I attended their game last fall at Akron. I wouldn’t go as far to say Pitt controlled the game...but I do think pitt had the better of the play. And that’s against a blue blood that ended the season in the National Championship game. So we are getting close. In terms of being competitive, I'm more excited about the men's soccer team right now than I've ever been. I like the direction that the team is headed.
I don't think we have the numbers or quality to play as much defense as we have in the past. Do you think we open things up?I attended their game last fall at Akron. They split them up I know, at least in the past. My nephew was a walk on and played his freshmen year and quit, he had a non-athletic scholarship, I suppose he wasn't that good, he was a Pittsburgh Class A player, this was about 4 years ago, he told me that team had only one full scholarship player and the rest where broken down to fractions or nothing. On paper that's a ridiculous amount of talent as most have come from European or MLS academies.
BTW, how do these soccer coaches get around the scholarship limits. I think they are only allowed 11. Do players who didnt go to HS in the US not count or something?
I have no idea. I don’t know the program. I can’t imagine they would though. We don't think we have the numbers or quality to play as much defense as we haVe in the past. Do you think we open things up?
Only have 8 defenseman - 2 are freshman and 1 is someone who departed and has now returnedI have no idea. I don’t know the program. I can’t imagine they would though.
Didn't they usually play 5 on defense last season? If they were to play 5 this season, the depth would be someone who left and 2 freshmen (who don't appear to be sure things). The more stellar recruits seem elsewhere. They do bring back Vaughn, Sessock, and Arbona on defense, who all started in almost every conference game. They lose Dambrot and Weidt who started 7 and 6 conference games, respectively, and Moxham and Prescott started 5 combined conference games. They return a pretty decent amount of production on the back end - including Penaranda, who started every conference game in goal.
Filling Perez’ role in the midfield will be far tougher than finding another guy or two to fill holes on the back end. Vaughn, Arbona and Sessock should be really good building blocks there for the next few years.
