Marion as OC

I wouldn't call this offense basic. He lines players up in a way I have never seen. He offsets the line and can run almost any style play from these formations. It definitely needs a running QB to be most effective.

The alignment is sometimes unique but the running plays are not.

So do you like the offense

Listen, I've always loved option offenses. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on his scheme but to me it's very niche. When you base your system around unusual formations and unbalanced looks, it only takes good DC's a few weeks to see what you're trying to hide and what you can and can't do.
If we're talking option offenses that are self sustaining year in and year out, we look to the academies. The academies know they can't live in unbalanced stuff because DC's are stupid. They're always going to find a way to get +1 defenders to whatever strength you show. What I mean by this is you can cut his offense in 1/2. You can't run triple option unless you have 2 receivers/blockers to one side. If you don't have that # on the backside of a formation, the defense is going to add the +1 defender to that side. This is not to say the academies don't run unbalanced. They do and do it very well. But, they base out of the flexbone which is balanced on both sides with 4 vertical threats at the LOS.

To me it's very hard to be consistent running the option utilizing multiple blocking schemes. The 3 main ways to block the option are - 1. veer (academies), 2 (zone - oregon), 3 (gap - Oklahoma). When you start meddling around with all that blocking rules, it just creates inconsistency more times than not.

When it comes to uniqueness I think all great coaches steal from everyone else. It's is incredibly rare from someone to come up with a new "scheme". There might be a wrinkle but the meat and potatoes is usually stolen. Case in point - go watch Bob DeBeese and NM State and tell me if Marion's "GO'GO" offense doens't look incredibly similar...

Now go and watch Rance Gillespe and David Dean's offense in 2016 at GA Southern.

What do you mean how he off-sets his line? Do you mean an unbalanced formation or do you mean that the one side of the line has normal splits and the other side has wide splits? If the latter is the case, that has been going on for decades by option teams.

I’ve enjoyed reading your offensive breakdowns in this thread. You certainly know your stuff.

Is Marion a done deal? I read through the thread again and looked around the web to see an announcement but didn’t see anything. By the tone of the thread I assumed it was done but nothing has been announced.

Absolutely and will probably stay more than a year since he's from the area too.
He has never stayed for more than one year at any job. If Whipple gets fired after this coming season and Marion isn't hired as OC position he'll be gone IMO.

Word is that Pitt wants the Stillers to come after Whipple as QB coach. Which means Marion's in line for the OC. IMO Pitt should've at least gave former Panther wr Mike Shanahan an interview for wr's coach. We don't have one former player on staff which IMO isn't good.

Just about every move that he has made has been for a promotion. Chris Beatty did the same thing and no one cared.

At this point all that really matters is if he can recruit?
People didn’t care that Beatty constantly jumped around jobs because he was very good on the trail. A gun for hire is fine as long as they rid the town of the bad guy.
If Marion isn’t electric on the trail, his potential short term stay probably isn’t worth it. If he is, it will have been.

I agree with this. If anything, losing assistants almost seems like a good thing because it shows positive results within the program. We got two offensive coordinators poached in what’s been the two best seasons of the Narduzzi era. Losing Beatty to the pros was because he was doing an outstanding job with his position and on the recruiting trail.

I hope Marion stays but if he leaves within the next two/three seasons, that likely means he got a promotion due to his individual success. On a side note, I hate the idea of not hiring the best candidates in fear of them leaving early. If they leave, so be it, it means they did a good job!

He’s gonna get a lot of frequent flier miles. Like 20 yrs younger than rest of off staff.

Bama lost 15 coaches from their payroll.

Exactly my point! IMO, that should be viewed in a positive light. I don’t think we’ll hear any rumblings about dysfunction in Tuscaloosa; if you’re good, people will want your assistants in an attempt to “steal” some of that success.

Would it be nice to hold on to some of those coaches? Of course, stability is good and a well-rounded staff will help your program flourish. At the same time, promoting assistants to better jobs is just as impressive. I think both sides know that’s a possibility going into a contract. Just my opinion.

You do realize he wasn't working with the same athletes his opponents are able to get. This is a school with HIGH academic standards.

STOP.....

I've had every single school in that conference visit before and if you've met the NCAA minimum standards and they deem you scholarship worthy - you're getting in no questions asked. W&M is no different.
