With a post-season ban. Brown is suspended too. I have a hard time caring when UNC hasn't been punished for their bogus classes.

its about time smu pays the price. They've been getting away with murder for years..

And this is why I"m caring less and less about college sports.
It's all a scam.

Pretty much. Calipari has had his issues as well. Obviously so did Calhoun. Pitino lost a guy for part of last year for extra benefits and it pretty much went totally unpublicized. KU had their issues with the Pump brothers, allegedly.

The lack of outrage is what amazes me, given what the reaction was to the Patriots stuff. I mean, reality or not, these are technically amateur athletics and rather than looking to crush the cheaters it's more of a mentality where you just need to cheat harder. Basically, however one views college sports, you'd think there would either be a massive swell of outrage because a professional sport is tainted or a massive swell of outrage because adults are cheating and profiting at the expense of teenagers/young adults.

In reality, though, even if there was some huge amount of outrage, the shoe companies have probably created a runaway train at this point. There's just too much at stake and they're too entrenched in even the High School/Middle School game to ever think that their influence can be totally removed.

At the very least, why any school would hire Larry Brown is beyond me and why the discussion over Auburn and Bruce Pearl here cracked me up. There are schools who are willing to ignore everything just to be successful.

You know it has to be bad when even Dukie V, who loves most college basketball coaches more than any member of his family, is saying that Brown should never be allowed to coach college basketball again.

It seems the big difference between Pearl and Brown is that both lied to the NCAA about what had happened, but Pearl also tried to convince his players to lie to the NCAA as well. And then lied to the NCAA about that too.

It's all about the $$$$$ . It's not just college , thugs if they can play are fought over in the NFL. Our Steelers signed Micheal Vick why because they want to win and winning turns into $$$$, Dallas signed Harvey why because he can play. And so on......
Ps. How many D1 players in the major sports are truly students and would attend college if they were not athletes? The P5 conferences operate an athletic business inside universities enjoy it for what is just don't confuse it with amateur athletics.

A school would hire Brown because he's probably one of the top 10 coaches of all time. I don't blame SMU for hiring him. Penn State should have hired him when Brown showed interestfont too long ago. Pearl just landed another star recruit last week. He's going to make Auburn relevant until the school gets dinged by the NCAA. I don't blame Auburn since it's a business.

Winning is better than losing.

UNC should just drop the university part from their name. They are in no way a real school, just a bunch of athletes that don't want to actually go to school. Totally agree with you, until they really crack down on Carolina, nothing else is a big deal to me.

It's not a scam if you accept it for what it really is. Big business and a defacto well funded minor leagues for the pros.
It is a scam in the sense that the schools could not operate their athletic departments the way that they do without the "donations" that they pressure their supporters to make. Remove the tax-exempt status from the NCAA and all of the power conference athletic departments and stop the pretense of "student-athletes." Until then, it is a scam.

Yep.. Along with pretending we can't pay the kids, with the millions of revenue flooding in.

Absolutely. I have said the exact same thing on these boards. Want to clean up college sports, threaten to take away the tax emption from these revenues.

Oh I agree Souf it is a sham But I haven't thought anything different for at least 15 years.

Pay the players with actual money instead of with plush facilities, high priced coaches, and 5 star meals. Pay the kids and this all goes away.

Pay them what though? Is it a level playing field? And if not, the rich get richer. If it is ( set pay for all schools), they'll cheat anyways. This too is ripe for "cheating".

they are paying them. You want them to get paid more?? Be careful what you wish for Pitt fans, we aren't exactly swimming in money. You think we lose recruits to psu now..

How can you clean up a cess pool ? If you separated the schools into divisions one with no academic requirements and paid athletes and those with true student athletes (SA) hardly anyone would watch the SA . All those SA universities would lose millions of dollars. Never going to happen these universities are addicted to the $$$$. Anyone out there watching Brown vs Yale ?

No, they really aren't.

I'm under no illusion that Pitt would benefit from it...but, let's at least throw away all the NCAA over-sight, and let's be upfront about it all. Let's stop regulating if a kid can have a bagel on a trip..while we have multi-million dollar coaches who are doing the real fleecing.

As long as I get entertained and made to feel proud of my alma mater, I don't give a damn about what is considered fair in our PC world for the players. When it goes the full monte and salary is paid in lieu of an education as the reimbursement I will lose all interest. I have already stopped watching or caring about MLB, the NFL the NBA and the NHL.

No, not at any price it isn't. Cheating to win just speaks to your ability to lie to yourself. It is a sham.
