Late Pitt vs. Wake Game Thread

Vegas always finds a way. But I’ll take the Q2 win over a top half ACC team and move on. They now have wins over 5 of the other 7 teams in the top half of the ACC. Both looked like tourney teams at times. NW with a solid road win and WVU with a road W tonight.

I feel the same. Like I said, if 3 point shooting and the matador defense are our recipe for the stretch run, don't expect an at large bid on selection Sunday. If we defend the way we did tonight, we will finish at 10-10. It was completely unacceptable.
There's even more to
worry about. Burton
leaves inured, and
Cummings singlehandely
allows WF back in the
game. No clue on shot
clock at end? We had
to rely on missed FT's.
Oh, one other thing
we had way too much
trouble with WF's 1-3-1.

Pretty apparent Nelly should not be in the game down the stretch.
True, and before that
when we had the double
digit lead Burton had
to leave injured for a
while. That's when we
went scoreless while
WF cut the lead. Burton
returned and stopped
the bleeding, but by that
time WF was back in it,
and had the momentum.

Was this the first time Pitt had seen a 1-3-1 this year? WF looked both good AND bad in that set, but it did take Pitt awhile to adjust to it.
Basic offense against it
is a two man front. They
actually pressed out front
with the point and the
wing. We struggled with
that instead of taking
advantage of it.

The two bigs are skinny
and weak. ACC bigs can
easily back them down.
They're just not strong
enough to hold their
defensive position down
low.
They’re not 5’s , that’s why losing Big John really hurts .

The twins aren't, but I
feel Frederico is a 5. He
also can't hold a defensive
position down low. He'd
be a sub if Big John were
playing. He's actually not
all that bad considering
how skinny, and weak he
is. He'll get stronger in
the offseason hopefully.

‘We had way too much trouble with WF’s 1-3-1.’

Even adding the ‘way too much’, it’s still an understatement.

The twins and Fede need to hit the weight room in the transition between this and next year. Height cannot be taught; building muscle and toughness can
The twins really need to be stronger to play anywhere , but they’re not 5’s . Fede needs to catch the ball better and develop some moves .

Pitt needs a healthy John Hugley .

Not perfect but a good win. Wake kept getting up off the floor and hit some preposterous shots to raise from the seeming dead time and again. Recent Pitt teams would have wilted. But they found a way.

True. Unfortunately for
them, and fortunately
for us, they missed some
key FT's at the end which
as much as anything cost
them the game.

I saw the stats. 11-18 from the charity stripe. Seems uncharacteristic but WF used a lot of energy in the game and got banged up some. Tired legs at the end? The guy who missed both in the double bonus toward the end was key

We really need our guys to curtail the alley-oop hot dogging plays that they’ve been F’ing up Over and over as of late. Fine and great when they make even now and then, but infuriating when so many are thrown away foolishly like was happening in the second half

Very lucky for the win tonight. Our defense was lazy and played with their hands down around their knees and their feet in concrete. If we hadn't made so many 3's, we would have lost by double digits. All of Hinson's buckets were 3's. That's just not a good sign. And why can't we play against a 1 - 3 - 1??? Was that even coached? It didn't look like it.

All of that said, I'm glad we won but wary of our next couple of games. We need every win we can get or even an NIT bid may not be attainable. If we can win one of the next 2, that will be a very good sign we're back on track for a possible NCAAT bid.

Silly…

Imagine if any point in the last 5 years someone told us that we will have a transfer that pours in 24 during a win that likely gets us back on the good side of the bubble going into February, And this is what we think of?
I sure am happy his 3-ball showed up tonight. But , while I won’t call him or his performance lazy, I do think he’s turned into about as one-dimensional of a player as it gets, particularly for his size. His offense is entirely the 3.

On defense, I think he hustles and puts in the effort. The complete lack of box out on the missed FT was pretty bad though.

I remember when we were praying for a 4 who could consistently score from behind the arc. Hinson isn't perfect by any means; nor are any of Pitt's players. But when the ball has energy points will be scored. All too recently neither the energy nor the shots were positive

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we have him. Just saying that he’s getting more one-dimensional each game. That one dimension was pretty darn good today though.

Cummings drives me crazy and I’m glad capel put Nike in more at the end of the game. One out of bounds play where it was a give and get back shoot three and a miss. Why not put Elliot or Hinson as the inbounder? Much better chance of making the three. Then the next time down the court Cummings took another three and missed. It’s this type of sequence where cumming kills the team.

We got lucky on the
WF rebound on the
missed WF free throw.
Hinson did NOT block
out....on a FT no less!
That’s where the extra two bodies can be used for defensive replacements. Mix and match given game situations. You know, the two who are out for the year.

I was making fun of the poster calling him a lazy player
