Justin Champagnie

Justin reminds me so much of Grant Hill, he even has the smile. I wonder if he talks as much shit as Grant did to get in your head. Grant was one of the best, I am impressed with the coolness that Justin has displayed as a freshman. Great things coming!
He is fluid and bouncy -
Just needs to get stronger so he’s not pushed around on defense

He has slow feet defensively but that will improve. Silky smooth offensive game. So confident in his jump shot. Loved those clutch free throws to seal it. Both one and ones and he goes 4/4.

he sure does have a smooth release & buried those FTs like it was no big deal

Early in the season, there were 2 or 3 games in a row where Justin was cleverly antagonizing a player on the other team. IIRC he got a Seminole t'd up over it and the replay showed Justin doing 90% of the talking. Love to see it.

As you know the transition to work college basketball is very difficult when you are used to having your way in high school were offense is everything. Your right, I was impressed with his tough rebounding and that energy will soon convert to defense because Coach Capel will not have it any other way.

The last rebound he had was incredible. He jumped so hi and aggressively attacked the ball at his highest point. It was a thing of beauty.
He also has great anticipation.
He just is one of those guys that the game seems to be slower for him.

He struggled on defense today for sure. I think he might be strong enough but needs to learn to be more confident to be more physical.

Yep! I thought the exact same thing watching him soar for that board..very impressive play and probably the most important rebound of the game.. then calmly sinks 2 clutch FT immediately after...love this kid

I'd like to again eat crow after thinking he was a reach watching one bad HS game.
Yeah....I am not sure I didn't think much of him, but I didn't see an impact player as a Freshman for sure. He is really good, really talented and probably underrated coming into college.

I think defense is more coachable than offense. So really looking forward to his development.
I agree. Playing great defense is utilizing sound fundamental techniques and combining those with a great desire to impose your will on your opponent by preventing him to do what he wants to do on the court, thus taking him out of his game. The timing of the opposing team's offense then becomes disrupted by solid individual defense, which results in turnovers, poor shot selection and a breakdown of confidence.

Playing offense requires a more specialized skill and ability in order to score the basket.

Yea but he's really a "3 and a half" having to guard 2 of the better post players in the league."

If you mean rebounding - I agree
He was bad defensively . Didn’t give up much resistance

He's not quick enough to slide out and guard the deep ball right now. That's one of the biggest reasons why we seem to give up "career 3p shooting" nights so frequently.

But overall, he's been a revelation, especially as a freshman. Love his positioning under the basket. Love his above the rim ability. Love his FT% (82%!!!!). Rebounding has been sufficient.

If he gets just a little quicker he will be an all conference player. I can't believe he's able to do what he's doing so quickly. My hat is off to him.

I truly believe the young guys, and most of them are, are afraid to get in foul trouble. They don’t understand defense yet, how physical you can and need to be. They don’t want to be on the bench with fouls.

New Justin reminds me so much of Grant Hill,
Sorry....he's talented but I'm not seeing Grant Hill ball handling skills as yet.

Prime Grant Hill was an incredible talent.

So far, he's been reminding me of Chevy Troutman, but may be better.

Champagnie is a nice player.

Grant Hill was an all-world, all-around talent and the best athlete on the court in every college game he played in. He was also easily one of the best and most talented players in the NBA when he was 100% healthy, which wasn’t often.

I have to assume you’re not saying they are comparable from a talent/skill standpoint at the same level of their development.

I agree ... at the least, this would be a very big part of it.

He is Chevy in body type and the rebounding realm. He clearly is no Chevy when it comes to his shot. His form and range make him a Ferrari when compared to Chevon Troutman. That said, Chevy was a much better defender, but, Penny has plenty of time to get there.
