** Like most Pitt fans, I came to the Pete today rather dour.

** I feared the high point of the afternoon might turn out to be the nifty little golden Pitt towel we received upon entry which was quite useful for wiping the wintry mix from our collective brows.

** Instead we got to experience a solid basketball team effort in the face of adversity, enough to wipe away my previously dour disposition this day.

** We can’t proclaim this was the kind of performance that inspires a legit belief we can steer this season back into the tournament. But it was enough to offer up a pile of positive thoughts. So if your own personal disposition remains dour, this edition is not the place for you.

** The core of our Panthers have left us with their share of questions over the last six weeks. Today, that same core offered up mostly responses.

** Our first responder today was Ishael Legget.

** It wasn’t so much that Ish brought first rate production. It was rather his top notch leadership that should be noted. Where that leadership was most evident was on the defensive end where he was getting into the grills of Miami guards throughout.

** His battle on the boards was equally noteworthy along with his decision making. Perhaps most importantly, he produced points in the early going when most of the other Panthers encountered a lid on the tin.

** This wasn’t a case where Ish willed us to victory as he did against Wake Forest in last year’s ACC tournament. Instead, this was a game where his consistent approach laid a winning Panther blueprint.

** I suppose Zach doesn’t really need a blueprint as his motor is always switched to high even in defeat.

** Zach’s value was most evident from his work on Miami’s Clevaland whose only minor burst of a pair of buckets came when Zach was out to the game. Otherwise, Matthew was a complete non factor, and this is a guy who has scored at will against the ACC in his last 7 contests.

** Equally impressive was Zach’s effort on the boards. He just didn’t collect 10 rebounds, He fought for that many.

** This season, Cam Corhen has taken his share of lumps from a vocal portion of the Hoops fan base. While I understand the basis for some of it, I also don’t think all it has been entirely deserved. Today he deserved none.

** A comment often directed at Cam is that he plays too “soft,” and on this day, he was nowhere close to this designation.

** He defended strong in the post and came up with stops and steals, often without getting any double team help. Additionally, he hedged ball screens energy and attitude, daring the Canes to make a play on top of him as he flew back to the paint.

** Offensively, Cam was appropriately aggressive and only some limitations he has with his hands kept him from challenging a career high on points.

** With a new spotlight shining upon him, freshman Beebah responded with a mature effort where he let the game come nicely to him. He was smooth and under control, and took shots he should instead of trying to make plays that he shouldn’t.

** And then there’s Amsal.

** I’m going to forgo all of the editorializing about whether Amsal should have been playing more all along, and instead just rejoice in the fact that he did.

** I suspect Mr. Delalic’s performance among the faithful may take on some Luka-like legend in the coming days. Still, he was in fact quite splendid, and like Beebah, he made plays that he can make instead of trying to make ones he can’t.

** More importantly, I suspect Amsal’s European upbringing lends him more to a team offense where passing the basketball is valued as much or more than driving to grab a piece of the paint. More than anything else, this a welcome addition to our attack.

** Beyond that, Amsal more than held his own defensively while his offensive rebound put back should be on the list for one of the smartest plays a Panther has made this year.

** Now that Dunn is done, there’s no reason not to offer more minutes to Amsal going forward.

** And thankfully, there are more meaningful minutes to be played. After today's win, the road to the NCAA tournament is still very long and extremely narrow, but it’s still open.

** For this fan this day, that’s enough for me.

** Congratulations to our Panthers on a much, much needed win. Let’s get the Orange on Tuesday and keep this going!

Listened to some pregame in the car and Hillgrove said something that maybe he wasn't supposed to. He said just over 7000 tickets were distributed but they only expect 4 or 5000. Then Aiken said something like it's important that those 4000 or 5000 are loud.

Announced crowd: 8,578 which roughly equates to a 100% lower bowl and 20% full upper deck

It was about 4,500 but quite frankly, I thought it would be worse.

This Panther fan is definitely in Amsal's corner. The talent has always been evident. It's unfortunate he did not emerge as the player many of us hoped for this year. JC keeps pointing to the Dunn injury as a turning point in the season. Perhaps it can be argued that Amsal's hand injury before the season was because he lost valuable practice time which undoubtedly set him (and us) back. He needed that time to get acclimated, blend in and carve out his role. I really do hope he comes back next year so we get a chance to see what he can be.

As for the game, today we played like a team. If we had played like this for the past 6 weeks, we'd be in a lot better place.

I still don't like our second half rotations. It was a different cast of characters, but we still shortened the bench way too much, way too early. Until we put Guillermo in on offense-defense switches in the last minute we had three guys who played the whole half, two who played 16 or 17 of the 19, and two who had played 2 or 3.

I just don't understand why we continually do things like that. Spread the playing time out more. Give guys at least a few minutes a half off. No one needs to be playing more than 34 or 35 minutes at most (except with the injuries now, maybe, maybe, Leggett).

Good win especially without Lowe .

You can see the natural ability Amsal has and maybe it’s just taken him awhile to adjust to the speed and athleticism of the game in the US . If he continues to play like this they will be a much different team . He needs to be given more PT .

If Cummings would find his outside shot that would be big .

It's going to be difficult, but there are a lot of winnable games down the stretch. Just win. Chaos can and does happen every year. That's just the nature of the sport. Happens every year. While the tournament chances may look bleak today, if Pitt takes care of business, things can have a way of opening up.

Let's face it, if they simply change the offense from "lowe dribbles as long as he wants to and then drives 1 v 3," the team will be better.

