The NCAA report indicates that the special assistant to the head basketball coach brought the football issue to the athletic department's attention. Matt Woodley (now an assistant coach at Drake) was the only "special assistant to the head coach" that existed under Stallings, as far as I know.
So the basketball staff basically said "if we're going down, football is going down with us." Lovely viper pit we had there with Stallings.
It would make sense about Woodley. He moved his family to take the Pitt job so his daughter could get treatment at Cleveland Clinic. He probably felt betrayed by Stallings and Pitt.

The NCAA is a joke you have a couple guys who were not coaches go on the practice field and toss some footballs and hold some plays in there hands but the part of the athletic department that whole thing is so stupid

I didn't need the motive. It was obviously spite from the start. That he felt like his revenge against non-affiliated parties was justified makes no difference.
this is the most intelligent thing you have posted. I'm sure this is how it went down, Lyke was able to use this against Stallings to get out of the contract. Stallings & co ratted football out as revenge.
I never thought I would see an AD/coach approaching Jaynes/Hackett/Bozik levels but the whole Barnes/Stallings fiasco was pretty darned close.
