$MU: HOLY CRAP

Enlighten me with your inside info. I'm open to hearing what you know. Or, as I said, are you just here to lob insults because you saw something you didn't agree with?
I have a very good and close friend that is an SMU grad and still lives in Dallas. They have more billionaires than you can shake a stick at and every bit as much as A&M and Texas. I’ve met some of these “good ole” boys and money is not an option. When SMU was in there heyday THEY set the standard for money and gifts before it was even vogue to do so. Ask Oklahoma and Texas how hard it was to recruit against them back then.

Not true. Texas A&M and Texas have more rich donors than anyone except Oregon

Thanks for the link. You have to wonder if SMU now being in the ACC brings out a lot more chunk athletic donations.

It would be interesting to revisit those numbers in a few years. 🤷‍♀️
Maybe. A lot of the recent money I suspect is a one time gift. If they win on the field, donors will give on a more consistent basis, but not the big numbers they're getting now. We'll see...

Save this post and let's see what happens now that SMU is in a P4 conference.

"Forbes recently looked at the top 660 colleges in America and ranked 28 schools based on the number of billionaires on their “Forbes 400” Two schools from the Lone Star State – SMU and the University of Texas at Austin – made the list with three billionaires each."

Funny, no Texas A&M on the Forbes list. Hmmm. Here is a thought. Maybe, just maybe Texas and Texas A&M have three times the Alumni as SMU. So like I said save this post and we will see what happens. I am not saying the kind of numbers of the other two schools but as far as football goes they will spend equally as much.

A&M may not have any billionaires, but due to being such a big school that have a ton of millionaires willing to piss there money away on a linebacker.

What kind of credibility does this article have if Texas A&M is not on the list????? That is insane. The number of Billionaires doesn't mean squat if they don't give. I'd venture to say the Duke has more billionaires than SMU. How are they doing in football?

They didnt forfeit nearly as much as were still making more with a partial B10 share than a full ACC share. SMU is taking $0. It’s not close.
SMU is going to be making more with their partial ACC share than they were in the American.

Take it up with Forbes Magazine. That’s where it came from. I would think Forbes is a little more reputable than 247 just a thought

The 12th Man Foundation at A&M pulls in $850 million per year. Texas is doing around $766 million per year. Again, that's per year without anything special happening. This David Miller (billionaire) guy got $200 million in donation commitments from SMU's "richest donors" that triggered this big news story.

You can pay players now. And a football payroll isnt going to be more than like $50 million at the blue bloods. My guess is that SMU's player payroll will be as much as Texas and A&M

They aren’t going to be elite.

But you don’t see a lot of ACC programs able to flex like this. “Bama just stole our QB? No problem, we’ll go take the 4* from our rival.”

Shocked that all of those huge donors couldn't arrange something to hold on to Keelon Russell.

There is a limit for what you can pay a HS player. You cant be stupid no matter how rich you are. If SMU was paying a million and Bama offered a million, he's gone. Sure SMU can go up to $2 million or whatever but is it worth it. They have money but its not unlimited.

There aren’t a ton of ACC teams landing 94+ ranked Offensive Tackles. That’s not a dude who just barely made a 4* grade and so might as well be a 3*.

You’re spending $$$$$ to do that.

Probably going to be #3 behind FSU and Clemson really really soon. NIL was made for SMU.

Neither Clemson or FSU are 1 when it comes to current ACC recruiting.

I just don’t see SMU passing any of the top 3. You’re talking about at least a .90+ average recruit ranking on 247 to be at their level.
That’s a big ask.

I mean in terms of overall program strength. If FSU and Clemson stay, I'd expect SMU to be the #3 program soon over UNC, NC St, VT, Miami.

What does overall program strength mean?

I don’t know how you measure it, but just give me a Top 5 recruiting class every year and you can have whatever other factors you’re using.

Hi Panther fans, this is the webmaster from PonyFans.com. Somebody posted up a link to this thread, So, I thought it drop by and say howdy from Dallas. You are correct about Mr. Russel – we lost him to Bama. However, SMU replaced the #1 dual threat QB in the nation with the #3 dual threat QB – and we stole him from TCU.

Dallas' Highland Park (essentially where the school is located) is probably top 5 or 10 most affluent neighborhoods in the U.S. Nearby Preston Hollow is top 5. SMU raising a $159M war chest for 2024 to replace what they gave up in TV revenue is well known. But did you know that last week at the "Welcome to the ACC" party they raised another $125M? The 5,000th Mustang Club donor was Bryson Dechambeau's $50k. Same day as the party, SMU announced commits from four 4-star recruits, so once Rivals updates, if all the other schools stay relatively where they are, SMU's 2025 class should be right behind Clemson and Miami [edited: my bad, was multitasking] in the ACC.

Some SMU athletic luminaries include:
  • Clark Hunt, chair of the board, Kansas City Chiefs, NFL
  • Lamar Hunt, founder of the American Football League
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame members Raymond Berry, Eric Dickerson, Forrest Gregg, Lamar Hunt and Doak Walker
  • Jerry LeVias, National College Football Hall of Fame and NFL Rookie of the Year
  • James Irsay, owner and CEO, Indianapolis Colts, NFL
  • Payne Stewart, championship golfer

It means that in an extended period, lets say 10 years, from 2024-34, I'd expect SMU to be the #3 program in the ACC in terms of wins/losses.....if FSU and Clem stay.

I was trying to convey where SMU is situated is surrounded by nothing but established wealth. Not just money...wealth! Looking forward to heading there this fall for the game.

I wasnt aware what the SMU neighborhood was like. That further solidifies my Villanova comparison.

Miami has had some highly rated recruiting classes, but has never won the ACC. They have one 10 win season over the last 20 seasons. We can tap the brakes on SMU until they prove it on the field.

Nova doesn't care about football, and not many locals go there. A large % come from North NJ, NY & New England.

When I moved to Texas, I didn’t initially live in Dallas. So I didn’t have much concept of it. And Maryland didn’t require lawyers to take a separate ethical exam, it was just part of the essay questions on the actual bar exam. But Texas required it. And the exam was at SMU. So SMU was my intro to Dallas.

I was like, “Is Dallas really just the tv show Dallas?”
