1 - Femi, Jeffress and Max have not transferred (yet)

2 - Recruiting seems to be going fairly well. Lots of contacts and a number sound somewhat promising.

Gary you really are probably the biggest diehard basketball fan on here. I know you wanted capel fired big time (like me). But since the decision to keep him you have been locked in.

I seriously give you a lot of credit because I have checked out from pitt basketball a good bit due to capel. Kudos to you man.

Based on what? And no snark whatsoever. They’ve been active it seems in contacting kids but anyone can contact anyone. As I said the other day I don’t follow it that closely so what leads you to say it’s going well?

Think there are real chances with several players:

Cummings, Brown, Alston, Njie, Quinn, Freeman

Funk, Roche

Possibly Thiero, Batchelor, the Spanish kids

Possibly Bridges, McNeil, Curbelo,C.Moore

Need to get that first one, hopefully a big time one and see how the rest fall into place. I know we are all hopeful Capel can make some magic happen.

Hope you’re correct on your No. 2, gary, but unfortunately Coach and Pitt’s chances seem to peter-out after getting into the final three or so…

Go Pitt.

Not suggesting that another one won't leave but that Soph class is tight. If every class felt the same - Capel wouldn't be in this mess.

I'm surprised also. I think Max is on the Samson George free tuition for practicing plan. I think Jeffress and his dad really believe in Capel and Capel must see something in him. Femi, still think he will transfer but dont know why he hasnt done so

It seemed like halfway through the season it became a forgone conclusion that Femi would leave. Why was that? Was there a comment that I missed? And I realize it may still happen.

BballinsiderfromPitt was guaranteeing he was gone. That was it. But honestly, I would have predicted it too just because he fits the exact profile a kid who would use a free transfer being he was on a losing team.

Kudos to @gary2 I very much appreciate all the posts regarding new recruits. We just need to hit on a couple of them. We all want so badly for Pitt and Capel to turn it around. Definitely expected A LOT more in 4 years, but here we are. Please surprise us Capel, it's about damn time.

He’s playing major minutes , unless he goes down a few notches he won’t be playing that much anywhere else.

Doesn't matter unless they close. I hope they do, but I have no confidence in these guys suddenly getting it done.

Regarding Jeffress, he is a top notch student so perhaps he just really likes going to school at Pitt and will stay no matter what until he gets his degree.

A recruit is most likely figuring playing time #1, good league, star player in Hugley and the fact that Capel will most likely be around a few years if he can't get fired after a year like he had this year.

I thought they had very good chances with West, Bickerstaff and Soriano last season. ( Not great players, but helpful)

They landed none of the three.

Know where you are coming from.

And oddly enough that’s why I asked. It’s in no way anything against your optimism. It’s 100% that I don’t have a whole lot of faith Capel is going to elevate his recruiting nearly enough. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I hope I’m wrong and if so anyone can feel free to point it out and rub my nose in it.

Femi is playing out of position.

If, two capable point guards are added Femi can be moved to 3 and create a tough match up.
3 man needs to be able to shoot. You want the 2 and 3 to be strong perimeter shooters. Those are the scoring positions.

Ideally you want Femi to be a 20 minute a game defensive specialist/fast break scoring guy. Like a 7th/8th man or so.

Yeah, regardless of position, I expected him to be better last season.

His defense is terrible!!

His defense is terrible!!
The entire team’s is. I doubt that’s because they’re not capable of being relatively solid defensively even with the subpar personnel. Femi’s long and athletic enough to be a good perimeter defender. Strong tenacious defense is the best way for an outmatched team to compete.

I don’t think teaching defense is a point of emphasis of Capel’s.

I think the biggest problem defensively is that they stop.
They stop giving full focus
They stopped going all out on every play.
The great defensive teams never lose focus.
But this, so far, is a hallmark of Capel.
He can't keep players engaged enough for a full game or full year consistently

I agree. Sometimes teams are bad not because their bad players are so bad, but because their good players are not so good.

I wouldn't be surprised what he does, stay or go. I have no idea if he wants to play a lot and try to improve this team, or be a role player on a good team.

How would Femi create a tough matchup? OK on defense, not consistent with the ball. ACC wings are pretty good all around. I think he's a sub on a solid team.

Defense is about technique, which is taught, and desire, which the player either has or is motivated to have. We don't have coaches who are capable of teaching or motivating. That's the reason that no matter who we get in the portal or anywhere, we will continue to be mediocre at best, winning maybe 10 or 12 games total every year until this head coach and his staff are gone.
