i don't really see the need. Post offices are closing all over as they continue running in the red. Where does the set up money come from? The expenditure on technology? The expansion of staff and security? I see no ROI anywhere.

Thats not important.........the important thing is providing more free stuff.........

Clue us in on what you're taking about.

Bernie and AOC want to provide banking services at post offices.......not to mention capping Credit card interest rates at 15%. IMO if you cant afford to put it on your credit card and pay it off and ovide interest you cant afford to buy it period.

Not too far-fetched if you consider that the postal service has been offering money orders since at least the pony express days, but you have to wonder where the market demand for it is. (Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who has purchased a postal money order since the turn of the century . . . )

Walmart has been offering banking services for years. They probably do it better than the Post Office and some banks could or do.

Bernie and AOC want to provide banking services at post offices..Did they happen to mention why? I'll override my tendency to assume that their love of an all controlling government was the reason and wait for the answer.

Because banks are closing offices left and right and many Americans are finding it difficult to find affordable or convenient banking services.

While I'm gradually being forced to adapt to the 21st century, that's not so easy for those without access to a computer.
or cell phone (which I am guessing 98% of those using these fly by night payday cashing services have)...

True. I guess life got tough for people using horses when cars took over. Going backwards isn't a great idea IMO. I'd rather have people use the computers at the library than make a huge investment in a struggling organization for the small % of people who can't get to a bank, have no computer and no phone.

Send al your letters and packages via fedex or ups?

Careful what you wish for.

Because banks are closing offices left and right and many Americans are finding it difficult to find affordable or convenient banking services....uh, brick and mortar locations are closing...more banking options than ever before in our history...

May surprise you that same folks who mail letters and don’t have convenient banking options -

May not be exactly keen on having their banking online.
What % of the population do you think have no access to banking options, brick and mortar or online? Before making a final decision I'd rather see that data. Typically, the US has only used a national bank in cases of extreme need. Doing it without extreme need, what could go wrong with that?

May surprise you that same folks who mail letters and don’t have convenient banking options -..may surprise you that the best thing for said folks is to work hard to save up a couple bucks to open up a bank account...

My friends all make fun of me because I actually deposit my checks at the bank. Most use an app. I like the free lollipop.

The post office “loses money” because it’s enormously cheap and accessible for citizens .

Send a letter across the country for 55 cents

Ups north of $9.
probably because the "P" stands for parcel...I'm guessing if they were ULS they would get the letter there for 55 cents as it would be in line with their business model...

only in governance is "losing money" a noble thing...

My postal lady can't even get our neighborhood mail in the correct mailboxes. I get mail in my box everyday that's not mine but a neighbor, and many neighbors are even getting packages that aren't theirs. Why would I trust any form of banking in the post office?

The banking services offered by Walmart and the proposed services for the Post Office are tailored to individuals who are unable to afford the fees charged by traditional banks and also to serve those who still crave brick and mortar and convenience. If this does not apply to you, don’t worry about it.

If this does not apply to you, don’t worry about it....a federal government entity (especially its re-purpose) applies to everybody...So I have every right to "worry" about it...Walmart can do whatever the hell they wish.

From the Cheap Seats; I have no problem with capping CC rates. In fact, I would probably tie them to 3 or 4 points above prime. Then, the only issue would be if we went back to Carterish rates, which I hope we never see again. As far as the PO getting into the banking and IRA business. That is a non starter with me.

The USPS is subsidizing Amazon, Chewy, etc. with high delivery costs to the general public.
My neighbor gets 40 lbs of dog stuff for no shipping cost.

I send a golf headcover which weighs a few ozs to someone, it costs me $ 3.94, the person was in Ohio, and this was the cheapest rate.
The USPS guy mentioned they just raised postage on letters and packages for the general public who is overcharged to support the Amazons, and Chewy's of the world get free shipping!

It's like US pharma prices are high, Euro pharma prices are lower, the US subsidized the rest of the world by paying higher prices.

Plus the USPS is a monopoly, government run, and is one of the most inefficient organizations on the planet.
Why be efficient when you have 0.0 competition delivering mail to the entire US.

My mail is mis-delivered about 8 times a month.
Same for our neighbors and sometime we don't get stuff ever.
Where did it go????

Same reason you’re trusting the usps with your letter and packages rather than sending them via a private company.

You’re selecting the cheapest option

You are off your nut.....

The Uber Statist...why don’t we just put Gubimint in charge and control and running everything if it’s so freakin cheap and accessible...and efficient

The USPS , which has its place no doubt, ran up billions in debt because of nut sitting over-bloated supervisory bureaucrats , ridiculous pension plans, absurd numbers of redundant facilities...
and wth is Saturday delivery of general mail good for save for its delivery personnel.

It's the cheapest option because no one has been allowed into the "letter" carrying business.

UPS and Fed X cannot deliver to, touch or access your USPS personal mailbox.

Noone can open and go in your mailbox. It's a Fed crime.

If you get your neighbors letters technically you cant open their mailbox to put the letters in.

How do you explain 40 lbs of Chewy dog food going free shipping and I pay $3.94 for a golf headcover which weighs 5 ozs. It went USPS cheapest rate to Columbus Ohio.

The reason is the USPS charges residental customers high rates to subsidize the large volume big shippers like Chewy and Amazon.

A USPS regional manager mentioned that to me.

A letter should cost half of what it costs today!

You can certainly send letters fedex and ups.

Again-
Use private carriers if you’re opposed to it.

USPS is the cheapest option for residential companies as well.

How amazon contracts with usps is their business.

Don’t use usps and then complain.
Choose an alternative and vote with your wallet.

Our neighborhood had and still has a lot of trouble getting our mail.

Often we get our neighbors mail they get ours, other neighbors on other streets get eachothers mail, on and on.
So we arranged a meeting with the Regional USPS manager. He's called a Postmaster.

He recommended we get Informed Delivery which we got from the USPS website. You get a scan of the mail that you're supposed to get daily at around 7:30am. This way you can see what shows up and what doesn't.

At the end of the meeting we asked if the delivery person could be terminated so we can get someone else.

Guess what his answer was? We can't fire anyone unless they steal or do something violent?????
He did say the USPS is a government operation and those are the rules.
He gave us a different postal person but things are still hit or miss.

The USPS is a monopoly, it has no competition, no incentive to become more efficient, and employees can't be fired for poor performance!

No private sector business can run efficiently with rules like that!

It's a government "cluster fu-k."

We continue to get our mail some of the time and some things never show up.
I had a large check from a financial institution that never showed up.

A guy in our neighborhood distributes a local advertising paper through the USPS
and they get it out some of the time.

He's now doing it himself!

There you have it. If you don’t like the USPS, deliver your mail in person.

It's not good when your customers think you su-k so bad they have to come up with an alternative to your services, and you can't improve your service because you don't have employees with the competencies to improve!

Plus the USPS can't discipline or fire incompetents! Great business model!

It's a government monopoly.
Inefficient, overpaid, lazy people who have no standards dominant the work force!
Classic you get paid regardless of how bad your performance is and you get the scheduled government raises.

Letter sorters and carriers.....LOL

Just imagine the doctors and surgeons run by nut sitting Gubimint bureaucrats.....we’ll never attract the best and brightest into medicine again if the Socialists somehow manage to put the BiG LIE in place...
