Linebackers

Story from the PG. So far our reformed nitter beat writer seems to be pretty good.

Thoughts on Campbell at LB? Hope it isn't deja vu all over again when Wanny made a former DB named Campbell a LB and he was totally out of position.

Tommie Campbell’s problems at Pitt had nothing to do with a position change. There’s no doubt he would have been an impact player at whatever position he was put at if he had had his head on straight.

There’s always a place for a 6’3, 220# guy who runs a 4.3 40.

I’m at least encouraged that most of our LB’s were HS LB’s and a few (Reynolds and Pine) are thumpers. I liked what we saw from Bright last season and expect big strides in 2019. If Campbell is as aggressive as they say and is an effective coverage player and tackler, do it.

I’m most curious about the grad transfer from Florida. Is he a player or just a guy taking reps. I would put most of our defensive grad transfers in the later catagory.

Chris said he was backing up pine at money backer. Curious cause I thought he’d be competing with bright for the star position.

With brightwell at middle, I don’t think there is much behind pine for backups at money backer.

I thought Bright was pushing Campbell. FWIW, I hate our LB terminology “Star, Middle & Money.” Money equals strong and Star equals Will, I guess I just don’t get the underlying purpose. It just makes it harder to remember who’s in why role. What’s achieved vs Sam, Mike, Will or Strong, Middle & Jack or Bandit?

I thought I was the only one who didn't like the terminology.

The way I learned them was that "money" is in short supply for college kids, so money is the short side LB.

Have to see Campbell in action to answer you question. We seem to always put "athletes" in the LB role and hope for the best. LB is being instinctive with leverage and a willingness to stick your face in the chest of the person with the ball. We shall see

One of the previous PITT guys who fits the put an athlete in the LB role and hope for the best was Anthony Gonzalez. He played in our area in the same conference where our kids played. He was a really good two way player QB and safety and went to PITT to play QB.

We ran into him at a local restaurant. Mrs Buffett had her PITT cowgirl hat on and he had a PITT jacket on so we got to talking. He told us, I think it was Wanny, said to him you can play now at LB or wait and play QB or maybe safety.
Anthony said I'll play now. He also went on to say if he had had some more experience at LB he thought he would have been alot better since it was "on the job" training! Plus he would have had some time to bulk for the position since he was trying to stay in QB or maybe even Safety condition.

Nice kid by the way!

I thought money was strong side and Star was weak but I could be wrong. Not sure if they do a boundary or field thing with olbs like they do with safeties but again, I could be wrong.

Former Nebraska HC Bob Devaney was known to recruit Safeties and move them to LB’s and was very successful. TV commentators would make it a point to bring it to the attention of the viewers and that was decades ago, back in the 1960’s. Even more so today a/c spread and passing Off. quickness and speed at LB’s is needed and perhaps some coaches feel that a Safety can provide that extra step or two.

See, how much Pitt football do we watch? Who’s paying more attention than the psycho’s on this board and even we don’t know which is what. Seriously, if anyone w/ coaching or playing insight can enlighten us, what’s the significance of this terminology?

Star is the field side LB and money is the boundary side. The star backer has to cover the most ground and the faster slot players.

Probably to make it sound more complex than football should be.

Given the typical results, they should come up with some new arbitrary arcane terminology. This one ain't doing much.

Maybe, just maybe, outside linebacker and middle linebacker...
Except, Pitt uses three. So, who's on the strong side, and who's on the weak side.

Or, is it short side, and wide side; or is it Field and Boundary.

Now, I'm confused....:)

Due to the vast array of offensive formations utilizing single backs, less if any TEs and more wide receivers, as well as the emphasis on zone blocking and the short pass as a replacement for power run game, the terms strong and weak side are a bit outdated for LBs in a 4-3 that have a wider variety of gaps to control and receivers to cover.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

That what PITT plans to do with this LB control a gap and hopefully it doesn't move 2 ft either way???????????????????????

I hope upon the season end I can look back and say, "wow, our linebackers really surprised me in how good they were." But as it stands today I would be greatly surprised by that. I think it's going to be more "this is the best we could do at these positions?" as it has been for too many years now. I really hope to be wrong though. Moving Campbell there and the seeming randomness of where they're planning to use Pine and Brightwell (didn't they play opposite positions previously?)makes the LB appear to be afterthoughts... again.

Pitt's LB terminology is different because their LB scheme is slightly different from the standard 4-3 LB deployment of Strong-Middle-Weak.

In the old school system, the Strong LB lines up on the same side of the TE (regardless of which side of the field that is) or the side with the most personnel. The Weak LB lines up on the opposite side.

In Pitt's system, the Star LB plays the field side and the Money plays the boundary side. This is true regardless of how the offensive personnel line up.
