I feel that this home opener has at least as much hype since Wannys first game against Notre Dame on national TV. We ended up getting blown out in the game.

Being a Pitt fan I have a nagging sense we get the rug pulled out from us and end up 0-2 with two blow outs to start the season and knocked out of the top 25 for good the rest of the year. Afraid our new OC and QB combo are going to take some time to figure things out. We had a magical season last year and really amped up expectations for this year. What would have been our record last year if we had junior season Kenny Pickett versus senior KP, maybe 8-4?

This board will become insufferable with nitters and hoopies in the coming weeks if that happens.

I hope I'm wrong but as we get closer to the season I get more worried we are closer to a 7-5, 8-4 team this year and not in the top 25.

Hope the magic carries over from last year and we aren't the "same ole Pitt". Hope the 4th Quarter of the Peach Bowl wasn't the turning point back to reality of a lifelong Pitt fan.

I'll be rooting hard next Thursday for our Panthers but just wanted to verbalize what I'm guessing a lot of us have in the back of their minds heading into the season.

Wake Up! You are dreaming! Our D will impose their will on WV.

Our Talent Level, Depth, and Overall Experience is so much greater this year compared to that team. ND was a lot more talented and more experienced than us. We might go 8-4, but this year’s team is completely different from the team that played ND.

That 2005 team didnt even belong on the same field as the notre dame team. How embarrassing the loss was, it could have easily been much worse.

we were all fooled coming off a fiesta bowl appearance with how truly bad that roster was. If we lose next week, it will be a big upset and it will be on the coaching staff. unfortunately i feel like the following week, we arent the most talented team and if we win, that will be an upset too.

Alot of us are not thinking what you are.
What if we had jr season Kenny last season ?? unreal
You could have thousands of scenarios for every team every season.
Pitt won 11 games , deal with it.
Let the players play this season, dont be so scared.

8-4 is about as disappointing as I could possibly see this season going.

I categorize the games like this:

No way in hell we're losing to:

Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island, Western Michigan, Duke

We should win without much problem against:

West Virginia, Virginia Tech

Decently tough road games that could go either way at this point:

Louisville, Virginia, UNC

Difficult games:

Tennessee, Miami

To go 7-5 would involve either some really disappointing losses or losing just about every game we're not at least a touchdown favorite in. Hard to imagine the law of averages shaking out that way.

That team didn't have a defensive line. We lost Vince Crochunis and Dan Stevens from the previous year. They were more than solid. 2005 defense was attrocious.

A lot of Pitt fans feel this way. The Pitt administration has conditioned us, like Pavlov’s dog, to expect mediocrity as the norm.
I hope that that condition has changed. But until we have proof, some of us must go on hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.
As a glass half full guy, I am hoping for the best, but hope is all I can muster until Pitt Football proves otherwise.

i think we over react after every loss. lets face it, we will lose a few times this year, that's what happens in sports. your team sometimes loses. It's better that we prepare for this and not scream for narduzzi's head if and when this happens..

I wouldn't even say 2005 was the biggest letdown home opener. How about 2008 Bowling Green, or I'd say 2012 YSU takes the cake.

Utah 2010 wasn't a home opener, but it was a Thursday night before Labor Day opening game letdown when we were highly ranked. We were breaking in a new QB in that one, and we were on the road at Utah who was ranked in the top 25, plus it went to OT, so on paper it doesn't look like a bad loss. But the opening loss was bad omen for the rest of 2010.

As far as having expectations and not meeting them goes, hard to top 2003. Top 10 preseason... lose to Toledo.

Pitt could start 0-2 and still win the Coastal and the ACC. Lots to play for even if we do start 0-2.

You need “sly” somewhere in your name. Like a cattle brand you can’t get rid of, after that post.

I guess last year was a mirage then.

Yeah. 7-5 or 8-4 would basically mean losing every 50-50 game (for which there aren’t many) and being upset in a couple of lean Pitt games. The schedule just isn’t difficult enough for that.

Someday soon, I hope that when someone uses the word "Pitting", they are referring to posts like the OP and not some revolting development such as what the OP is describing.

For the record, my gut is telling me this team is legit and we're in for a great year. Pitt 52 WVU 20, followed by Pitt 34 Tenn 27, followed by a rush to the bandwagon.

As much as I want to, I just don't see a 2-0 start. First, historically our record against P5 OOC is bad. And to open with two P5 is not good, although the saving grace is both are at home.

A 1-1 start wouldn't be a total disaster but would put us on the cusp of the Top 25. Need to then win next 3 (should be doable) with WMU, RI and Georgia Tech. Then I think we would be firmly in the top 15-20.

I can see starting 5-1 which would be very good. But watch we win the first two and then lose to WMU again. 6-0 is very doable, just don't see it happening.

The Florida State opener as the inaugural ACC game was more deflating. Their freaking QB didn’t have one incompletion (at least not until the game was long since safely decided). THAT was painful.
Think he finished with 2. one was an interception and the other one was a reception but the WR was out of bounds (Barely).

I'll agree with that, but Toledo wasn't the opener at least.
That was a long drive home from Toledo though. personally my worst in person Pitt experience, that or the last game vs Miami in the frigid cold, over thanksgiving break.

I think if I had to bet on it I would predict 1-1 after the first two as well. But I think that's okay, and a good season would still be there for the taking. I'm predicting 9-3. If I had to bet on the losses, they would be Tennessee, Miami, and one of the three games against Louisville, UNC, or Virginia. But I think going through the individuals games is usually an exercise in futility, because there's so much it doesn't take into account. Like, if we lose at Louisville we might throttle UNC the next week. If we beat Louisville and are 6-1 heading to UNC, maybe be let our guard down.

That's why I just put them in general categories. And even that will be wrong most of the time (e.g. lose to WMU, beat Clemson).

9-3 with another trip to charlotte would be an excellent season. Yeah that Louisville-UNC stretch is concerning. So 2-2 out of those two games plus the openers, and of course the loss to Miami would make for 9-3 But as you said once the games are played all bets are off. Could very well beat all four of those, and lose to Virginia & WMU. I think I saw somewhere Salopek is starting. It would fit into the annals of history to have a huge game in victory against the home town team that didn't recruit him.

The Miami game was a killer. Even though Larry should have won it, a big game would have iced the Heisman

Cliff Note: Still in the 1990's.

I really believe all signs point to a huge season.

If we play clean football (no huge mistakes), I truly believe we handle both WVU (easily) and TN. If we make a few mistakes, I still think we have enough to beat the hoopies. If we make mistakes against TN we’re gonna have a bad day, unless TN makes even more mistakes.

I’m quite bullish on this team: talented, deep, the best group of coaches we’ve had since the glory days, and a student section that really came alive last year. The pieces are all in place.

Honestly, we take down the interesting discussion thread on politics then give into paranoia in this one?

Then again, I understand where he is coming from.

We all need to be a lot more confident in the program. Another ACC winner will lift recruiting...I hope.
