Thought this was interesting that it has us as a #5 seed in the NIT as of today. Hoping we can finish out strong and qualify for the NIT. Couple interesting potential matchups -- TCU is currently a #3, ASU is #4 (former Dukie players facing off as HC); Minnesota as #1 seed right now (see Marcus Carr), Duquesne is #8 seed in the NIT as of right now.

Man, was Steel more wrong about a program than his constant chest thumping about ASU?

That NIT bracketology doesn't take into account the 12-16 auto bids so basically you need to wipe out all those 6, 7, and 8 seeds and replace them with like Robert Morris if they win the regular season but not the conference tournament. Because of this, I have always said the NIT needs to expand to 48 or 64.

I know it's not the NCAA tournament, but the NIT is fun all the same. Home sites in the early going, and the chance to play at Madison Square Garden. Add to it the experimental rule changes (quarters, three point line, etc.) and the nature of the fact that it's the NIT leading to more unpredictable teams, and it's a fun tournament to watch.

There won't be 12 of them. There's usually more like 4-6 each year. If that.

No. Only like half of the regular season champions win those conference tournaments.
I should add that in the first year of the rule, only five teams were automatic qualifiers. That’s what I was remembering to form my initial opinion. For the most part, it’s been about 10-12.

I went back and checked and you are correct. The range has been between 10-15 automatic qualifyers.

Which is why its so hard to make the NIT now. Only about the best 18-20 teams who dont make the NCAAT make it. Of those 20 teams, probably 10-12 of them were either on the bubble or pretty close to it in the last week or 2 of the regular season. So, really there's only about 8-10 spots for teams like Pitt and Duquesne (ie teams which were never "on the bubble")

One thing in regards to the NIT. For a decade or so, we so looked down our noses at the tourney. Now where we are, we can appreciate how important step it is for programs, part of the process. I hope we never lose that perspective again.

Umm ... wasn’t this what I professed from 2013-2016? You used to argue with me about it then. ;)

Five years back I would have taken an NIT championship over an NCAA first round loss. Now not so sure.

Let's be honest: Our fans looked down their noses at even making the NCAA field.

I think there's a huge difference in going to the NIT as an ascending program like in 2001 versus going to the NIT after a decade+ run as a top 10 program like we did in 2015. Pitt won one NCAAT game in the final 5 years of the JD run, against a team missing it's best player, who is now a stud in the NBA. And frankly, none of those teams really had the talent to win more than a game or two, max.

If Jeff Capel only wins one NCAAT game in his first five years here, people will similarly be calling for his removal, right or wrong.

Most importantly, I think Jeff Capel can take us beyond that 3 out of every 5 year NCAAT appearance type of program that we had become, where you're struggling every year just to get in. I think he can assemble the type of talent that gets us back to being a Sweet 16 caliber contender in most years, which everyone at Pitt SHOULD be very happy with - and SHOULD have been happy with over our glorious 10 year stretch from 2001-2011. Beyond that level, we're probably still going to need the ball to bounce in the right direction in the NCAAT to ever achieve much more. Unfortunately, that didn't happen in 2002, 2003, 2009 or 2011, but maybe next time we're in that position, it will.

Not everyone. And I’m not suggesting anyone is saying that. But I appreciated every single one. Sometimes it felt like a kick in the gut when they lost. Too many early exits. But being in it was great. So much so that even though I still watch the tourney, it’s just not that same as others have recently said.

Pitt has never been a program that should EVER look down on the NIT. There’s never been a level of success that should warrant that collective mindset.

Plenty did.

Let's beat Miami first. We have a long way to go until we even think we can qualify for the NIT. But I guess it's fun to dream.

These posts always seem silly to me. We are fans. We aren’t playing games. Half the fun for us is thinking about “what if’s.”

Yeah sure. I mean, people thought the earth was flat too. After further information, it wasn't. It is the idiots who refuse to admit their mistake and refuse to change their opinions. And there are many of them on this board.

That was particularly sad. And much of this is because a large portion of Pitt and Western PA sports fans do not pay attention to college basketball until the NCAA tourney starts. They didn't appreciate that back then....say beating Syracuse/Louisville and UConn on 3 consecutive nights was actually a bigger accomplishment than getting into the Sweet 16.

One other thing, our fans, we look down at Penn State or WVU when they are winning 10-11 football games and then not winning a conference championship just because we won a national title in 1976. It is one thing I just don't get, "Franklin stinks".....yeah, if any Pitt coach had the run of success as he has had at Penn State, we would want to name a stadium after him. But he "stinks".

I’m just messin’ with you for fun and having a little “I told you so” fun for myself! I mean no harm. But the one thing I can say for myself is that enjoyed all of those seasons for what they had to offer.

Sadly, sadly true.

DT, I took no offense. No problem.

Personally I Would love a NIT home game this year !

Even Levance Fields lamented the fact that we didn’t go far enough in march in his interview when he was a guest on the Jeff Capel show.

He wasn’t satisfied.
No doubt about how we were clearly substandard in the Tournament.

Bullshit. From 01-02 to 10-11, Pitt absolutely was a program that had every right to look down on the NIT.

The difference is when Pitt was “down” in those years, they lost to Pacific or Bradley instead of playing in the NIT. The perspective wasn’t how remarkable our consistency was, it was that any first weekend loss was unacceptable.

Which Pitt fans were happy we lost to Nova? Nobody. It’s possible to be happy you made an Elite 8 AND disappointed you didn’t make a Final Four.

One elite 8 in 13 years left a lot to be desired.
