Meleek decision, 11/11

Are donors really that petty?

I think a lot of them would appreciate an attempt to get the program in a position to land a talent like Meleek.
Yes
If the school maintains a small about of comp
Tickets for MVPs, it likely isn’t noticed .
But let’s be real - that’s more a glad handing big wig current donors or Steelers/Pens celebrities .

Our fans sued Pitt over reseating based on priority points .

Who else should we comp prime seats to ?
Why should actual donors get bumped ?
The cost is pissing off those who have those seats
Making actual donors mad to chase a whale who isn’t actively looking to attend is a terrible strategy .
Yes, we should comp prime seats to whales. None of the other donors would be pissed, because they're tired of doing all the heavy lifting. In fact. they'd probably pay for the seats.

Did you see the attendance for Gardner Webb?

A terrible strategy is thinking you're going to compete without a whale(s).

Yeah - I was at the game .
You think he’s coming to that type of game ?
That cost was prohibitive?
I grabbed section 121 tix for $21 each

Then you'll know there was plenty of room, including the courtside seats, because the donors you're worried about didn't care enough to be there. So I hardly think they'll be concerned with a potential whale getting comp'd a few seats while being hosted by the AD.

It has nothing to do with seat costs vs his tax return. You do whatever it takes to get him there, rather than hope he buys seats and shows up on his own.

Hey
Let’s also rotate those seats to fans who play powerball , in the hopes they will be so grateful they donate a big chunk !

So , I have to ask -
Are there specific examples of these multi-millionaires being converted as whale donors with no previous affiliation to the college or team ?!?

I'm pretty sure the guy that Moneyball is based off of was hired by the Cleveland Browns 7 or 8 years ago (not Beane, but the Ivy League guy). His strategy has not seemed to have worked for the Browns. Not sure it can apply anywhere other than major league baseball, as least based on what we see with the Browns.
Paul DePodesta. He has basically done nothing in football. The only thing he has to show for his work is one playoff win in eight years and whispers that he was correct about a couple of decisions behind closed doors.

Think baseball is a much different sport and league when it comes to analytics. It is a lot more simple. Something like an on base percentage is black and white. Basically, an individualized sport. Analytics are great for everything, but they are not as reliable as in other sports.

I mean he does have an affiliation to the area as a Sewickely resident and Steelers minority owner. And an affiliation to the sport through his son. There are mega donors out there who dont necessarily have an affiliation with a school but just like the team.

Why does Vegas comp whales …..because they ultimately benefit.

Pitts only chance to compete is to find 2-3 such people .

Why waste time whining about a school and a coach who has the assets to go get the players they want or a kid getting a life changing payday !

You're right, their concern should be yours and other donors panties getting in a bunch over a whale's comp'd seats.

If you're being serious, and not arguing just for the sake of arguing, I don't know what to tell you. Green's time is much better spent kissing Tull's behind than trying to squeeze more out of me or you.

Every dollar helps and I guess you have to take that approach. But like you guys have said, I don't think the monthly signs up of $50 a month are going to get it done. You need the huge whales. About the only chance. The only reason all the time and energy was spent on those small monthly signs ups is because they don't have the whales.

Who knows what happens. Maybe it won't be much longer in this reality and they figure out some type of system. What they have in place now is pure insanity.

I don’t see a way back to reality . If they try to Iimit the payouts someone will take them to court .

My best guess is that they eventually form national conferences with divisions based on NIL payouts .

Can you give me a small list of these unaffiliated mega donors?

I have asked you for some examples to this hypothetical.
It’s a straight forward ask .
I mean - Tepper went here undergrad so that’s more
Likely . Cuban took classes at pitt while in HS- that’s mlrr
Likely
A guy from upstate NY who went to a prestigious private school and got rich in Hollywood - less so .

Spoiler alert - he won’t be funding our NIL.
If anything he’ll donate to research and academic programs, like he has with the Children’s hospital foundation .

It's your contention that it isn't possible. Why don't you do the research and educate me?

Tepper and Cuban don't live here with a son that's into basketball, however I'm not opposed to courting them either. I'm suggesting they go after low hanging fruit who has also donated $3.5m to USA basketball.

He certainly won't be funding any NIL if they take your stance.

Buddy
I’m making the null hypothesis
It’s your theory - hence your point to prove the affirmative.

Give me 1 example.

You think Vegas comps whales because they think they will donate to them ?
Or because they know the odds mean they will take their money eventually the more they play ?
What an idiotic analogy .

I never claimed a theory, nor precedence. I have no idea if there are whales who didn't attend the schools they support, and frankly don't care. If it matters to you, then do your own searching.

I simply said take a shot and court, which you apparently have a problem with for whatever reason.

If Pitt courts him - it won’t be for NIL, silly goose .
Holy shit

You’re the idiot that can’t understand that courting the few guys that can actually make a difference is far more important to the future of this program than a pharmacist making a buck twenty . Those guys make more money in one hour than you do in years and doing anything that would get them interested in supporting the program needs to done if you ever want to compete .

The analogy is you that you give to get back more .

No wonder I had you on ignore .
