NEW COMMITT

Why does that excite you? He's a 3* recruit outside the Top 200.

Another scholarship walk-on. I noticed that we only have 1 true walk-on left on the roster so these last few recruits will serve as walk-ons. I have no idea why they'd want to do that instead of playing at a low major.

Because it's a lot easier to start here and stay at this level than it is to work your way up from some random SoCon or Big West school. It depends on how much they value playing time.

I have no issues with bringing this type of player in. The thought process is you'll have some hits (Champagnie) and some encouraging TBDs (Cummings) that you'll have the inside track on keeping. It's just better inventory management than having to go build an entire team from the portal every year. And the misses can just be processed out.

That said, this particular season is obviously one where they need an immediate influx of talent. And the fact that they keep adding guys who are not that leads me to believe we're pretty close to seeing the roster we'll be rolling with this season. Probably going to be a rough one.

He was 1st team all-state in Michigan division 1, which sounds like more than a walk-on at Pitt.

What I mean is that he is never going to play here. A kid rated this low wouldn't be able to contribute in the P5 until his 3rd or 4th year and he will transfer down before that. So he is essentially a walk-on. And with roster limits, walk-ons will be limited so we seem to be bringing in scholarship walk-ons.

He isn't THAT low, for crying out loud, haha. I totally get that take with the 7-footer, but this dude is rated higher than Xavier Johnson, etc.

Given where this roster is at, I fully expect this dude to come off the bench as early as this season... the only question is whether that will be out of desperation or merit.

Only MAC offers. This is more of a Stallings level recruit. Think Kham Davis. There's a chance this kid may play a little but that wouldn't be a good thing because there's no way a kid rated this low can make meaningful contributions in Year 1. College Basketball is just too old nowadays. It's not 2019.

You want 21-year-olds who were, at one top, like the 450th rated recruit in the country. I'd rather have top 250 guys (the higher the better, obviously - thinking more like guys who are at a Cummings level) who develop here, contributing off the bench until they're ready for more meaningful minutes. Then, when they're 21 you have a physically mature, and better, player than who you could obtain in the portal.

Obviously this is just a general outline, and I'm not suggesting we never use the portal. And I also get that it's going to take a few years for this approach to work, because we're returning so little.

Are we not seeing the "go get older players" method fail before our very eyes? We are literally proving in real time that we can't build a good team strictly via the portal.

The Top 250 guys aren't going to stay. They are going to sit for 2 years then transfer. See Marlon Barnes. Players dont sit and wait their turn. Everyone thinks they are a star so these 250ish players come in thinking they are going to start or play a lot and when they dont, they leave. Yes, I'd rather have the guy ranked 450 out of HS but averaged 17 PPG at Towson as a junior. He has proven himself. He is better at 21 or 22 than a 250 player is at 18.

He would be on the "process out" list. Cummings stayed. Too bad we don't have 5+ more of him at varying levels of seniority. Instead, we'll go get some Malaysian who Capel's buddy found shooting watermelons into a wicker basket on an elephant safari and who Chris Dokish said might play in the NBA.

I would take lower-rated locals because they would seem to be more likely to stay and develop.

I think the roster limit is supposed to be 15, right? In that case, I dont mind bringing in these low-rated HS players as scholarship walk-ons but you can't expect that they will contribute for awhile, if ever.

In a given year, let's say we return 4 scholarship players, then I wouldn't mind seeing next year's roster look like this:

4 returning Players
2 Top 100 HS players
5 transfers expected to play a lot
4 low-rated HS players who will essentially be scholarship walk-ons
1 true walk-on

So far this team, has 1 true walk-on (Mayhew) and 3 scholarship walk-ons (Moore, Lau, Ndiaye).

Decommitted from Iowa State and had a Louisville offer.

From the Trib:

"He shot nearly 65% from the field, including 47% from 3-point range."

That should get him some playing time.

Ok, had a Louisville offer, and decommited from Iowa St. Given what we have so far on this
roster it's nowhere near as bad as some on here are posting. Even the last few years I could
see him as a decent recruit. Did he have offers from elite teams? No, and for the most part
neither did the rest of this roster. This is where we are right now as a program, and he is what
we're getting. No surprise to me.

But for where Capel finds himself and what he’s actually accomplished, I’d be pretty happy with this recruit. There just seems to be a complete disconnect between Capel’s view of his job security and that of the fan base. It’s as if the AD is so focused on the NIL related issues that he’s said to himself that until that’s all straightened out, he can’t be bothered with the major men’s’ teams w-l records.

The AD can't write the check for his buyout until at least after this season. It's not more complicated than that, despite people insisting otherwise.

Capel actually landed 3 in 2023 per 247 (Kante, Lowe, Bub). Low probability of happening again but he did do it.

Pretty sure Hugley/Jeffres and McGowens/Toney were top 100 (or something close to that) tandems, as well. It honestly shouldn't be all that difficult to do. The big dollars aren't going to 100ish-ranked high school recruits; they're going to proven transfers and elite-level recruits.

... Which is why we should tap into that market more than what we've been doing.

He was #74 on 247, #90 on Rivals. His Composite was #107.

He was a 4-star with a fantastic offer sheet. Not exactly sure how, but he was.

For the record, I was just joking, I have no idea where he was ranked. So thanks for the numbers.

I just can't imagine how anyone had him rated that highly. Unless his injury was that devastating to his game.

For better or worse, this statement rings true and I agree with the AD. We will not be able to attract quality FB and MBB coaches until the money stuff is straightened out. Might as well keep PN and JC until then.
