Malaki Branham - offer

Rivals they're calling him a SF but 247 sports calls him a SG. Capel actually had a virtual tour with him today then he offered him.

From what I watched- His game highlights looks more like early Toney than a 2 guard. He did most of his damage at the rim.

Malaki is an incredible kid who is cousins with the Branham boys who were recruited early by the Panther football team. He has a ton of untapped potential as people I talk to think Dru hasn’t done the best job with him. Extremely long arms and super athlete.

Originally from Columbus, I would be shocked if he’s not gonna take the OSU offer. But you never know.

I would be shocked if Steve Pikiell didn't get him.

Interesting that he's going after another wing for next year.

On the surface, this doesn't seem to make sense given the roster makeup heading into 21/22. We need a big and a PG. But I guess you just never stop recruiting.

That said, did anyone catch Corey Evans' interview yesterday? He said
Jalen Hood-Schifino could reclassify to '21. That would take up our one definite schollie for next year. Kid looks special.

Yeah he does but its so hard to pin down these tweeners in high school because they do whatever there team needs. So what I do maybe because I played PG I look to see if they can handle the rock and can they create and go get there own shot.

Also, you can’t know who will transfer out, who may leave early for the NBA or for pro ball overseas, what effects changes in the way the NBA does G league business will have, so you just keep on recruiting.

I think the only issue with JHS coming to Pitt is that he probably won’t be here that long !

Whatever happened to the big RB Branham who was on our radar a couple years back. I really liked his tape.

I am definitely looking for Schifino to reclass. If he has the necessary schoolwork he has nothing to gain with another year in high school. He would be a plus whether X stays another year or leaves for a Pro league.

I still gets chills watching that clip! Ah, the days of yore.

Making an offer to 4/5-stars at nearby Akron-SVSM, in general, is not a bad idea.

Exactly. This kid is ranked 26th overall in the composite, so he's obviously a take regardless of the depth chart atm, but even if he goes elsewhere it's a good idea to make inroads at a program like SVSM. Keep the channels open and good things will come.

Maybe he likes high school ?

Maybe he likes high school ?

I did not see Schifino-Hood play much past early January, but I think he could use the extra time in high school. I do not see the need for him to reclassify as of this moment.

He has a lot of skill and nice size but he needs to learn how to operate better in certain places on the floor in terms of generating his own offense and I think his strength needs to catch up to the length of his body.

Right now he is sort of a flashier and more lengthy version of James Robinson; I think the goal with him is for him to really develop those areas of his game that everyone wished that James had developed in terms of his ability to effective find his own offense (meaning, get good shots and convert them at proper clips). Also, as he continues to physically develop he may find more athleticism in his game when the strength comes (which may take time).

I do not know if Drew is the end authority for the family on the matter, but when asked previously he seemed pretty resolute on Jalen staying in the 2022 class. I think it is presently the right move but maybe that thought may change come the middle of next basketball season.

Really? The kid in that video didn't remind at all of JRob.

It is a highlight package, right? A lot of people thought James looked like Deron Williams in his highlight packages way back. He did not play much like Deron Williams on the floor.

Hood-Schifino has more than James because he has length that James did not possess. He is more effective near the hoop as a result and can go over guys when he gets stuck in places. I think he also shows more comfort shooting off the bounce than James did as a prep player.

But, most of his game is dribble penetration, passing and using his size to create advantages. He has some nice flair which accentuates these skills (which James did not have, he just had effectiveness instead of flair).

Just like James, he needs to work on playing from 12-15 feet and out, developing more comfort/consistency in those areas from game to game. Big-time point guards, the truly great players, play much more on the perimeter because when the game gets smaller (ie: everything around them gets bigger, faster and longer) those are the areas where they generally can impact the game most.

Jalen is very, very good. But, to be great like I think he and his family wants, he needs some work in similar things as to what James needed to be better at (and never quite improved too much). I think the family knows that and I also think they want the advantages in other areas that another year would provide Jalen. Just my two cents. I also think that if he shows a certain line of improvement, they could be willing to bump his timeframe. But, he has to show it first.

And to the point of the thread, Branham would be a huge get for Pitt. He is not located far away, putting in a lot of effort for his services makes sense.
