Mediocre Muth.

He's a terrible player. Not good not average, below average. Terrible contact extension.
The contract extension was not good, but I’d call him average. 12th in receiving yards among TEs, T-4th in TDs, had the same number of drops as Mark Andrews.

With that being said, you can’t help but wonder where we’d be if we drafted a little differently the past five years:
  • Hurts instead of Claypool in 2020
  • Dickerson and Humphrey instead of Harris and Freiermuth in 2021
  • Anyone (McDuffie?) instead Pickett in 2022
Colbert missed way more than he hit in his final years.

I couldn't stand him coming into this season, and he's way overpaid, but I think he's had an "okay" year. I agree - he's average.

I didn't watch the first half last night, so maybe that would sway my opinion a bit, lol.

At any rate, he's been rewarded like he was one of our "hits" in the draft, but he's just not a huge difference-maker. And Benton seems to be next in line for that distinction: he'll get a healthy second contract for being kind of meh. Hell, JPJ and Broderick Jones might as well, but none of these guys are among the elite at their positions. Our drafting has been flaming hot garbage.

I thought we could get away with a soft rebuild after this year, but it's beginning to look like it might behoove us to expedite the bottoming out process. Or we can watch it slowly creep toward that organically and tack another five years onto the rebuild. You need HOF/fringe HOF pieces to win championships. Watt and Heyward (the latter won't make it in, but he's a fringe guy) are that, but they're too old. After that, nothin' in the cupboards.

Man you guys are harsh. I’m not a fan of his, but he’s ok. And he’s paid like an OK TE. I know 13 mil sounds like a lot but he was signed to an appropriate deal for the production he provides.

If he wasn’t extended, it would be another draft priority/need and we have plenty of those. Don’t need another.

but man those first down blunders every week short of the sticks are frustrating. It’s like Groundhog Day.

I think this is the correct take.

Sometimes it seems because of the 70s Steelers people think that they should have pro bowl and HOF players at a majority of positions.

13 mil is a boatload of dough no question. But he’s slotted fairly appropriately.

Funny you used the word “slotted” because I almost used it myself. He’s paid exactly his worth.

So we can show our displeasure by also bringing him up as a “Nitter”….too.

If he didn't play at Penn State no one would even talk about Freiermuth. He's a solid player and definitely got an appropriate deal as you said. Outside of clutch moments it seems, he's a reliable receiver, but is a relatively soft tight end who isn't going to run guys over. Basically, he's far away from anyone fans should be talking about after this season. He's way down on the list of worries.

Yep, no complaints about the contract. He’s a solid TE on a team that needs solid receivers and blockers (well, he fits one of those roles).

But the dude always finds a way to snatch a 4th and short out of the jaws of a 1st and 10.

He’s not really a TE
He’s a big slot receiver who can’t block .

I don’t care where he played college ball .
He is paid as a top 10 TE and he’s not very good

That Muth extension was not needed, similar to Tomlin’s.

“Well who are you going to get” also applied to Pat if someone said to wait until after the season on the extension.

Imagine not extending him and having more cap space in 2025 and not being on the hook for $32 million with Tomlin. Yesterday would have been so relieving as a lame-duck coach and Tomlin’s tenure came to an end.

Tomlin doesn’t affect salary cap
Why do you care about Rooney making more profit ?

So he’s the 9th highest paid TE this year.

8th in receptions
12th in yards
14th in 10+ yard catches
8th in 20+ yard catches
4th in TDs
11th in yards after catch
14th in yards after contact

On a team that is 27th in Tight End targets.

I would not say he is overpaid.

Edit: I thought it was strange that his stats were so good on the 27th ranked team in TE targeted, so I went back and checked and it turns out I was looking at 2023 targets. This season the Steelers were 13th in TE targets and Muth was 14th in TE targets. So his stats are slightly above what you'd expect, rather than drastically above.

I think when you combine those numbers with the fact that he is a poor blocker for a tight end that makes him a little below average starting tight end.

He is paid better than that.

He is not THE problem, but he is A problem. But relatively speaking, pretty far down the list.

Muth was low in targets because the targets went to that incredibly talented George Pickens. Oh wait Pickens was 28th among WRs in targets

The Steelers finished 29th in pass attempts. Oddly enough, 7 of the bottom 8 made the playoffs.

He's an average player at a non-impact position and he's missed alot of games due to injury. The team financially rewarded him anyway.

I think most of the sour grapes is probably that Muth has probably been treated differently than other players by fans and the media. Likely because he's a Penn State guy. I mean what's the functional difference between Muth and Terrell Edmonds? They're both role players who not only can't handle multiple aspects of the scheme but they're also not even great at the stuff they supposedly do well. So there's no real difference between them but Muth is a sacred cow and Edmonds is a bust. The Pitt fans are double incensed because fans hated and the team ran off our guys who are also in this same band - Connor and Pickett - of talent. Connor was probably the best of the bunch of any Pitt, WVU, and Penn State guy that's played for the Steelers in the last 10 years and he was never appreciated/deemed replaceable.

He's 8th in slot rate. 42% of his snaps come from the slot.

So he's not really the team's TE, he's their slot WR. So that juices his numbers relative to other TEs who play in-line.

And he's their slot WR because he stinks at blocking so you can't play him in-line and he's allowed to be the slot WR even though he's a mid-TE because the team WR talent also stinks.

He's not a difference maker. His numbers are fugazi. He's like Mike Gesicki in 2021 when the Dolphins had no pass catchers.

Man when you put it that way…lol. I like my slot receivers to get YAC and well…Muth would probably be dead last in the league if stacked against them.

Most teams in the NFL have their TE take 30%+ of their snaps out of the slot nowadays.
Travis Kelce was over 40% last year.
Baltimore almost always has one of their TEs playing in the slot.

I'd be surprised if 42% put him in the top 10 TE in the league among Tight Ends with 400+ receiving yards.
Dalton Kincaid, Zach Ertz, Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, Mark Andrews, Mike Gesicki, Noah Fant, and Jake Ferguson all have over 40% from the slot. There are probably more but I stopped looking after the top 20 receiving TEs.
