Next week's game at OKST is the most inconsequential Pitt game in a long time

1. We just beat our rival

2. If we lose, who cares, its on the road against a good program who pay their athletes good money. And we're not making the CFP anyway.

3. The possible de-facto Coastal Division Championship is the next week in Chapel Hill.

Sure, I'd love to beat OKST but I'd rather just get out of the game injury free and be at full strength for UNC.

The game in Stillwater is the first Pitt game I can remember where I can watch it almost worry-free. Basically a "house money" game.

I couldn't disagree more.

1. Beating Penn State and then going 6-6 renders the win meaningless.
2. The Pitt Football program cares. You play to win every game. Every game matters.
3. You can't call game #4 as a de facto anything. It's far too early in the season to make such a proclamation.

If the Pitt football program is making the progress that everyone desires, you have to go down to Stillwater and beat the Cowboys. The next step for Pitt football is winning games like this, especially on the road, and getting to 9-10 wins on the season. Beating Ok State would be another step in that progression.

If Pitt losses this week, it won't be the most disappointing thing in the world, but your post is illogical. As Herman Edwards, you play to win the game. Even if they lose you want to always see improvement. You always want to play the team in front of you
If Pitt losses because they were satisfied with this win and looking forward to NC I will be pissed. I can accept them losing in a hard fought game, but not by a let down.

The OP is a true idiot.....

Ok st just lost to a mac school. They will be fired up. That said, they just lost to a mac school. Says they can be had. Why not coach for the win and be 3-0

For my sake I hope they play to win the game because it will be the farthest I ever traveled for a game. However I understand a little of what you mean in that I don't think I will be able to rev it up quite as much myself as I did yesterday. I still really want to win.

H2P

gee kid, those of us with some age and with eternal hope for the team wee root for think that when you are undefeated no game is "inconsequential" as it is the next step to the ultimate prize. Do you actually get up in the morning and make a list of the most inane thoughts and then pick a winner to post?

Terrible post by this alone.

Winning is the best recruiting tool a coach has and beating teams like PSU and Ok St helps way more than a well played L or a W against teams like Nova. They need to go into Stillwater and impose their will and show their going to be team to be reckoned with .

Wow. Oklahoma State is the best team on our OOC schedule, loss to CMU yesterday on a play that shouldnt have been allowed to happen or not. While that loss will cost them their top 25 ranking going into a Pitt game, they are still the most talented team on our OOC schedule this year and is a game with ESPN national coverage again.

Both teams have something to gain in the game. Pitt needs to prove they wont allow a let down after a win against an in-state rival and OSU needs to prove they can bounce back from a bad loss to a non-P5 team. A win for Pitt probably puts them in the top 25 the following week.

The game is also a big one for our defense, especially the secondary to prove themselves against some good talent and an effective offensive scheme. We know Pitt's secondary is this defense's weakness and we are going to be in sub-packages most of the game with more DBs on the field.

Should be a good barometer for where Pitt is right now.

For the record, I didn't mean to say the game IS inconsequential........just the "most" inconsequential in a long time because I cant remember the last time we had an OOC game against a good program on the road sandwiched between a victory over PSU and our biggest conference game of the year.

So maybe inconsequential is the wrong choice of words but most of you know what I mean. Losing next week will not cause a message board meltdown. Not that we will lose or expect to lose but its the game between PSU and UNC.

Its kinda like losing the Brawl that year when everyone knew the BE Championship was next week against Cincinnati. Usually a loss to WVU really hurts. Really stings. Takes awhile to get over. As a fan, I remember after that loss thinking, "OK, the championship game is next week" and I am talking about this mostly from a fan's standpoint.

The bottom line is that when they're making the bowl pairings, every game is significant; every game has relevance.

Pitt has to win more games every year -- or end-up being invited to the "XYZ Douche Bowl" on Podunk, Arkansas, or having the "honor" of playing in what was nothing but another Navy home game disguised as a "bowl".

You are absolutely correct...

It wasn't a terrible post. It is the game that if you had to pick which one to lose, you'd pick that one. On flip side, if we win, we could be looking at a very special year. 8-4 very likely and 9 or more wins not that crazy to think is possible.

