A home run hire, IMO. I remember someone mentioning his name for the OC position a few years ago and showed his work at Howard and William & Mary. Sign me up for that offense.

I've been on him for a few years as WR coach who could be groomed into an OC position because of the local connection and he seems like he could be a big time recruiter for Pitt.

Absolutely and will probably stay more than a year since he's from the area too.

What's accurate that he "showed his work" at W&M?

#92 ranked in total offense
#113 ranked in passing offense
#70 ranked in scoring
#86 ranked in 1st downs
#106 red zone offense
#109 in passing efficiency
Those were about the same statistics Illinois had when Beatty was Co-OC. If Marion can recruit and coach the WR position well, then that’s all that matters.

That just goes to show how bad they were the previous year. I remember seeing somewhere that W&M had the most improved offense his first year there.

Here’s a good article on Marion and his Go Go offense.

Great read! The guy is an innovator who has taken his struggle and turned it into gold. He is poised for success no matter where he goes. Honestly, I never heard of him before. The fact that he ditched Graham for a lateral move to Pitt is priceless, especially after he played for him. And the fact that Narduzzi was able to deep dive into the coaching ranks to find and sign this guy makes me think Narduzzi may habe

I am excited to see what he can do for the program and equally curious to how receptive Whipple will be to his offense. As for talent at QB, I don’t think you need a lot other than mobility and a brain to run that kind of offense. After Pickett, I don’t see a QB that can manage a zone read/triple option/spread offense. Maybe Patti. The others are pure pocket passers.

Welcome back to Western PA Mr. Marion!

Fantastic hire. We need some new ideas in that offensive coaching staff and he will bring them

As mediocre as we are, Pitt is still way ahead of Hawaii in the world of college football.

Is it me, or does it look a little familiar to Jamey Chadwell’s offense at Coastal Carolina, with the spread and triple option wrinkles mixed together?

In some ways, but Chadwell's system is more "complete" at least in the run game. But, even that stuff has limitations. All of these guys put a wrinkle on Paul Johnson's stuff. Johnson and his tree of coaches have patented the base system and have a "tag" for damn near everything you see today in these gun offense.

When you can cut an offense in 1/2, it's more of a wrinkle than a system.

one problem is he has not stayed anywhere more than one year
He was at Howard for two years, and only went to W&M because he followed Mike London there. If London had stayed at Howard for a third year, Marion would have been there for a third year, too.

Why do you leave being an OC to a position coach at a non power 5?

I read an interesting breakdown of his offensive scheme. I played Ice Hockey so I'm a novice on the breakdown of schematics with various offensive schemes. I would defer to Steel's opinion. It looks like other teams included some of his plays into their offensive game plan. Maybe that will also happen at PITT. It definitely looks different with two running backs set on one side of QB and an unbalanced line spread on one side and tight on the other. A running QB and two high end RBs have many options.

His offense is pretty basic with lots of window dressing to slow down defenses. Pretty much the same formula Canada used here.

I wouldn't call this offense basic. He lines players up in a way I have never seen. He offsets the line and can run almost any style play from these formations. It definitely needs a running QB to be most effective.

I thought I saw somewhere that W&M didn't have the WRs for the passing part so it was mostly the running game aspect of his offense when he was on that staff
