Richland, why would he think that he couldn't beat out 2018 version of Kenny Pickett??? I doubt that was the case. Pickett was "decent" back then far from the Heisman Trophy Finalist that we saw last year.
I am almost certain there was a newspaper article from back then saying it was Pitt that spurned him. PJ was interested in transferring from ND to Pitt, but Pitt told him we did not have a spot. Pickett obviously had been given the keys to the offense by that point, but I also believe we had a bunch of other QBs on scholarship at the time -- that might not be true this time around.

If we have Cignetti as OC and an immobile oft injured QB like Jurkovec(but he is a yinzer so big yinzer points) this is a 5-7 win team who then has to reload the next year.

Go out and get a good passing OC and then let them look at the transfer portal for some mobile talented QB who is leaving a major program after getting passed over or a QB looking to move up from a lower level.

Jurkovec had one decent year and has one year left coming off a season ending injury. If he wasn’t a yinzer no one would have interest in him.
PJ is far from immobile. The guy we currently have is the immobile one.

Frankly it's six in one hand, half dozen in the other for me. If I had to choose, I'd probably take PJ because his legs provide an added dimension.

However, I'm pretty confident that there's no chance both guys are here. If PJ comes Slovis will be gone.

I tend to think this is the case as well. And since Cigs has a relationship with both guys, I would assume he has a pretty good pulse on the situation.

I call it that because it is the same type of an offense that we ran in high school as did most of our opponents. Sadly, it is still being ran in a majority of SWPA football programs to this day.

We faced 1 team that was primarily under center that used a fullback this past year.

I'd estimate 75% of the WPIAL schools are shotgun spread teams.

Hardly anyone is living in pro-style.

You mistyped its five wins time for Tina sunseri 2.0. But hey he’s a yinzer.
actually, the fact that he is from pittsburgh and is a yinzer and spurned us already (Maybe even twice) hurts him with pitt fans.. had he just been some QB from California in same situation, many of us would probably be more welcoming to the possibility of him coming here.

We should take Jurkovec and Veilleux. We will win 11 games next year with a healthy Jurkovec and Veilleux can learn under him for a year and staart the next two years. Dynasty in the making

so about that Starting QB from ND who just entered the portal. I am sure he has better suitors but can we at least give him a call or a text before we settle with mediocrity.

If Slovis is playing wishy-washy, you're going to have to pull the trigger one someone.

If that someone only has 1 year of eligibility, Phil is probably the guy because at least he knows and likes Cig's system.
How about the qb who is leaving psu?
Or literally anyone else than a broken down and immobile qb

There are literally going to be a shit-ton of QBs hit the portal this year. It's going to be crazy.
That's fair, just don't know enough to say how we'd do on that (de facto) free agency market, especially since I don't know what our NIL numbers are like for a QB.

I do understand the "sarcasm" in the OP and in regards to the "high school offense" I do not believe that I am that far off as you may think. I call it that because it is the same type of an offense that we ran in high school as did most of our opponents. Sadly, it is still being ran in a majority of SWPA football programs to this day. Most of the high school coaches run the ball a majority of the time because in their opinion, they do not have a QB talented enough to throw the ball downfield.
Now, I do not know how cignetti feels about his QB/WR?TE's, but he does seem to enjoy running the ball more then throwing it down the field. Only in the last couple of games have they even tried to do so. I know when I was in high school and we'd be playing other schools, it was run the ball...CONSTANTLY. It didn't matter the down, the distance needed to get the next 1st down, it didn't matter, we RAN the ball.
All I ask is that the Pitt football team run an offense that looks like it fits into the style that the top college football programs are running today. You could bring a star QB in here like USC QB Caleb Williams and he will not look any where the QB we all see when we watch USC play on tv.

Not that different than Cavanaugh. Conservative and doesn't want to open things up. Boring to watch and slow QB development if any.

Damn. Hearing this Jurk to pitt thing is a done deal. That was quick.

Anyone hearing the same?

I am on the opposite end of this. I for one don't want him. Pitt wasn't good enough for him coming out of high school, now he finally see's the light and want's to come back?
Nope

He’s on his way

Even dating back to 2017 when it was clear that DiNucci (or Pickett) should’ve been played ahead of Max Browne a lot sooner than he did. Heck, I think the only real QB competition we’ve had since he came here was Voytik vs Peterman in 2015.
You mean when Browne was benched in the third game of the season? Thenge benched Dinucci later on.

Correct. I thought DiNucci should’ve started from day one and, IMO, it seemed like Narduzzi gave Browne a longer leash than he should’ve, although that was before Pickett’s red shirt was burnt.

Pitt also doesn't have anywhere near the skill position talent that USC does. The talent gap is huge.

I'm sure Pitt would like to throw the ball downfield a lot more than they have this year. Every OC has to adjust their playcalling to what the offense can actually execute. And fwiw, I'm sure the offense would look vastly different in terms of play calling if Pitt had a Caleb Williams at QB.

What do you mean when you say that you want Pitt to run an offense that looks like it fits into the style that top college football programs run today? There is a vast difference between styles in what many of the top programs run. The reason they are top programs is because they have superior talent.
The difference really isn't as large as what you'd think among the top programs. They go out and put up points. I hope that you are watching the USC - Utah game tonight. I so not like Lincoln Riley, but I will give him credit for going out and trying to win their biggest game of the year. 4th and 1 or 2, in his own half of the field or down by the end zone, they go for it. The entire first quarter, they have taken the game to Utah. If this USC team was to lay Pitt, they'd beat them easily. Much more dynamic and exciting compared to cignetti's high school offense.

He should have committed to Pitt out of high school, not after he failed as a starting QB at two other schools. Hope he stays away.

Did he win 8 games this year or did he keep us from 10 wins
I find it hilarious that you or any one else could think it was the QB's fault. Slovis had a high school offense to run with little to no pass blocking from his OL and an offense that seemed to forget about the TE and using the middle of the field. Trust me, if I thought it was his fault, I'd be all over Slovis as well.

Well trade rosters offensively and suddenly Cignetti's offense would be far superior.

I think the disaster of that season is why he wouldn’t lift Slovis at any point, no matter how bad, this season. Resulting in at least the GT loss and possibly Louisville and UNC due to the common knowledge that the offense was impotent to come back after falling behind. That was a lot of unfair pressure to put on the defense. And that’s sad, because the seasons and players were different. Our backups this season were not as awful as Da Nooch.