Think about us winning and of course not laying an egg against Marshall. That gives us 4 OOC wins which means all we need is 5-3 in acc to get to 9 wins. Clemson and unc are only legit good teams we play in acc.

In short, if we beat ok state, we almost have to STB to not win at least 9 games.

This team and this program isn't in the position to consider ANY game "inconsequential". Pitt needs wins, period.

Pitt needs to win for recruiting, to sell tickets, to become part of the national conversation, and because that's why you play the game. Win.

Yesterday was a great step in the journey. But only one step.

This team, this program, this fan base needs to stay humble and stay hungry.

Winning 9 and 10 games a season sells tickets. Getting ranked gets fair weather fans out of their homes and into Heinz. Beating programs like ok state, on the road, gets the cooks and other Pgh media to write positive articles about Pitt. Winning Games like this gets Pitt on the tv shows nationally.

We all talk about making that jump to the next level, this is it. Going 7-5 and being in the middle half of the acc coastal was done, let's try to be that program that can win 8 or 9 games and be respected nationally.

He's partially correct.
If Pitt is to lose a game....and let's be honest none of us think Pitt is going 12-0.....this would be the game to lose. It's not a conference game, it's not at home, it's not to a mid major, and it's not to psu.

That said, a win could make the difference between a great season and a good season, or if you want to be a real downer a bowl game and sitting at home for the holidays.

This is also the type of game Pitt usually loses so it would also be nice to reverse that trend also.

Thank goodness Pitt's coaching staff has higher standards. They should enter next week like it's a big game because it is a big game. For this program to take the next step, these are the types of games it has to win.

Sean,
I'm usually in agreement with you on most issues, and I know where you're coming from. A loss to OklSt won't be the end of the world, but 3-0 going into the UNC game or being 2-1 is a big difference. Okl St will re-focus and looking to bounce back (wish they wouldn't of been upset yesterday) and then UNC will be a tough test. Beat Okl St and good chance Pitt gets in the top 25 and that's always a plus.

Ever games means a lot!
12-0 would be great!
Wouldn't it!
Doubt Bama or Clemson fans have the same thought process ( or lack of it) as the OP.
Win um ALL!
Imagine PITT goes 11-1 and Narduzzi says we went out to OK but were playing with house money so we played cards, watched a dust storm, an F5 tornado, didn't practice much.

Disagree in many ways, All I can say, is I know coach Narduzzi is NOT thinking that way, since that is how Franklin thought about the Pitt Game????

One builds a Program by winning 10+ games every year and that includes all Games not just the ACC Coastal!

Narduzzi said on the Radio when told how OKSU lost, that will just make it tougher on Pitt now! I am glad he Coaches Pitt and not me or you!

it is an Away Game of a Pre-Season Top 25 Ranked team with a very Good Coach Gundy that WVU has tough time beating? Why would Pitt call that inconsequential at all, that is only on you.

Pitt Players don't think that way and the coaches know they have a tougher job to do than against Penn State.

Sean, Pitt has over 500 losses in its program history. Embarrassing!

Time to end this mentality where it's OK to lose.

Pitt needs to win this game for national credibility purposes alone.

I hope they don't take your advice because I don't want to travel all the way there for nothing!

This game is inconsequential if your goal is 7-5.

Big12 has a lot of street credibility and Okie St has been pretty good recently. A Pitt win would put some nice shine on the Pitt resume nationally. I want this game!

I just want to see an improvement from the back seven...wasn't too encouraged yesterday. It's still early in the season, though.

Remember how Iowa came out of nowhere last year to make the Rose Bowl? Why not us? Why couldn't we be a 12 game winner? I'm logical and understand it's a long shot, but I, like many others, want and hope for a Pitt win each time they take the field.

You must be one of those fans who are happy with mediocrity, and you must have been happy with Jamie Dixon's last five years here, as long as he won 19 or 20 games you were happy, instead of thinking bigger like championships or something like that

Couldn't agree more... Every win matters in college football, momentum, bowl selection, and trickle down to recruiting. 10 wins recruits different then winning record does.