That kind ability is a great compliment when the defense doesn't know exactly what is coming because you've distributed the ball all game.

When it is the cornerstone of your offense, you will be figured out

Capel has butchered the bench this year. We should probably have been playing 10 on a regular basis. Now that two were out, we are down to a short bench again. I'm sure Lowe will be back next game. Hopefully he learned something watching today. Let the game come to him, he need not do it all. That is why you have teammates.

It was nice to get a win, but, it is important to remember that Miami is 6-19 and had the weakest interior players we have seen since the preseason. I don't think we will have an easier game remaining. I will take more of Amsal and Cummings and less of Lowe and Leggett. At least, I hope Capel doesn't play these 2 ballhogs together. I actually like him cutting down the twins minutes. They should come off the bench and bring energy for a few minutes and that is it. I'll take the win, but, I really hope Capel continues to give as much time as possible to Cummings and Delalic. Lowe + Leggett together is highly detrimental to team basketball.

Amsal was fun to watch today. Under control, smooth with the ball, distributed the ball well, great vision, hit key shots, and defended well. Very pleasant surprise and I hope he gets more minutes in upcoming games. You can see the natural talent he has.

A win is a win and I'm glad we got one after the dismal stretch we've had to endure so far in February. But I'm trying to keep this in perspective and not overreact too much to the win. This was, after all, Miami and they aren't good at all. We'd have to win the remainder of our regular season games and hope some other teams lose for us to have any hope of getting an invite to the NCAAT. It's possible, but not likely unfortunately.

I’m in the IC Light Baseline Club and it appeared to be well over that number from my vantage point. I thought it was very well attended considering the circumstances.

Well over that number? Come on. Half full would be a little over 6,000, and it wasn't particularly close to half full.

I do agree, however, that considering the weather this morning I was afraid it would be much worse than it was.

It’s easy to say that , especially when there’s been some disappointing results .

Other than the game Cummings went nuts he hasn’t excelled when given a chance .

I liked the Bb IQ of Amsal , but he’s looked slow and overmatched until today . When given the chance he’s missed on several wide open threes .

Who have you seen excel that should be playing more ?

Have you been in practice and someone’s destroying everyone else ?

The staff watches these guys everyday and if there was an answer sitting on that bench they’d be playing !

It was well over half full. I didn't see the entire upper level, but the lower level was pretty full. It filled in quite well after the game started. I'd think 7,000 - 7.500 was the actual attendance. I wasn't really expecting it to be more than 4,000 with how this team has spiraled downward lately and with the weather.

We are currently 1-8 against Quad 1 and 3-1 against Quad 2. We are going to need to win the rest of the regular season games and then at least one in the ACC tournament to be legitimately considered for the Big Dance. I predict we end up winning 18 games overall.

Agree. We dont defend, rebound, or shoot well enough to defeat quad 1 teams. That is why we really don't belong dancing.

Good W today by the entire team!

Ball movement was impressive today…several times 4-5 different players touched the ball, making it tougher of their D and led to wide open shots!

Hail to PITT!

It was just nice to see the team play with energy and play solid team basketball on both ends for a change. They moved the ball well and had good off ball movement most of the game. It finally looked like a well coached team for a change

At this point not sure they can win enough games to get in but hopefully they can build off of this game and continue to play well and provide some optimism for next yeat

Getting Cohern, Amsel, Beba, et al
Into the weight room all
Offseason adding some portal guys could provide a far more optimistic outlook for next year than there was a game ago

Man, I'd like to have some of what you were smoking.

The lower level might have been half full. The upper level wasn't even close to that.

I can't say anything because I didn't go but at least my tickets werent used but attendance is so bad anymore for Pitt basketball. Even the last 2 NCAAT-level teams, nobody really came out except for a few later season Saturday games. They have to figure out a way to draw more fans without being a Top 10ish team.

I have been saying all year long that we should have used the bench more. Even back when I was saying (correctly, as it turned out) that there was no reason to think that Papa Amadou Kante was going to be a star this season that he still should have been playing more than he was.

The difference between us is that I think the bench guys are typically bench guys for a reason, and you think the only thing standing between Pitt and an undefeated record is more Amsal Delalic.

Agree. We are good not great.

Even at full strength no ACC game was a given.

We hurt ourselves because of how we were coached or just inherently play.

We have shoooters and drivers. We "should" be very hard to defend. Because of style of play, we are anything bit that.

No, not at all. I said nothing of the sort.

That is you and two other posters version of what I posted.

It was an exaggeration to make a point, but you posted the tweet from the moron who after the one game said that it was not a coincidence that Pitt had won a game when Delalic had played, because they had also won the previous game that he had played, like as if he had anything at all to do with Pitt actually winning either game.

So when you post some of these links to these idiots, is it not because you agree with them and they are trying to make the same point as you?

Most of the posts you make are exaggerations to make points?

No, some of them are sarcastic responses to people who scour the internet looking for someone, anyone, no matter how obscure, who agrees with them to try to make people think that the point they are trying to make is valid.

I have a hard time seeing us left out if we win the last 6 including a win at Louisville.

We’d have a much, much better resume than last year with a weaker bubble.

They will have a shot to still make it but the blowout loss this past week at SMU and the losses at Wake by 2 and at UNC by 1 who are all in the First four out last four in category at the moment aren’t going to do Pitt any favors. Winning anyone of those 3 games would have put Pitt in a much better position right now and they didn’t win any of them which hurts their chances a lot should they play themselves back into the conversation.
