Seemed like they were playing better as the year went out. Probably should have give him another year. Like you said, not a great year to find a coach with all these openings. No one will slip through the cracks.
This is why the dummy from Toledo shouldn't have jumped at the first offer. A place like Virginia is somewhere a young coach can succeed. Iowa State is not.
He took the ISU job? What? Its IMPOSSIBLE to win there. What a bad move.
I follow this Program due to close friend I worked with in Washington in the 1990s. They are like Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Stanford that do not accept just any recruits or coaches.
I talked to UVA AD Craig Litltepage when he came to Washington at an Alumni Gathering they have every year with my friend that contributes big bucks.
London had one of the toughest OOC Schedules to play all 5 years and just missed winning 6 games almost very year. He went to one Bowl Game. Yet, his Recruiting was often in the Top 40 and 30! UVA took enough top recruits from Virginia Hampton Roads Great Recruiting Football High Schools to hurt Beamer's VT Program, in my opinion.
The real Gem to pick up is Assistant Coach Chip West that does much of the recruiting. Even Franklin tried to poach him from London's Staff. I would not be surprised if Franklin does not go after him too, if he shakes up his Coaching?
I have not read anything yet and my friend is in New York City but he will get the lowdown. We talked how Temple's Rhule would be a perfect choice since George Welsh a Former PSU Guy coached there for decades until he retired and with a pretty much 6 to 9 wins seasons.
I also think Golden could return there! He was DC under Al Groh there before he went to Temple!
Chip West is the guy to get to recruit better in Virginia and they have signed Top Ten Ranked recruits on ESPN Top 100 Lists!
They have a situation there with the AD playing power games with the football coaches, according to a starter's brother. He doesn't let the head coach pick his own assistants either and meddles with everything. Don't expect it to get better down there. Sounds like the AD has the chancellor's loyalty.
When I went to the UVA Alumni Event, Littlepage was standing all alone with no one coming near him to talk to him, so I approached him with my friend and he talked all about how he handles things, but was cautious and guarded in his words and eyes. He is big on Title IX and Women Sports too as is the Chancellor! He has a Coach like Jamie Dixon in Tony Bennett teaches Defense. Picking a new Football Coach is a tough job for him now, and he did give London every chance to get the team better.
