Last place two years running...

2 to 4 wins in ACC was predicted (before the start of the season) by just about everyone on this board except maybe a few outliers.
Going 2-2 really changed - fairly or not- the expectations. Losing out seemed unfathomable.

Not that it really matters- but beating ND would be nice. 3 conference wins after last year would show a little progress and would avoid an almost unbelievable losing streak.

I really hope there are at least 5 more new players in addition Couliby and Drumgoole coming in. We so desperately need an influx of at least serviceable ACC talent.

Amazing and sad how quickly the fanbase has turned on capel.

No one outside of the lunatic fringe has turned on him. This year was always going to be a throwaway and, barring a serious infusion of JuCo/Grad talent, next year won’t be a lot better. This is likely a 4 year rebuild before we’re back to a tournament level. The only option is to be patient and let this run it’s course

There is an established precedent.

BC went from 4-14 to 0-18 to 2-16 to 7-11.

Pitt went from 4-14 to 0-18 and is currently 2-15.

BC, of course, did it with the same coach and is currently just 5-11 three years removed from going 0-18 in the ACC.

Who has turned into on him?

It’s factual we lost every road game
It’s factual we are on a huge losing streak
It is also factual that we have played worse as the season has progressed,
Play badly in end of game situations when we have a chance.

Nobody is saying fire him.

But we better recruit a bunch more players because the group we have for next year won’t win much more games.

Very true, 2-4 wins was expected and a last place finish. But like a poster stated above, being 2-2 changed expectations and what us Pitt fans thought the season could be. I was never in the boat of a possible NCAA tournament birth looking at their schedule (hardest 1st half/easiest 2nd half schedule), but maybe an NIT berth was under discussion.

We just thought of WF, BC, GT, Miami and now ND, we'd get 3 of them or something. I believe next year's ACC schedule has the "easier" team at home, which is better than away obviously.

Let's REALLY hope that Capel and staff can pull a few more ACC caliber players over the next few months. JWF will be a huge loss, more than people think. Maybe Drumgoole is a great shooter, but he's young and inexperienced. Hoping for a couple surprises in recruiting too.

To get into the ACC 4-7 win window next season (with 20 vs 18 ACC games) the key, IMHO, is Capel finding at least one more big man (one who will be better than Chukwuka and Brown) --probably a JUCO or Grad transfer--and at least one JUCO or grad transfer shooter at the level of Wilson-Frame.

Given how Capel was able to get S. N'dir, X. Johnson and T. MacGowens with such a late start last year, I am expecting he will do at least that well in finishing this recruiting class. So, it is not too late. But, we shall see where we are with that by May, or so.

and counting....

It really is crazy that Stallings Year 1 returned Young, Artis, Jeter, Jones, Luther, Cam Johnson (who people are parading as a potential all-American on UNC now) and won only 2 more conference games than this team of JWF and some freshmen who should still be in HS.

Again, when you looked at this ACC schedule I thought to myself two things.

1) Damn it is front loaded which could really drain a lot mentally and physically from these guys. And it likely has. It is obvious we hit a huge wall.

2) It is a shame to get both UNC and Duke at home, because we weren't going to beat them, and have some of the more "winneable" games like BC, Wake, GT and Miami on the road. So, likely this took 2 additional wins off of us.

And actually a 3rd, with where Pitt is as a program right now, one of their home/homes should have been against one of those aforementioned teams.

Shouldn't they at least a little? The coaching at times has left a lot to be desired, nobody has shown any improvement as we close out the season and in fact a few have flat out regressed. Add to that his coaching staff are a bunch of former coaches nobody wants and the recruiting for next season hasn't been very good. And with JWF and N'dir gone we could be looking at a worse year next season.

I would be more comfortable with that if we had more than 2 commits
It was predicted we would get the twins or Timberlake in 2 weeks. If that happens good. That would be 3 or 4 recruits in the bag. You need to hold 2 out for grad transfers, decommits , late qualifiers, etc.

Would not go that far, but as you point out, there are concerns.

I am not sure if it is preferable to get the twins or land two more grand transfers to help try to just win an extra game next year. We need to land recruits to develop over four years but we also can't have a roster locked up with too many marginal ACC players.

Which is to say, it's a mess. Thankfully I still believe we have a good recruiter.

It is critical for next year's team that HCJC holds back 1, if not 2, scholarships for the grad transfer market to bolster the inside game with game ready, experienced players.

Pitt's interior defense is so weak and that is having a ripple effect on the entire defense.

The worst case would be for the three freshmen to begin to suspect Capel does not know what he is doing and begin to think they may have made a mistake in joining him at Pitt.

They may think they made a mistake coming to Pitt, but it won't be because they think that Capel doesn't know what he is doing.

Regardless of why they might come to that conclusion, if they would, it would make this season worse than a wasted season.

Freshmen who are season-long starters think their coach is a really smart guy. It's the young guys on the bench who think the coach is blind.

Thanks for providing a most pessimistic prediction. Now if anything less pessimistic actually results we can all be happy it wasn't so bad afterall.

True dat. But after beating FSU & the Ville....talk of NIT/bubble team/winning record was pretty hot.
Unreasonable expectations guarantee disappointment.
