Never Been to Morgantown, But.....

Hahaha, my 8th grade son wore his script shirt today. He wears Pitt gear now to school just to create controversy. Lol. Rabble rouser.

True story: So the Monday after Pitt beat PSU two years ago, he wears his gear (a 6th grader). A teacher asked why is he wearing it. He said because Pitt beat PSU and I hate Penn State. Teacher asked why. He said "Cause of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. They are disgusting (I'm 80% sure that was his adjective used)" Teacher just walked away. HAHA. Turns out he is a PSU alum. :D
Gee a Psu grad teaching school in Mon County only making 35k a year,I feel sorry for him.He probably delivers pizza on the side to make ends meet.He should of stayed north of the border to educate today's youth.Noone will say a word to your kid wearing Pitt stuff to school today because everyone will be thinking he lost a bet and had to wear it!

Are people who drink craft beer snobs? To each his own. I’ll drink a Miller lite or whatever, especially in the summer, because I can’t stand IPA’s and that often seems to be all you can get in the summer months. I hate walking into a bar and them having 18 IPA’s on draft, one porter, one stout, Yingling, and Coors light.

But there’s nothing wrong with a little variety when drinking beer, especially with the Fall and Winter seasonals. But if I’m sitting at a bar next to a guy drinking Budweiser, I won’t be looking down my nose at him. He’s allowed to enjoy whatever he wants. I never understood the term “beer snob”. If anything, I’m pissed at the IPA guys. Do they have to monopolize 90% of the taps in 90% of pubs?

I was just referring to the seemingly inevitable response deriding anyone that mentions craft beer on this site. I agree, I enjoy the discussion on beer since I like to drink it, but I don't care what people drink in the sense that I judge them.

I get what you say about the overabundance of IPAs on tap lists. Mad Mex is probably the most egregious one. I like some variety when the weather changes and just stocked up on some stouts this week.

But IPAs are popular and I think that it comes down to market demand. It is just that almost every brewery is doing them so distributors are pushing a lot of different ones. The other thing is that hop forward beers are more sensitive to quality loss due to light, heat and time. So keeping them pressurized and in kegs helps preserve the quality. Less hopped beers are somewhat less susceptible. So if you have to chose which beers to keep on tap vs bottles / cans, it makes more sense to sell the hoppy ones on draft and the Bud in the bottles.

That’s great to know about the hoppy beers. I did not know that. Thanks for the info. Just seems like overkill having 15 different ones on draft. I realize I’m in the minority when it comes to IPA’s. I wish I enjoyed them. Because if I did, I’d love Mad Mex even more than I already do. They have the best happy hour. I just hate having to skim through their board or menu looking for that one malty ale that they hopefully have on draft. And then when they have nothing that suits me, often I have to settle for a Dos Equis Amber or a less hoppy pale ale.

I’ve tried countless times to jump on the craft beer wagon. Can’t tell you how many ipas I’ve tried that have a bitter, citrusy grapefruit aftertaste.

To each his own i guess.

Try a Bells Two Hearted IPA. Readily available and nothing harsh about it at all.

And for bars that have that many taps, usually they have quite a few bottles as well. Plenty of good pilsners and lagers around. And other things that aren’t hip forward (Belgians are fairly popular).

And most of those places have lists as well. Again if you enjoy Miller Lite have at it but you’re not normally restricted if the place has 80% IPAs on draft. Unless you insist on drafts.

Maybe try an English style IPA. They generally use a Kent Goldings hop that isn't as astringent. Much more of a malt balance than the typical West Coast or New England style IPA

He was the WR who got shot in the head and had to retire from the NFL...same time as Austin was there...and I think Noel Devine......
Stedman Bailey he spent as much time suspended as he spent on the field in the Nfl! He was a great college receiver.

Not to sound like the "Most Interesting Man on Earth", but, when I could drink beer, I usually drank a porter or stout. I was not an IPA guy.

Oh I certainly get why people don’t like IPAs. I wasn’t keen on them at first either. But I love them now. Not all of them are hop bombs. I don’t think Two Hearted is hoppy at all.

I like porters and stouts too. Lots of variety within those as well. Only thing I stay away from completely are Belgians. Only had a couple but sours don’t do much for me either.

My wife and daughter like sours. Obviously, I can't drink them any more, but they always insist I take a "taste". Just not my style.

RON! Long time no hear. Yeah, what about the new Fishbowl on University? I been there last year on a drive by, but nothing beats the original for sure.

New FB has the same delicious wings and frosty beers but doesn’t have the history or ambience of the original. I’ve been going to the original one since I was 5. Lol! I’d go with my dad and uncle and drink a Yoo Hoo while they had a beer. Good times!

So........the Friday before that game.......at work I was getting a lot of jabs. I mean who really thought Pitt would win. So good natured jabs. Well one Monday per month, we have what is known as an "Operations Meeting" where everyone goes first thing in the morning. Well for that month it happened to be the Monday after 13-9. I purposely walked in a bit late....walked right up to the front....took out a marker, wrote on the white board...'WE SHOCKED THE WORLD", put my finger up with the #1 sign and took my seat. Everyone was laughing I have to admit. They knew I was going to pull something because I am sure it is a surprise to many of you, I wasn't exactly a shrinking violet at work.

Where did you work in Mo-town? I was on the WVU Med School faculty back then. One student who was going to be on the rotation I ran requested time off so she could attend the BCS championship game (this was the week leading up to the 13-9 game). She made a point that her mother-in-law was a big WVU fan. I agreed that if WVU was in the game, she could arrange her schedule to go. But if Pitt beat WVU, then she and her mother-in-law would have to have a picture taken in front of the Mountaineer statue wearing Pitt jerseys. I did not know at the time, but the mother-in-law was on the WVU Board of Governors! I never did get that picture sent to me....but the satisfaction of that arrangement was enough.

I know this is too late for the OP, but thought I would chime in as I was in Mo-town this past weekend.
My past experience with Mountain State Brewing is that the food was good but their beers tasted more like a beginner homebrewer than craft beer. Now Morgantown Brewing down by the Westover bridge has very good beer.

We went to Pies and Pints in the new shopping area there. The pizza was good, not great. The selection of WV craft beer was really good. The brewery out of Parkersburg makes very good beer, as does the Chestnut Brew Works. Had a nice meal at the Iron Horse Tavern on High Street. The food there was really good, but the tap selection not great.

I tried the Bells Two-hearted while back as that is mentioned on this board frequently. I was not a fan of the actual beer, but I did like the trout on the label.
