Rahmani comes back from 3-1 deficit to win 7-4. Late reversal , TD and 2 BP. 15-3. Va Tech

Wentzel walks straight into two take downs from Jr World Champ McKai Lewis. Standing too upright. Easy shots and Jake tries to muscle out of the TD but can’t do it. Jake loses 5-3. Got a good deep shot with 40’secons left had kids leg high in the air and could not get him to ground to tie match. Kid jumped around last 35 sec. on one leg. 18-3 VT

Nino no TD. 0-0 after one. Zavatsky rides out Nino in sec. Nino chooses neutral For third. No TD in third. Zavatsky wins 2-0 with R time. 24-3 VT

Meech wins 11-7. Four take downs. A few sloppy TDs against. By far the most aggressive Panther if the night. Final 27-6. Lots of close matches. But yikes.

Bad loss. Some matches were close. But, I thought the only Panther who wrestled really well was Meech. After Fenton only lost 5-1, I thought things might go well. I think Micky losing — and, to be honest, losing soundly — was emotionally deflating and that carried through to pretty much every match. Their ranked kids did what they were supposed to do and their unranked kids won 3 matches. This was a bad beating, and the score was very unexpected.

Thanks Mike. Spot on. We are always going to have to rely on the heavier weights. 125, 141 and 149 are always going to be an issue this season against better teams. To me Jake looks like someone who was able to be successful in HS relying on strength, but in college most wrestlers are close to being equally strong and he has not evolved to a more sophisticated style. Nino was aggressive, but Zavatsky looked so much bigger than Nino to me. With the exception of Meech Tech got all the important TDs and were superior in all facets.

Thanks again for your informative comments. Hope you don’t get taken to the woodshed for Misspelled names like last week

Their unranked guys won by forfeit and beat us at 125 and 149 where we haven’t been very good. Other than Micky nothing about last night was surprising. They’re better than we our right now, but we’re going to keep getting better.

I don't think either team wrestled well but what we saw was the difference between being good and being an All-American. If I had to generalize, I would say the difference in technique and experience was the margin. Pitt was not blown out by better athletes - and that's the good news. Even Wentzel was in the match against an exceptional athlete (until he gave up the escape to fast and didn't get a chance to work from the top)

Maybe Micky losing did have an effect on the team (even Samat got teched at the Schultz - LOL) but that would really show a lot of immaturity and I don't really believe that.

My humble opinion is that the Pitts guys need to understand why world champions wrestle the way world champions wrestle. A championship wrestler will maintain mental focus and fundamentals...even on a bad day...throughout the whole match. That's what makes it hard to score on them. Its hard to outscore the mistakes you make.

At the bottom half of the top 20, Pitts athletes were on average better and when ability was close, Pitt was more aggressive. That enthusiasm and aggressiveness seemed to make the difference and they won all the close points. As Pitt starts going against the top 10 teams (and athletes) they are losing the close matches because of small, but important mistakes and are not able to over come these mistakes by athletic ability or aggression.

Some guys make the mistakes because they are young, inexperienced and learning, some because self doubt creeps in, others because they are mentally lazy and will not give up bad habits.

The next few matches in particular, are all part of the process to becoming the best wrestler one can become...and hopefully to the NCAA championships. I'm curious to see what Gavin and Co can do with these guys over the next few weeks.

The guys response to this loss will tell if this was a bad loss or not.

Oh...another thing...

Our 285 pounder hit a standing granby - LOL!!!!

The guy thinks he is 158 instead of 285!!

Freight train double legs, ankle picks, and grinds the whole match. I love watching those heavy guys get so tired they quite - right there in front of their mom...and they are so tired they don't care.

What a pleasure to watch.

Meech and Steveson are extremely athletic.
