Mark Whipple

What I don’t get is why Narduzzi would hire him in the first place. For an ultra-stubborn head coach who still wishes the game was played in leather helmets, seems like a strange hire. Unsurprisingly, the results are less than inspiring.

Year after year people whine about the coaches schemes and play calling , hello maybe it’s time to say that the problem is that the coaches are coaching guys that just aren’t good enough to be an upper echelon
team . It’s really quite simple Pitt needs to recruit better players to be better !

While it is true that Pitt needs better players. Whipple is truly terrible. There's no excuse to be this bad on O.

The offensive line can't block and that eliminates the running game. Without any threat of a run, it's tough to pass, especially when your QB isn't very good (look at the Steelers). In the event that Pickett makes a good throw, it seems like the receivers drop it. The running backs don't have any big-play ability and aren't able to make their own yards like many of the guys we've had in the past. Not enough talent on offense this year.

We had a better year than most thought including myself. Just think how this year would have gone with a quality QB. I'm happy we won as many games as we did and going to get to go to a bowl game. Our defense is looking very promising for the next couple of years and who knows maybe we will find a QB that can help them and not hold us back.

He coaches the guys that do.

There is only so much he can do or any coach could do. Give coachK stallings’ last team and he would be lucky to do much better.

The cupboard on offense was completely bare... let’s put the blame where it belongs, on Narduzzi.

I don't know what to think anymore. Last year at VaTech & Duke Watson looks like a genius and a offensive powerhouse. This year we show flashed against Penn State and UCF. Now total regression and zero improvement.

Actually I do know what to think. A cliche. It is about the Jimmy & Joes more than the X's & O's. How's Joe Moorhead doing without Barkley? Franklin sure looks like an innovator when he has guys like Godwin, Hamler & Blacknal in his offense.

I have been a Whipple supporter on this board and still believe he needs another year, but this offense has been tough to watch. Maybe the answer is opening up the QB competition, simplifying the offense or tailoring the offense to the talent that they have which was Canada’s strength. I definitely think that they need to bring in a new young offensive line coach who can recruit. That said, I think the line held their own today.

A drop back pass heavy gameplan was not going to work against this defense in these weather conditions especially given the QB’s inconsistency overall and inability to play in poor weather. This was distrurbing. The running game was there for short gains. When they ran the ball on 1st and second down it set them up for 3rd and short. I lost count after they were 1-9 on 3rd down today. And worse yet, 4th and 1 from their own 25 and they line up in shotgun in a downpour to pass??? Pathetic gameplan.

As much as I hated Paterno, he did have a point when he said the reason he never had a pass happy offense is that in the Northeast the weather conditions in November aren't good for that. Although Tech completed a few nice ones in the same weather today.

Pet peeve I have with Whipple is having the QB come over to the sideline every play. I know Pickett says he doesn't mind but to me that is an unnecessary waste of energy.

I will add that by the time he goes over and gets the play, comes to the huddle and gets to the line, he has very little time to read the defense in front of him and audible. That is a real benefit to a lot of these RPO offenses. It forces the QB to make the reads. If he had 10 extra seconds when they came to the line, I wonder how much he changes the play. I almost never see him audible.

Watch out Slick you'll be accused of being a Penn State fan because you mentioned Paterno!Just kidding.Pitt's not alone in wanting to get rid of their OC.The Psu fans want theirs fired tonight too because Osu shut them out the first half today.Down here we just want better players because we know we're not very good on offense.

A sign of good coaching is if your line gets better in run blocking as the year goes on. A sign of good coaching is when your running game gets better as the year goes on. A sign of good coaching is when your QB gets better as the year has gone on.

You know! Like VT.

Is it Rudolph and the OC’s fault that the Steelers are struggling? Or maybe that Pitt and the Steelers suffer from the same problems?

1. No running game
2. WR’s are inconsistent
3. TE’s can’t catch
4. The OL can’t run block...

But somehow, the OC is supposed to reach in his magic bag of tricks and call plays that will astound and baffle the other team!

Shut up... You and your evil twin H2P 2003 couldn’t figure out a two piece puzzle...

AH! Now we’re getting somewhere! It’s not the play calling, but a lack of discipline and fundamentals. I agree wholeheartedly!

How can Narduzzi justify keeping him? I am serious. This offense is so bad.
I don't think he has done a very good job, but you just have to keep him. Maybe, just maybe, our offense would look a little better with the same OC two years in a row. I know that is a pretty novel concept, but we need stability.

Pitt pretended like it tried to keep him when LSU came calling , but when he became available again took a pass . Canada did have much better players to work with . Everything about Pitt Fb to me screams that mediocre is ok .

He doesn't block, run, or throw the ball.
Or catch the ball. His hands are likely better than his receivers. Hard to sustain drives that way.

He’s kind of in a jam with no run game and receivers who can catch the ball. Here’s another thing...VT defense just may be pretty good.

It’s a fact coaches increase in intelligence when they have better players. Funny how it works that way.

First, Pitt needs a new QB.
One that can actually throw downfield or have legs to create space.
There's no real threat of him throwing deep or danger of him escaping pocket.
Entire game plan in 10yds or less.

Lets say that's the case, maybe you don't blame a new OC, but you can blame a 5 yr HC who recruited these guys who have no skills (your 1-4) above. I agree with your assessment 1-4 above.

back to the future hires rarely work out. I wouldn't trust him either.

Penn state averages 427 yards per game and is 15th is scoring offense scoring 48 touchdowns

Pitt is 106th in scoring offense with 25 touchdowns

we are pathetic

Offense is inconsistent this year... bouncing between mediocre to lousy. Body of work stinks. That said, WR's drop balls at a pace I've never seen before. If we don't drop first 5 catch-able passes yesterday, the whole tone and tenor of the game changes.

Also clear that Pickett stinks in rainy weather conditions. And Ulizio stinks period

and what i meant to point out is that Whipple is very highly regarded across the industry of football. we'd be nuts to trade him out

The offense sadly is constant

we are one of the worst offenses in the acc and ncaa all year

Recruiting has been debated many times on the board. It comes down to this... You don’t know what you have until they play. Many schools recruited these same players. It’s not like PN recruited these players that nobody wanted.

Davis & Sibley were highly recruited. Most of the OL had multiple P-5 offers. Same with the receivers.

The problem I see is positional development, especially on the OL...
